  1. Yeah, that can take a while. Although there is a slightly simpler method- if you don't recruit Jirachi (but you have both the Wish Stone in your inventory and access to the Friend Area "Mount Moonview" you can wish for "something good!" and you will either get your rank raised by one level, or a random Pokémon will ask to join your team. The cool thing about which Pokémon it is, is that it can be any non-Legendary in the game, including the extremely rare Chansey and Blissey. It still takes a lot of time and a bit of luck and skill to be able to get to Jirachi, of course, but that was the method I used for obtaining a handful of the really frustrating species.

  3. I don't think I've ever cried at a Pokémon game, but it was definitely an emotional moment, and not something I think anyone would expect from a children's game. Yeah, that bothers me, too, but since it's related to the story then I guess I can't be too harsh on it. If you can get a copy of Sky then I would recommend giving it a try, it fixes a lot of the problems I have with Time/Darkness with a ton of small but useful features, like an item recycling facility where you trade in items you don't want for better ones, and the fact that you get seven bonus dungeons in-game without needing to look online for passwords. (I'm talking about the "Seven Treasures" dungeons, which contain some Legendary Pokémon and a unique treasure item each.) I also agree on the names, especially considering how members of your rescue teams can have them, but no other characters do. They could at least use nicknames or titles for the characters, like how everyone calls Wigglytuff "Guildmaster" and the Kangaskhan who stores your items is sometimes called "Auntie".
  4. That part of the main story is definitely the highlight for me, along with the ending. And I never had much difficulty with Wish Cave, since I stuck to always using Kecleon, two Frustration TMs and a few Link Boxes, but Purity Forest and Joyous Tower were the bane of my existence. I think Joyous Tower is actually the harder of the two, considering how insanely hard it is to even encounter Chansey, let alone recruit it, and the number of enemies that are at such an absurdly high level that you basically need some kind of set damage to defeat them. And Sky, to me, is about as perfect a Mystery Dungeon as we can every hope to get. Everything's better than the first two games, the story and characters and music and gameplay. It did pretty much everything right. My only gripes are that the cutscenes can become a bit dull once you've seen them twenty times over like I have, and I didn't enjoy the Special Episodes very much. I only really liked the final one, but even that was a bit of a stretch because of how long it was, though the ending was incredibly satisfying and probably my favorite moment in all of the MD games. As for GTI and SMD, I'm honestly pretty glad I don't remember them much. I did come out of SMD thinking "Well, it's better than GTI, but it doesn't hold a candle to Time/Darkness/Sky or even the first games", but GTI felt like such a waste of time. Why the developers only chose to include >200 total available Pokémon, I have no idea, but even if all of the Pokémon (at that time) were included I still don't think I would have liked it. SMD felt like an improved version of GTI and nothing else, and some of the things about it seemed flat-out copied from the better games, like whatever it was that happened when the main characters discovered what happened to the Pokémon who were turning to stone felt cribbed from the future of the DS games, where time was frozen. Idk, like I said I barely even remember anything about the 3DS games.
  5. I played mostly Blue, it was the one of the two games I preferred because of the better sound quality. There's not much difference between the two other than that, though.
  6. I agree, the story of the first games isn't too impressive. The main two characters are good, but they're the only standouts in my mind, you're not missing much from the rest of the cast. And MD's combat is definitely more simplified than the main games, but I think it's one of the games' stronger points. Moves and types are essentially the same and some of the more challenging battles do have a bit of strategy involved, like the big boss fights in T/D/S. Where I think the games do lack is the variety in strength of the dungeon battles- all enemy Pokémon in a given area have roughly the same stats and level of challenge, though there are a few exceptions here and there. I would certainly love to see the MD series have a bit more of a traditional feel, with common enemy Pokémon having lower stats and the more evolved forms/rarer species being more powerful.
  7. Zapdos. Was the first Legendary Pokémon I ever caught, it's pretty decent in battle (at least the way I use mine on Showdown) and I'm a fan of the more simplistic design and Shiny version.
  8. By the title, I mean the first two "generations", so to speak, of the GBA and DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games. Given that these games are twelve and nine years old, respectively, I feel like the only person left who still goes back to them non-infrequently. Of course, I don't go back to these games too often, because they're the games I spent the most time with in my teenage years by a long shot, but I still think the first two Mystery Dungeon series are great games that deserve all the praise they get. I was playing MD Blue on and off for a total of about 5-6 years to recruit all 386 Pokémon species, and currently, I'm trying to do the same in MD Sky whenever I feel like taking a break from Fire Emblem. I'd say I'm well on my way, but there's still a lot left to do, like train up a Pokémon capable of learning Fast Friend to completely max stats so it's possible for me to recruit Kecleon. For some reason I started as a Skitty in my current file... even though Normalize is literally the worst ability ever. I'd probably start over again if I hadn't already maxed out my Explorer Rank, cleared Zero Isle (and Destiny Tower, after like 50 attempts) and recruited about two-thirds total of the game's roster of 493. And for anyone who might be wondering, I don't have much to say about Gates to Infinity or Super Mystery Dungeon. GTI was pretty awful and I didn't find SMD to be much better, but if you've enjoyed those games, that's perfectly fine, they just weren't for me. I picked them up once and put them down after finishing the main stories.
  9. There's so many story moments that I could call my favorite. In each of the games I've played, I'd say there's at least one highly emotional or memorable moment. For now, I'll just stick with what's my current favorite- the first cutscene involving Berkut in Act 5 of SoV. When I started playing SoV, I wasn't expecting much from Berkut, and was ready to discount him as the typical antagonist following me through much of the game before a finally showdown, in the veins of Valter and Narcien. Boy, was I impressed with Berkut by the end of SoV. Now, I guess from a gameplay perspective... my favorite moment I can remember would probably be completing Awakening for the first time. It felt so much bigger and more epic than the GBA finales I'd already seen, and the music in the endgame is my second-favorite FE track of all time. When I was younger, I would listen to it on repeat when I was doing anything from writing a fanfic to trying to fall asleep. Also, below is the "final choice" I made after the FE13 endgame: I could easily write a lot more about pretty much every FE game I've played, but I'll keep my reply to less than novel-length.
  10. I meant Fighter, yeah. It's 7 AM and I've been awake for about three and a half hours.
  11. I'm doing a run of Conquest rn and I was not aware of how the female Barbarian class is literally just a top and a bottom with nothing in between. To say nothing of the cutscene that physically made my jaw drop when Camilla told me she knew I missed my big sister.
  12. It was her voice more than anything else that drew me in, initially. Especially her battle cries... She's not quite my favorite voice in Echoes, though. That honor goes hands-down to Berkut , for the men, and, strangely enough, the DLC-exclusive Yuzu for the women. Her voice is pure seduction, too bad she doesn't have more lines.
  13. Thought it was something like that, thank you. Personally, I don't think the Rigain class looks very good, it's a bit unfair imo that Alm looks like a cooler Walhart in his final class and Celica looks like a Viking with no pants.
  14. Husband? Alm. Checks off a lot of the "what I like in men" boxes. A softer, gentler personality than a lot of male FE characters (from the games I've played, at least), someone I would have no problem approaching and talking to, and not overly possessive, protective or restrictive over me. I think, at least. I'm not usually too enthusiastic about having male FE characters as my... romantic fantasies. Wife? Celica. If you asked me six months ago, I wouldn't have hesitated to say Soleil, but after playing SoV, I'd prefer Celica over any other woman. Soleil's quite a bit like my own personality when I'm at my best, being very outgoing and optimistic, but she sure doesn't seem to have a very good sense of boundaries. Celica doesn't have that issue, and she's generally a lot more mellow and thoughtful- though I have a feeling that her selflessness might come across as more than what I feel I deserve sometimes. She's also just really, really beautiful, especially in her second class (I can't remember what it's called atm). … I guess I think about these things more than I realize, I wasn't expecting to write that much.
  15. Mentally, I feel like maybe an eighteen-year-old, because at that age I made the decision to not have or look for a job for over two years, while still living with my family and not even contributing in terms of chores. Thankfully I've done a 180 since then, I live with my boyfriend/partner now, work anywhere from 20-40+ hours a week, manage our home as best I can, and still have plenty of time for my two other loves in life- playing Fire Emblem and creative writing. I'm glad I turned myself around, but especially lately, I look back on those two wasted years not infrequently and wonder where I might be in life now if I had worked harder back then. I'll never be eighteen, nineteen or twenty every again, and that's a sad and sobering fact.
  16. No, I get what you're saying, and I totally agree. From the brief month I've spent on these forums, it seems like there's quite a bit of polarizing opinions of the FE games, stories and characters. Frankly, I think that people being unable to view things in shades of grey, rather than black-or-white-"this is good"-"this is bad' is an immature mindset, since one of the whole points of becoming an adult is learning that the world doesn't run on absolutes, and things are often more complicated than we think at first glance. In my opinion, there's no such thing as a truly bad FE game. My least favorite of the series, Revelations, may have an incredibly underwhelming plot, annoying maps and an antagonist who is arguably the weakest in the series, but it still has great music, balanced gameplay and the benefit of playing Fates without the version differences. Maybe I'm just easily satisfied, or I find it easier than most people to overlook flaws in things I enjoy, but I don't see why that should be called a bad thing. I suppose I'm getting a bit off topic, but, yeah. That's my thoughts. Don't feel bad for enjoying something that someone else doesn't, or vice versa.
  17. Well, that's the first time I've heard of someone liking Awakening the most. Whenever I see people mention FE13, all they seem to talk about is how broken and unbalanced it is- which is quite true, but even without DLC, Awakening has so much content and replayability that it can keep anyone busy for hundreds of hours. I don't think FE13 gets enough credit for that. Then again, playing Awakening was a huge part of my life from 2013-15, so I may be a bit blinded by nostalgia.
  18. If my avatar and banner didn't give it away, Alm's my favorite lord as well. I know he's not exactly a complex character, and I can agree that his relationship with Celica isn't exactly fleshed-out, but to me, he's the most likeable and relatable out of the other lords. I guess I'm just fond of the "nicer" types of people, the kind who I could probably sit down and have a conversation with, since I'm easily scared away by bolder personalities. I can see some of myself reflected in Alm's insecurity, too, I know I second-guess myself a lot and don't have much confidence without friends supporting me. Though granted, it has been a while since I've played the GBA games seriously, so that opinion might change- I'm also quite fond of the Blazing Sword trio.
  19. Amen. I liked Henry in my early days of Awakening, but over time his gimmick of being someone who relishes in bloody violence started to get tedious and off-putting.
  20. Good to hear! She was one of my best units in my last file, I classed her as a Mage/Priestess and that worked out well.
  21. Same here. I don't like Clive much as a battle unit or a character, Mathilda's so much better (except for her really low starting HP). The only reason I've used them both is the A support, but even that doesn't do much. Gray's the same as my opinion on Faye: I like him, but I get why a lot of people wouldn't. His obsession with Clair isn't cute like Faye's infatuation with Alm, but I still find him entertaining, despite being pretty one-note.
  22. I like Ricken for the same reason I do Faye- they're both just kind of adorable to me. Though I do find it odd that Ricken looks and acts and talks like a pre-teen, and yet can marry other units who must be at least in their mid-to-late teens. Hayato fixes this a bit because he seems more mature to me than Ricken does, though still seeming like an improved version of an existing character.
  23. I like Faye, personally- and I'm starting to feel like the only one who does, though I totally get why people wouldn't like her. You bring up a great point in that she never makes it clear why she likes Alm so much, though. I mean, he's a nice guy, but there's no real reason for Faye to latch on to him to the point where she ignores or dismisses other people when they try to approach her.
  24. There (surprisingly, considering what a critical person I can be at times) aren't a lot of FE characters I just flat-out dislike. I find a lot of them have at least one redeeming feature, be it an interesting support, a useful battle feature or even just a very appealing design. I really have to think to come up with some characters I truly dislike, but here's a couple. Validar/Iago - Hands down, my least favorite villains in FE. So completely boring and lacking in any kind of backstory, unique twists or even memorable attacks or weapons. Makes me long for the likes of Nergal, Lyon and Gangrel whenever either of these two are on screen. Conquest Takumi - I'll make this clear, I definitely don't hate Birthright or Revelations Takumi. He was the second unit I married, and I love his kid to the end of the Earth. But Conquest Takumi is so utterly hateable with his empty taunts and broken bow that I just want to smash his face with a silver club every time he shows up. Hayato - A much more boring clone of Ricken with none of the mage's charm. When I first played through Birthright I was astonished at how similar he was to Ricken, and waited the whole game and then some for an of explanation. Isodora - So forgettable and dull that I think the only reason she hasn't shown up on this thread yet is because everyone forgot she existed. At least in my mind she's pretty much the only unit, playable or not, in FE7 who deserves to be forgotten. Clarine - A non-charming, annoying Serra. I've only played through FE6 once, though, so I don't remember much about her to begin with.
