  1. "Character X is such a missed opportunity" - STFU, you story inflating would-be cancer, your favorite arrangement of pixels or polygons not getting your desired amount of content because they aren´t the main character doesn´t make them a missed opportunity, but puts them in their place as a side piece. Stay in your lane, sidekick.

  2. Honestly, I feel like an idiot but Chloe hasn´t worked for me.
Gave her me MS and she was just what you´d expect from a flying horse unit. Fast as fuck, frail as hell (except Res if memory serves, duh) and weak as shit. And then I gave her a crit engraved forge and she still didn´t kill shit. And I know I gave her stat boosts, just have to look up what drops when, but I think I remember 2 STR boosts. Wouldn´t recommend, but that´s what I get for believing in Big Palla Propaganda.

I´d guess if you grind out the early armor (Louis?) guy he´d make somewhat of a decent bastion early on.

Noone you get before The Sand Kingdom TM and a bunch of it´s goons too are worth keeping that can´t be easily replaced, barring the usual big names.

Sell them seals, I say. Disrespect common FE wisdom.

Specific limited resources. I'm thinking of things like stat boosters or weapons here. "Oh, Jimbob is a great unit. You just need to give him two Energy Drops, a Speedwing, and a Brave Lance and he's as good as anyone else!" That sort of thing. And while it's true that this would be a particularly high investment just to pull someone up to par, there are very few units throughout all of Fire Emblem that genuinely require this sort of favouritism if we want them to be viable. And yes, I know that you're now thinking about Bantu or Karla or similar, but they're very much the exception rather than the rule.

And other reclass resources~ Think Heart Sealing Mozu; that same seal could be used for Corrin shenanigans, Servant 1 reclass if you´re boring and insecure, MAID EFFIE! Think of the possibilities! And maybe specific effective weaponry, Est does join in SD with a Ridersbane I believe on a map full of Cavs...

Another thing to consider would be if the high investment unit covers a niche not directly available. To remain with the prior example, Villager/MoA Mozu is reason for despair, Archer/SNiper Mozu is your most reliable, ranged, high damage unit in CQ and offers the Archer line to a few of her friends~ Est on the other hand joins after Caeda had almost 20 chapters to rampage across all of Archanea with her special horse skewer, Minerva be out the swinging axes at A-rank and Catria and Palla have been around ballin. She does nothing your army doesn´t already have copious amounts off. Same with Amelia I belive, though I think Ross has some opportunities outside of carrying his dads weapons? Not sure, haven´t played much of Sacred Stones.

I suppose I might be talking about growth units more than high investment units here? Bantu is probably a high investment unit too, but with low growths to boot.

Viewing Fire Emblem from a perspective of efficiency is so 2010s. Hence forth I suggest all tier lists be ranked by how fun a unit is to use. So Astrid is S tier and Lehran is F Tier (can't even attack without devoiding another unit of their ability to attack! What the hell is that!?).

Shaky Jones, alt account found. Get rattled lvl 1 skeleton, you need to lvl up!

On that note... in Three Houses, basically every unit is a growth unit, barring staff. So my question is, would Catherin be a high investment unit? If you recruit her early she´s almost guaranteed to outstat your whole army, yet the sentiment for her is she requires a lot of time/tutoring to get into better classes...

  4. Hey hey sheeple, the guy with the FE Engage unit discussion threads here.

I was wondering if you all would be interested in making threads for the individual Emblems, collect and present all their info in said thread ("re-/join time", stats, effects, skills, etc.) and then discuss what the Emblem is good for, who it is good for, any situations they were unexpectedly good in, where and who they were bad on, unit/class-combiantions that worked out and so on and so forth, maybe with your top picks (with reasoning of course) for who to stick it on?

Yes for discussion, No for no discussion. Thanks for y´alls attention in any case.

Consider, for example, that Robin and Alear are literal amnesiacs, and that Corrin spent his life cooped up in a castle up until his first taste of combat. It's hard to justify these characters waging successful campaigns, but them being gifted with a turnwheel would do just that.

    ?

I think it´s easier to believe someone to be a good leader/strategist than god saying "Here´s a wheel, turn back time as you need." Like, maybe it´s the impression that there is an unusual density of smart strategists in FE, but I don´t thinks that´s the case considering the amount of remakes, and individual, but loosely and through significant amounts of time, connected continents.

Don´t know about Alear, but they waged war in the prologue, no?

And Corrin is receiving education (i´d presume, fuck know what Garon is doing) in the one nation on the known planet that likes going to war. Their big sister being a whole host of insanities waiting to wreck havoc (which is... probably a detriment, ngl), Leo being a strategist and our big bro Xander being...... I guess the General of the Armies while Garon is sitting on his throne doing El Presidente Garon things?

  7. All of them. Where´s our famines, our floods our earthquakes, where´s the natural disasters (so not a fuckoff big dragon in the sky) that etch themselves into the memory of it witnesses...

Where´s the illnesses and the malnutrition and the religious effort to work through it? Naga is dead, she won´t hold your hand, grab a whip and commit a weee bit of self-flagellation? Or maybe you want a letter for 100 goldpieces telling you, you´re going to heaven?.

Where´s the animals? Bears, Wolves, Boars all legitimate threats in medieval Europe...whermst? Birds are a lie and so are hounds.

Where´s the trouble in communication, are we in the 15th century and everyone hires professional scribes? Why do we have a Lingua Franca, but noone speaks anything but it? Where´s the messenger?

How many courts have we had depicted yet, where royalty and clergy are deeply connected? If you rule through divina favente clementia than should god not have a servant at their side? Throw a side eye on what da boi doin? Where the hell is the clergy and the religion overall anyway... oh look here´s a nice lvl 1 staff user of said religion and 14 chapters later you might get someone with the rank of bishop... whoopdidoo, here´s the gods kid with no memory whatsoever.

Where´s the literal convoy? Moving armies is a lot of work, in any age, but in FE you march from here to there and battle with no second thought... ah a weapons shop right next to the remote place, delivering standardized weapons in large enough quantities for an entire army. Food! for people. for animals (which don´t exist). From where, how much and how do we move it? Put the benched ones in front of the carriage? Has any FE ever acknowledged the need for a dedicated place to take a dump? Clean hands aren´t invented before the 19th century.

    Rats.

So, I don't know how or why number progression came to be the defining factor in people's minds for whether a game is an RPG. Because it absolutely isn't. Levels and gear are tangential.

The one and only thing that makes a game an RPG is choice. Narrative/personality choice, character build customization, or party customization. Without at least one of these things, a game is not an RPG, period.

    Unpopular video game fact.

i´d think a choice being possibly a failure - rolling a 1 - is more essential to roleplaying. Are you really playing a role, if everythings goes your way? The fuck do i know tho, my F5 key looking hella ragged after BG3.

And if making a decision is the only qualifying factor, then tetris is a RPG. Which hey, I always wanted to be 1 wide and 4 tall, but unfortunately...

I think I belong in the minority with this, but I don't think it's unpopular at all to say that I enjoyed Ys VIII more than any Xenoblade Chronicles game manly for being factpaced and less romantic than like Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

I assume this is a typo, but the idea of a podcast "Jin DESTROYS Rex with FACTS and LOGIC" is modestly amusing.

Explaining the turnwheel mechanic via the lore isn't dumb. It plays into "the hero prevailed because divine providence was on his side because he was good", and gives a practical explanation to how the MC conveniently won 20 consecutive battles despite being a kid with questionable combat experience fighting 60 year old master tacticians when losing one such battle would've doomed him.

we have 60 year old strategy farts of our own. And I do think established strategy begins to fail against someone who just doesn´t play by the same rule. Like some youngin, throwing around and seeing what sticks, as opposed to the old guy, adhering to his proven rulebook.

One good way to represent a middle-eastern faction like Persia would be to have war elephants.

For inclusiveness, we´ve decided to hand you an Elephant.

Fuck it, Merlinus with an Elephant powered caravan. Go ahead, try and steal something.

Alternatively, a mission where the player has to protect a herd/the sacred elephant.

Anyway, the further away FE stays from multi-tile units, enemy and player alike and all it´s movement hindering implications, the better.

  10. I have 2 more suggestions.

Aight, I wanted to try this, but never got around to doing it, so I´ll either condemn or bless you.

    Spoiler

Ninja -> Master Ninja Corrin, regular jointimes, reclass after tutorial is over. +SKL/-LCK

    Lvl 1 [Nohrian Trust]

    Lvl 10 [Hoshidan Unity]

    Lvl 25 [Quixotic]

    Lvl 35 [Skilltaker]

Corrin shall be armed at all times with a [Chopstick +2]

    Their PU-Unit:

Malig Knight Jakob (I guess this implies FemCorrin?), reclass after tutroial is over.

    Lvl 1 [Ignis]

    Lvl 10 [Tactical Advice]

    Lvl 25 [Wary Fighter]

    Lvl 35 [Dual Guarder]

Additional Skills: Either [Winged Shield] or [Mov+1]

If the build doesnt work out, you just have a generic Master Ninja Corrin and a Malig Knight Jacob, boohoo.

And putting the laughter into slaughter, the bloodthirsty

    Spoiler

Berserker Reina, join in her regular Rev. chapter

    Lvl 1 [Gamble]

    Lvl 10 [Life or Death]

    Lvl 25 [Quixotic]

    Lvl 35 [Lifetaker]

Additional Skills: [Any Breaker-Skill] of your choice, may change depending on map.

The fearsome Reina is at all times equipped with her trusty [Berserker Axe] and thus joins with at least a C-Rank in Axes.

    I love this.

Might have to give Sakura a couple statboosts/-edits, according to wiki.org Nohrian King doesn´t have any actual growths and even with Aptitude her growths are ~50-60%.

Also, can we make more than one suggestion? Or will that depend on the amount of people partaking in the shenanigans.

  12. What are the limits of stat edits you are willing to commit? :3

Also, maybe check this one out for ideas:

You know what, [Nohrian King Sakura].

She shall have base stats as she comes, a C-Rank in Axes and in her inventory she shall carry a [Handaxe], an [Adamant Club], a [Concoction] and a [Battle Seal].

Her lvl 5 skill shall be [Nobility] her lvl 10 skill shall be [Aptitude] for before one leads a King must hone her skills and her lvl 25 skill shall be [Inspiration] and lvl 35 skill shall be [Inspiration].

Add [Axefaire], [Voice of Peace], [Charm] as you want.

Should you be capable of defeating Anthony, Sakura shall find the Nohrian treasure [Bölverk] in his possession and use it.

This is the unpopular opinions thread, but...  I can't agree here!  At least for games that aren't Three Houses or Awakening (as those games are dominated by skill choices instead, and more generally have Large Numbers that dull the impact of +2 to a stat).  You don't need to have looked up the growths and memorized them, just look at what the stats are Right Now.  If you have a fave unit but with one bad stat, throwing stat boosters in their direction is potent in most FEs.  It's both intuitive to casual players ("Hey, RD Haar needs more Speed" or "FE8 Marisa could use some Str") and effective in older FEs, where +2 Defense can be extremely significant.

The first Speedwing in RD drops, to my knowledge in 2-3, so right between chapters where Haar would be usable, as a result you would be sitting on a Speedwing doing nothing and with the above point about foresight, there is no guarantee when or how Haar comes back (of course, this is after the first routsplit, so one might expect some degree of uncertainty in terms of availability). The other Speedwing is 3-9, which is fair enough I guess, although this too is a chapter Haar isn´t available in and then Endgame 1 (if that´s what it´s called).

As for Marisa, same deal, joins in chapter 10, first Energy Ring available in chapter 7 through thievery, then 12 going forward.

  14. The following implies not looking up or knowing the stats of enemies by heart because you replayed the game for the umpteenth time.

Fire Emblem does not provide the information for stat boosters to work well, much less efficiently and don´t they sell for only like 1/10 the price? Whoopdedoo, your side objective equals 2 Javelins. You have no information on enemy stats in the future and no information on the growths of your characters. And going off of base stats is strange too, because the good unit is only being made slightly better (if even that), the middling unit might just hit the 1 map spd benchmark and then slow down again because fuck you, and the bad unit... is probably still bad and no amount of boots will fix it.

I´m gonna suffocate someone with Spirit Dust.

On that note, I think Valentia has Cheese as statboosters? Could we let it mature for a bigger increase or would it decrease?
