    December 2023

Announcing a major game for December 2023 in a September Direct would be an incredibly interesting move! Although by that point, they'd only need to wait a month and they could release it in January like they did with Engage. And with two other TBS JRPGs coming out in November - on the same day no less! - I'm not sure it's the wisest idea to do that. At this point, I think waiting for Early 2024 is the way to go. THAT BEING SAID, I'll take a Genealogy remake as soon as possible thank-you-very-much!

  2. I liked it but I don't love it. The DLC really soured me on the potential of future playthroughs, as it seems like we'll have to replay it each playthrough to get the characters. Add into that the backpedaling for grinding supports and Engage is a game that doesn't favor what I like. That being said, the game was going for gameplay, and I think for the most part that's where it succeeds. It stinks that I don't like it as much as I want to though. When Awakening and Three Houses came out, I played each of those roughly every day for nearly a year, if not more. Even Fates, which I didn't play as much, got a lot of playtime after release when I only had that and Awakening to play at points in my life. (I mean, I had Echoes and Pokemon Sun/Moon, but I'm not the largest fan of the former and once I beat the latter I didn't care to do more.)

Honestly, there was a time a few weeks back when I forgot that Engage actually came out! It became forgettable, and that's a real shame.

Early on I and others in my life (and on the internet from what I've seen) compared Engage to a Saturday morning cartoon. I think that still stands. But like Saturday morning cartoons, this game isn't something you want to revisit too often, as it may not hold up as well as the first time. (In terms of shipping, while I do think M!Alear/Nel is more "canon" than others due to the DLC, I think I still like M!Alear/Yunaka better.)

What pairings did Radiant Dawn shut down? Path of Radiance didn't have any paired endings to begin with (because they knew they were making Radiant Dawn). If anything Radiant Dawn used it's data transfer and status as a sequel to double down on at least on pairing, albeit a non romantic one; Soren's tower Convo with Ike which can only be seen if they had an A rank in Path of Radiance.

Every Ike paired ending that wasn't Soren (or Ranulf) that could have been read as romantic was shut down. Lethe in particular stands out. But maybe that's just me.

  4. Honestly yup. I didn't like how Radiant Dawn shut down some of my ships and pairings, and I didn't like how it implemented supports. (The support thing actively ruined my enjoyment of the entire game.)

Having too many canonized pairings hurts my enjoyment of the game as much as having NO paired endings does. (Looking at you Engage.) Shipping is part of the reason I love Fire Emblem, and canonizing pairings takes away a major aspect of shipping because it limits the types of relationships we get to see in-game.

I'm fine with a single couple, or even two depending on the size of the cast, but any more than that just makes things less interesting.

But then look at the difference between fully-optimised Awakening kids and completely non-optimised Awakening kids. If there were a hypothetical Awakening sequel that took the kids from your Awakening save file and the skills they inherited from their parents, then that absolutely could break the game wide open in a way that I don't think would be fun.

I think it'd be a lot of fun, if done correctly. (Or not. I'm occasionally a fan for broken beginnings.*) For Awakening specifically (although for other games and scenarios it can be adopted), there are some ways around this. The first is the direct transfer of a character. The second is a stat boost, as you mentioned. A third is to split the difference between the two and have the characters' skills be adapted for the new game. For example, Galeforce works differently in Fates than it does Awakening. So, for example, if a character who knew Galeforce in Awakening moved to Fates, then maybe they'd gain the Fates' version (read: the new game's version) of the skill rather than the old game version. For special weapons and whatnot, that's a case-by-case basis. Do they get to use the wapon because they brought it over, or is the weapon still subject to weapon-rank-lock?

Then again, I'm the type of person who wants to combine Awakening and Fates in a remake because it seems like a fun way to play with the time and dimension travel aspects of both games.

But even that level of optimization is secondary to the relationships and character bonds created over the first game. My big question would be about how to carry that into the next game, not about optimization. But given this fandom, it's a very good thing to worry about.

*In that I like when characters can use skills and spells early, but they aren't much more effective than other early-game skills. In Three Houses, it's HILARIOUS to teach Lysithea Dark Spikes T at the beginning of the game, or have Hilda learn Bolting ASAP. But neither are much more effective than other early-game spells the characters have.

  5. Either original or Three Houses. Both anime.

To me, Three Houses has the most potential for multiple seasons, spin-offs, and overall engagement (heh). You can either do the different routes as one to two seasons each or combine a few of them into one main route and then do the others as OVAs or movies. (My personal choice is the latter, but that's just me.) You've got a lot of built-in character development with some filler in terms of the paralogues if needed, and you can appeal to multiple audiences due to the school and war settings.

  6. Awakening is my favorite game, overtaking Sacred Stones (although it has some competition with Blazing Sword these days), and the game I've spent the most amount of time playing. I played it every day for a year straight when I first got it, and it reminded me of the love I had for the series after Shadow Dragon turned me off when that game came out. There was a time in my life where all I had was my 3DS and about five games, and I'd alternate between runs of Awakening and Revelation. I love it.

Nowadays I don't play it much due to the fact that after 900+ hours, I'm pretty burnt out on the game - and my 3DS can't hold a charge for longer than 10 minutes without needing to be plugged in - but I'm almost ready to start a playthrough of the Project Thabes version of the game and see what's there.

Now if only the Project Thabes version would let Lissa and Priam marry so that Owain can claim he descended from the Radiant Hero. It'd be great!

EDIT: I have found out that Lissa and Priam can indeed marry in Project Thabes, according to its support document. Let the ships sail!

  7. Expect: Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong in that order.

    Wild-cards: Metroid and Smash Bros

Want: Fire Emblem (either Three Houses* or something completely original)

*It has a massive audience and appeal already, it can get the whole "high school anime" fans and the "war story anime" fans in one swoop, and between DLC and Three Hopes, you've got some nice material to make side-movies out of.

    Steven Universe is Cartoon Network.

That said, the likes of The Owl HouseAmphibia, or Star Vs. The Forces of Evil. Or, if you want their biggest commercial success of the last decade, Phineas & Ferb.

'm aware. The point is more that there's an audience for those types of shows.

Sorry if this has already been asked, but, how does everyone feel about the life stone/extra health bars?

I`m kinda mixed on them. On one hand, it helped bosses last longer, making them more of an actual threat.

On the other hand, I felt they hardly had an impact later in the game.

I don't hate them, and they certainly make things more challenging, but I think I'd like a little more thrown in, if that makes sense. Standard RPGs can do things like play with the boss' resistances and attacks, and bring in reinforcements that don't just feel annoying. You whittle down a boss's HP with Fire spells because they're weak to that, after enough HP is depleted, they'll throw up a long-term resistance spell or just gain a resistance to Fire. Here, if you plan well enough, you can wipe out several if not all of the extra health bars with little-to-no resistance.

I think I'd like it a little better if - and only on occasions - bosses had two extra health bars. After depleting the first (or second?) one, they retreat to a secondary area (on the same map) but their weapons and mooks and resistances change, so that you have to switch up your strategy. I don't want it to be like That One Griss Fight, but something else. A little mix between the Second Major Dungeon Boss in Persona 5 and the two battles against Walhart in Awakening.

Imagine fighting boss that's a General with such high HP and Defense that you feel like you NEED to use Magic...only for said character to retreat during Phase 2, and his new placement is set in an Anti-Magic zone. Or something like that.

General Alfred. I grew quite fond of Alfred and didn't want to drop him, but he wasn't cutting it as an Avenir. I took note of his high defense and strength, and thought, screw it, he'll make a good general. And he sure did! He actually surpassed Jade. His luck was way better, so he didn't eat as many crits later on, and his defense too was superior. I didn't think he'd end up being so consistently useful, but there he was, tanking stuff in the lategame. Not bad.

I did Great Knight Alfred on my first playthrough, and he was AMAZING. (I did use Starsphere to get him to snuff after dropping him midgame and then reclassing and training him.) He and Roy were a phenomenal combination and a great heavy-hitter that worked with crowd control. I'm currently trying Great Knight Jade with Roy. She looks great in the class, but she isn't keeping up with everyone else. I may switch Alfred to Great Knight and keep him with Roy again...or maybe I'll do General Alfred! (Although on this run I'm a little opposed to it. I have Madeline as a General with Ike because the General/Ike combination is BUSTED.* General Jean with Micaiah for the Magical Girl Boy Armor and just for fun as a Magic Armor unit.** (Jean used to have Tiki, but she's my training Emblem right now.))

I also tried Martial Master Yunaka. It didn't work well, but it was an interesting attempt. I've since reclassed Yunaka to Wolf Knight and gave her the House Leaders Emblem.

For Playthrough 2, I made Clanne a Martial Master, and he was one of my MVPs. He had amazing Strength, great Resistance, solid Luck, and the House Leaders. I was going for Deku 2.0, and this build did NOT disappoint.

*I also didn't want to use Ike with Nil. Nil may give better synergy, but I just don't care for the character.

**Madeline was my first choice, but getting her Magic up to snuff was painful and ultimately wasted time and effort. Jean had been a Griffon Knight beforehand, so he had as much Magic as he was going to get...which still doubled what Madeline had.

  11. Building up original IPs so they can bolster Marvel and Star Wars IPs when they're in a slump (like now) as well as promote them during the downtime between Disney Princess movies. And more original cartoons please. Disney is too big to NOT know there's an audience for it (see Gravity Falls and Steven Universe). To not cater to that audience feels like a missed opportunity, especially since HBO now won't.

  12. Casual clothing for characters. While I oscillate between amused and annoyed at the anachronistic style of clothing, I can't deny that I love the drip each character has. It makes me sad that Fates doesn't really have this when I go back to play it, partially due to the similarities between the two games. Honestly, in a Fates remake, this is the one realistic change I'd like to see made.*

*Other changes I'd like to see but probably won't happen:

Change in story so that in Revelation, ALL previously recruitable characters can be recruited and live.

Layla is now playable and not just a weird NPC. Just make it like Heroes where Dancers can't dance one another.

    No more Corrinsexual characters.

Cut the Deeprealms and just make it time travel or something similar. The deeprealms create more character problems than they solve IMO.

DLC characters like Lucina, Ike, and others can be romanced. (With the exception of Marth since he's married.)

Fates remake sold in a two-for-one pack with an Awakening remake, and whichever game you choose first gives you the chance to get bonuses on the second game.

  13. Not really? I love Engage and Three Houses for different reasons, but I play both for similar reasons - characters and interactions (shipping included). The biggest thing holding me back from playing Three Houses is the 400+ hours I've spent playing it over the past 3.5 years. I'd love to do a new playthrough and romance Rhea or Manuela, or romance Shamir/Marianne/Constance all over again, but I've played the game so many times that I just get bored and burnt out very quickly. The same is true for Awakening and Revelation.

In terms of retrospective, playing the latest game in the FE franchise usually lets me appreciate the previous one and what it achieved or at least tried to achieve. It helps me see that the franchise is always standing on the shoulders of previous entries, and that's something to be appreciated. Not every series does so, and the ones that do don't always do it well.

And I like Ivy's relationship with Alear so far. It adds depth to Ivy's character IMO, going from someone who was an enemy, to an ally, to one who worships you, to a valued ally, to a lover. The idea that Ivy went from being someone who worshipped Alear out of defiance to one who can now worship openly, to one who can be in a relationship with their god...I don't know, I just like it.

After Playthrough 2, I stand by some of this, but I think I like Mauvier/Ivy and Diamant/Ivy just as much if not a little more. And after Pact Ring'ing her, Goldmary, Lapis, and Yunaka again, Yunaka still wins. Lapis now ties with Ivy for second place due to her great design (in general and also while Engage+'d) and surprisingly romantic post-Pact Ring stuff, but I like Lapis/Alcryst just too much. Yunaka also just synergizes with Engage+ better IMO.

    So yeah, M!Alear x Yunaka and F!Alear x Alfred.

I'm also a fan of Clanne x Citrinne now. And Merrin x Chloe. And Celine x Fogado more than before. I'm not sure about Timerra, but that girl doesn't seem like the relationship type.

I'm still curious to see how the new characters in Wave 4 will change things.

What do you reckon it'll be about? We know it has something to do with another world, and fell dragons, I reckon/hope:

      Reveal hidden contents

it'll be about Sombron's world, and we'll learn about the Zero emblem.

The general speculation IIRC is that Fell Xenologue is about

    Spoiler

a parallel world where our heroes are actually the bad guys and the Fell Dragon is actually good. Emblem Camilla and Hector (and I think Soren) hint at this, and the trailer shows a hooded character who looks almost exactly like Fogado, lending even more credence to the theory.

Personally like Sigurd since she gets Bld, Dex, and Def while Sigurd gets someone capable of wielding great lances.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely go with this pairing next time.

    14 hours ago, DefyingFates said:

If you have the DLC, Hector was talked up as a great choice for her back when Wave 2 came out because of his Heavy Attack skill. Maybe that's something you could look into?

I'll look into it! I do have the DLC, although I'm leaning towards Hector on Jade. They have some decent synergy, and I like how she looks Engaged with him. (I tried out Diamant (both as a Wyvern Rider and a Successeur), but I honestly prefer Bond Ring Chrom for that extra 5% activation rate on Sol.)

  17. Is Ike really a good Emblem for Timerra? I understand that he's a great Emblem for pretty much every physical unit, but does he synergize with her well? In my first playthrough, I took Ike off Timerra and gave him to Jade. (10/10 would do again.) Timerra had Eirika before I settled on Lucina, and I loved that combo. On Playthrough 2 I did the same thing. For Playthrough 3, I want to mix it up, but also want an Emblem that synergizes well with Timerra. I have the DLC, so maybe the House Leaders?

Anyways, my potential buids for Playthrough 3 are below, if that helps with the recs:

    Spoiler

Merrin - Warrior with Eirika (?) Maybe. I'm undecided.

Chloe - Warrior with Soren (I'm trying a silly Radiant Bow build here.)

    Veyle - Veronica

Timerra - Ike or House Leaders, but I'm really open to suggestions!

Celine - Chrom (I'm really liking the synergy here. I'll need more than a few endgame levels to really see if I like it better than Marth, but it's growing on me.)

Fogado - Sigurd. (Like Celine & Chrom, I need more than a few late-game levels to try out this build. Maybe Sigurd can go with Timerra?)

Ivy - Camilla (I did it this playthrough 10/10 will do again)

Hortensia - Micaiah (I tried Celica, and it just wasn't working)

Kagetsu - Marth (I think I started this too late on my current playthrough, particularly for Kagetsu as a Wyvern Rider. I'd like to start it off right this time.)

Alcryst - Lyn (I did it this playthrough 10/10 will do again...unless Lyn works well with Timerra. Then Alcryst will have the House Leaders just like Playthrough 1)

Lapis - Martial Master with Lucina (I like how Lapis looks when Engaged with Lucina, and I like how Lapis can be Sakura from Naruto 2.0 here as a Martial Master.)

Alfred - Probably a Great Knight (again) with either Lucina (to match the silly prologue) or Roy (again)

Panette - Warrior with Leif - I'm going for that 776 Damage Combo ...or at least 400...

Jade - Hector (I like the synergy here, and she looks good in the armor.)

    Framme - Eirika. (Twin power!)

Clanne - High Priest with Celica (I like the outfit better than Sage, and I like the multi-purpose capabilities.)

Goldmary - Ike (?) (I've considered Chrom as well, so Goldmary could be my Dual Assist Combo girl, but I want to try that build out on someone else. I also really like Chrom on Celine so far. Alternatively, maybe Sigurd, so she can Dual Assist even further?)

  18. First off, Yunaka looks great as a Magic Cannoneer!

Also, Enchanter seems interesting. I'm liking the Lucina builds for the class, although I'm personally unsure of who I'd like to put there. I want to put Lucina on Lapis in my next playthrough as I like how Lapis looks when Engaged with Lucina (and this may provide a small niche for the character in this playthrough), but I can also see Jean or someone like Merrin being able to pull the same thing. (Although Jean is going Griffon Rider in my next playthrough.)

As for Magic Cannoneer, I was thinking Pandreo, but if it's linked to Dex...maybe this would be a way for Etie to contribute something in a playthrough outside of just being "early-game Alear" if people wanted to use her? Or maybe I'll just put Yunaka in the class for the lolz.

Considering Engage has a postgame, I assume the DLC story will work like the DLC Paralogues: added to the main campaign.

That said, I wonder if Engage is also likely to get a spinoff/ sequel.

I can certainly see the appeal, and I'd love for the Emblem mechanic to come back in some way, shape, or form, but I'm not sure I'd want to see it in a sequel to Engage. I'd rather see something like this in a TMS sequel proper* than Engage 2. Engage feels like a farewell to the 3DS-era of Fire Emblem to me, completing a trilogy with Awakening and Fates in terms of story-type, colorfulness (and cheesiness/charm) of characters, and overall tone and aesthetic.** An Engage 2 would feel like a bit too much, at least for me.

I think right now Fire Emblem can have a pretty clear 3-5 year path ahead, with it looking similar to Pokemon*** if they so desire. IntSys could easily alternate between a new release, a spin-off (preferably but not limited to Warriors), and a remake pretty much every year to keep content fresh and to keep Heroes alive.

2023: Engage (with a potential for Genealogy depending on whether or not the rumors are true and/or they want to launch the game with the rumored Next Gen Switch.)

2024: Genealogy Remake (similar to the above case), or a remaster/rerelease of Three Houses/Hopes for the Next Gen Switch

2025: Genealogy Warriors (or TMS 2 with a ten-year anniversary, or a new spin-off altogether.)

    2026: New Original game.

    2027: Warriors 2 (& a ten-year anniversary edition)

2028: FE 6 and potentially 7 remake. (I'd be the 25th anniversary of the first FE game released in the West. I'm sure they'll do something. Then again, look at how they treated Genealogy...)

*Despite my own ideas for TMS 2 using FE characters more like Personas (and character foils for the non-FE cast), I do think that using the characters like Emblems would actually be a better step for the series overall, so long as they're willing to step outside of just the Lords of each game. Maybe the MC can only use the Lords, and for each other character, they'd have to recruit the Emblems of said archetype they express in order to gain the same abilities? For example, the MC can use Sigurd while his lancer would need to find Seth or someone like that to be able to use Calvary abilities? (...okay, not the best example, but you get the idea...)

**As a random side-thought, if Engage ever decides to add more DLC, I think Children Units would be good. They can even just do a Promise Ring situation as something that gives powers akin to a Pact Ring, but you don't want the implications of a Wedding Ring. Multiple alternate worlds exist in the game, and more are confirmed by the DLC snippets. I don't think it'd be that hard to say, "hey I'm your future kid from an alternate timeline" and come up with a reason for them to be here. Or not. But 'd certainly love a surprise fifth wave of DLC with at least Eliwood, Alm, and Azura...

***Pokemon really should be on a 3-4 year cycle with a larger team, alternating between mainline games, a major spin-off (they can switch between Let's Go and Legends if they need more time for one or the other), and a remake. During the Major Spin-off years, they can build in a minor spin-off like Mystery Dungeon remakes or Conquest 2 or something else. But The Pokemon Company doesn't want to expand despite desperately needing to do so, and it's going to hurt them until they do.

  20. So next week for Wave 3...that feels right. April 5 or 7 or so for Wave 4 also would feel about right. Hopefully early on the 7th, as I have that day off from work and it'd be nice to spend that day playing the new content. April 12 would also be fine, but I'd only have a weekend to play the game, and a short one at that due to social obligations.

Also, as a side question, do we know if the new DLC will work more like Fates, where it's a side-story that's completed on its own and we can recruit the characters in any run after a certain point afterwards, or is it more like Engages' DLC Emblems where we need to beat the level to recruit the characters?

I'll still probably try to delay Playthrough 3 (aka the Romance Alfred Playthrough) until then, although depending on the rumors of the story and recruitable characters, I may want to save that for Playthrough 4...

and then maybe a new game announcement in june (copium)

Genealogy remake, launching with the Switch 2, coming this holiday season??? (Also Copium...) (Although I do have a crackpot theory that sometime after the Switch's successor launches, IntSys will release a remaster/port of Three Houses and Three Hopes combined, with extra content for Three Hopes. Either that, or a third Fodlan game that answers questions that Three Hopes never did.)

  21. Someone on Reddit posited that Wave 3 should release in March and Wave 4 in April. I think that's a good timeline and one that many here echo, but I can also see Wave 3 and 4 releasing in March. We could have Wave 3 as early as next week but no later than the second week of March, and then Wave 4 in the final week of March, depending on when the promotion for TotK starts. I think at the latest it'll come out by the first week of April. Nintendo will need at least the second week of April up until release in the second week of May to get a full month. Given that this is THE Zelda game, I can see them extending promotion to the entire month of April, which would move the Wave 4 release to the end of March.

For the rumored FE4 remake, this works out pretty well as also, depending on when they want to announce and release it. (Early 2024 is likely, but if Nintendo has the sequel to the Switch ready to go and wants to start selling in 2024, and the FE4 remake isn't a dual platform game, then we may see it Fall 2023. That's unlikely but not impossible imo.)

  22. From what I've played and remember:

    Binding Blade - Top tier

Blazing Sword - Mid-tier at best, although it leans towards lower-tier. Lyn is good if we counter her, and Guy is fun, but he's about it. Karel and Karla join so late and with so many issues that they aren't good. ...and I think that's it.

Sacred Stones - Mid-to-Low Tier. Joshua is great, but Marisa gets flak for a reason.

Path of Radiance - I don't remember much, but we love Mia and Stephan was AMAZING Mid-Game. I'll go Mid-Tier.

Radiant Dawn - High-Tier from what I remember. Mia with the right supports was a Dodgetank the likes of which I've rarely seen. And we've all seen Edward take down the final boss in silly videos.

    Shadow Dragon - I don't remember enough.

Awakening - High Tier, if only because there aren't really any bad units, and due to reclassing nearly any character can be a Myrmidon/Swordmaster. Lon'qu is good though.  Say'ri is also, despite her not having nearly as many supports.

Fates - Mid-Tier. Ryoma's good, but he's really the only good one. Hana is passable, but she's completely overshadowed by Ryoma. Hinata is best as an Oni Savage. But I guess Odin and Hisame are good enough? (Well, Hisame anyways. Odin's bad no matter what I try to do to help him out.)

Echoes - Mid-Tier, but higher than most. Like the other 3DS games, you can make pretty much any guy into a Dread Fighter, and some of them are actually good. Grey is one of my favorite characters in the franchise due to the remake, so he alone carries them up for me.

Three Houses - Annoyingly Low-Tier. Swordmasters are good, but they aren't great. Felix is good as a Swordmaster, but in a game where you want high movement and Canto, landlocked units just can't really keep up.

Engage - Mid-Tier at the moment for me. Lapis wasn't performing as well as I liked as a Swordmaster, so I made her a Wyvern Knight. I haven't used Kagetsu yet, but I've heard great things, so I'll do so on my current playthrough.
