  1. Welcome!

Awakening is a pretty broken game in the best of ways, and there aren't many units you can mess up, so go ahead and have fun! In terms of mechanics, probably the more helpful things to know:

Pair-Up is the staring feature and main mechanic in this game. It gives stat bonuses and occasionally allows the pair-up unit to attack or defend. The higher your supports, the more stats and attack/defense opportunities you'll have.

Units have a Primary Class and two Secondary Class. Units can Promote to two optional classes once they reach Lvl 10 and you have a Master Seal. (I.e. Cleric to either War Monk/War Cleric or Sage; Cavalier to Paladin or Great Knight; Archer to Sniper or Bow Knight.) You can change to a Secondary Class with a Second Seal.

Units learn skills at Lvls 1 & 10 in their Base Class (or first-tier class if you prefer) and at Lvls 5 & 15 in their Promoted Class (or second-tier class if you will).

Finally, if you like the game, BUY AND DOWNLOAD THE DLC BEFORE THE 3DS/WIIU SHOP CLOSES DOWN PERMANENTLY.

  2. All of the previews and gameplay remind me of Awakening (as do the blatant comparisons from the previews I've watched so far), and my hype level is through the roof. And MORE RECRUITABLE CHARACTERS THAT HAVEN'T BEEN ANNOUNCED VIA PARALOGUES??? YES. PLEASE.

  3. Just now, Seazas said:

Didn't 3H marketing at least TRY to match the Japanese stuff to some degree?

Not really, if I'm remembering correctly.

The Japanese stuff focused a lot of the characters, with the Japanese Nintendo Twitter account going over a character each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I think.

NoA focused on gameplay and mechanics, if/when they did focus on anything.

I can't really remember if NoA was more active for 3H than they are for Engage, but I do know their focuses were very different.

  4. Not really DLC, since I'm more or less resigned to the fact that Three Hopes isn't getting any, but I had a thought a few weeks (or was it a few months?) ago -

What if the devs left Three Hopes unfinished because they plan or planned to wrap everything up in a third game or massive expansion? We'd have Byleth, who pushes the House Leaders one way, Shez, who gives them another option in this "what if" scenario, and then a third Avatar for a third game who synthesizes the two?*

This game would be the Persona 4 Golden/Persona 5 Royal version of Three Houses, the definitive edition, potentially for a new console. And while Fire Emblem hasn't really done something like this before, Three Houses borrows a bit from the Persona series, and this would be just one more thing. Also Nintendo is no stranger to repackaging their games for the latest systems, particularly if the game is popular and sells great.

No idea if this would fall into the Musou gameplay or the standard Turn-Based gameplay, but either way, it's just a thought. And IF this was the case, maybe the future of Fire Emblem for the foreseeable future would look like:

    2023: Engage + DLC

    2024: Genealogy Remake

2025: Three Houses/Hopes Repackaged. (or2024, depending on how this is treated)

    2026: Original Game + Warriors 2

    2027: Another Remake

Anyways, it's just an idea. Carry on.

*In my head I waffle between calling this Three Horizons and Three Heroes (symbolizing both the Avatars and the House Leaders). No idea really what the plot would be, but I imagine it'd be an amalgamation of things - Shez would run into the House Leaders but would sneak off to Remire village and find Jeralt and Byleth. (The new Avatar would be the character helping Shez sneak off, be it a student or a soldier.) A match would ensue between the two, but the Knights of Seiros would intervene, and everyone makes their way back to Garrag Mach. After that, the Three Heroes each chose a different house, and the game goes from there. Maybe on NG+, all three characters can join one house for a new type of story. No idea, I'm really just spitballing here.

  5. Just a random thought, but we know there's another nation in Gradlon, right? What if we get some characters from there, and not the Four Hounds? (I can see that making up for Three Houses' lack of recruitable Agarthans.) That would mean we'd get an extra 6 characters, right? Add those six, maybe one or two more for random recruits (basically the standard Villager + a wild card), an enemy recruit if that's not counted in, and we're on our way to 40-ish characters. The DLC characters will probably bring us up to 45, assuming Gradlon actually functions as a kingdom despite being sealed.

  6. Two ideas that I won't share fully and a third I may cannibalize the second idea for:

Idea 1 - A French Revolution, American Revolution (blame Hamilton), and Victorian England inspired game. (Also Valkyria Chronicles.) The game would follow a group of youths and some mysterious tagalongs as they're drafted into the army to fight against an oncoming Empire led by a general-queen who committed a coup. They'd also be tasked to free a goddess who may or not be evil. Gameplay would be more akin to what I know of Vestaria Saga and Genealogy - maps would be massive and have multiple objectives and side-quests. Classes would have three tiers, but some of the tiers would be very weird. Flying units would be based off of WWI fighter pilots (and a little off of WWII bombers). For example - Pegasus Knights (who have a country based off of Mongolia as well) would focus more of obstructing enemy advancements and dropping small incendiaries on ground troops. When they promote, they can either go to Falcon Knights and carry more incendiaries or go to Dark Flier and carry different types of packages to drop with increased magical effects. Meanwhile Knights would promote to Generals and then have Marshals, who would be armored dragon riders who could house other flying units on their mounts, like giant, mobile, multi-tile bases. (One of the simplest ways to win a map in the late game is to locate the Marshal on the map if there is one and take them out. That will be FAR from easy though.) Elephant Riders would exist, but they'd be weird. The "Avatar" character would start the game with the world's first gun (called a Gaus), would promote to a tank unit, and then a mech-like unit. (BECAUSE I CAN.) As the game goes on, however, enemies will start to develop this technology and players' strategies may need to change. The Fire Emblem is a necklace. I do want to pitch this idea someday, as I imagine it as a quick "neo-pixel" style game someday.

Idea 2 - A three-generation game that follows a minor noble helping his lord take back his home in Gen 1, to said Lord allowing the expansion of his land into a Kingdom/Empire in Gen 2. The Children from Gen 1 will either be involved in the politics or the expansion, and will ultimately end up as martyrs or victims. Gen 3 would see the return of the classical FE story, as our heroes must stop the evil empire that their predecessors helped build. (For same-sex couples, the next gen would be the same units but adopted or fostered as a backstory. Stats and skills would pass down the exact same way.)

Idea 3 - Two step-siblings fight each other before joining forces I guess. This idea is based off of fairytales with a wicked stepmother (Cinderella, Snow White, etc) and Hamlet (aka The Lion King). A King/Lord would have been murdered, and his wife takes a new lover quite quickly. The new husband has a daughter who thinks that the stepmother is controlling her father. The Queen/Lady has a son who thinks his father was murdered by the new cousin. If the two cannot work together to figure out the truth, the kingdom may fall to civil war. I'm not sure if I want to frame the game as an in-world story being told ala 1001 Arabian Nights, or if it's something else.

    and Veyle. Coinidence?

Definitely not, but I thought it was more or less assumed that Veyle was a dragon of some sort. Maybe that was just me lol!

I honestly thought she'd be a dragon/manakete and would come with Corrin's Emblem. But even if the latter part is wrong (which is 99% is), I'm still positive she's a dragon of some sort.

Assuming two per game going forward (based on nothing other than feeling like it):

    Caeda & Tiki

    Alm & ...someone

    Seliph & Julia

No idea for Thracia - maybe Nanna and Ced?)

Lilina & Guinevere (although Fir would probably be a little more popular if FEH is anything to go by)

    Eliwood & Hector

    Ephraim & Innes (or L'Archel)

    Soren & Elincia

    Sothe & Kurthnaga

    Chrom & Robin

Azura & Kaze OR Hoshidan Siblings & Nohr Siblings (Or Azura, Hoshidan Siblings, & Nohr Siblings)

House Leaders & either Shez or Seteth/Flayn...or maybe Seteth/Flayn/Rhea.

Slight edit to my previous ideas:

Now that we know Eirika and Ephraim share a ring, I think SS would be Innes and L'Archel, if they go with two DLC Emblems per game.

Likewise, I think Azura would be a free DLC add-on to Corrin rather than her own Emblem, so they can do the whole Hoshido Siblings & Norh Siblings thing. The rest will be the same, I think.

We do. Not only because of leaks but the cutscenes already piece together a linear story. We have to meet Alfred at the temple and help him in a Firene scramble. Every single time Diamant + Brodia's shown its with Alfred and the Firene crew in our party. Including irreplaceable animated cutscenes. No real reason for Alear to choose either since Alfred's the first to come.

Sorry, I should have clarified. I know Alfred is coming first, but do we know about after Alfred? My guess was the game may be paced like:

    Intro Chapter(s)

    Meet and Join Alfred

We choose which other nobles to pick up after that (with their respective battles/cutscenes)

  10. Just a random and stupid question, but do we actually know if the game is one straightforward path? I've been thinking about it for the past few days, and I kinda realized that I wouldn't be surprised if the game pulled something akin to Sacred Stones, where players can choose which nobles to ally with/recruit first, and the others would scale with the game, if that makes sense. It'd be something like Mass Effect 2, where you can recruit specific characters at specific points, but the order you do so is different. (And the dialogue can differ at times as well due to that.) Or like how you can tackle any of the three paths in more or less any order in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet.*

Again, I don't know if the game will go this direction or if it's been confirmed that it won't, it's just something I feel would be pretty easy to do given the nobles and kingdoms.

*Yes, I know this isn't fully true. I fought the Fighting Team Star boss before the Fairy one...and before I got the Ghost and Ice badges...so I know you can do things out of order. I'm just using it as a partial example.

  11. Honestly either @Azz or @Metal Flash feel like the right answers, but have we thought of COMBINING THEM???

I feel like outside of Alfred and Celine, who seem to be some of the "starting nobles," each pair of siblings would start joined or easily obtainable on a specific route but could be recruited to other routes without much difficulty.

All Routes - Alear, Clanne, Framme, Vander, Alfred, Celine

    Azure Gleam - Diamant, Alcryst

    Golden Wildfire - Timerra, Fogado

Scarlet Blaze - Ivy, Hortensia (Hubert would totally roast Hortensia, and she'd roast him right back. It'd be hilarious.)

  12. I think we'll see a few more playable characters, if only because most FE games like to have duplicates for classes/options, even if it only shows as the difference between pre-promotes and regular units.* Even Fates made sure that nearly every playable class had at least two units in total.** We haven't seen another Peg Knight or Wyvern Rider, which is weird to me and is something we haven't really seen since Three Houses.***   Units like that make me think that there are more playable characters.

So yeah, I'm on the "we'll have between 3-6 more playable characters we haven't met yet" side of things. Not too many more I feel, but enough that we get a sense of the world and we don't feel confined to one character per class or type.

*More specifically, I'm thinking of Wyvern Riders. Most games (well, at least FE7 and beyond) seem to have a Wyvern Rider and then a Wyvern Lord (exceptions are SS and 3H).

**EXCEPT FOR ONI SAVAGE THANKS RINKAH.

***Three Houses is weird in general though, and at least we had several units who could function as Peg Knights if desired.

  13. No idea for Engaging other than Ike on Fogato potentially, but below are my ideas and impressions of the characters so far related to use:

    100% Will Use:

Alear (No idea on which version yet) - Emblem Marth or Emblem Corrin (Although I assume Veyle will be another Manakete, and I'll probably be basic and slot Corrin on her)

Framme - Punching Healer I'M IN - Emblem Micaiah maybe?

Diamant - He looks cool - Emblem Roy

    Jade - I like her armor -

Lapis - I like her class - Emblem Lucina probably.

Timerra - 100% every playthrough. I love her design and find her delightfully charming. Unless her supports are awful or her VA is super grating, I don't see this changing. - Emblem Eirika

Fogado - I think he'll be quite the fun character. - Either Emblem Ike or Emblem Lyn.

Merrin - Other than having a similar name to Kaladin's proto-character in The Way of Kings Prime, the class is called Wolf Knight. WOLF KNIGHT! HECK YES I'M USING HER! - Maybe Emblem Lyn or Emblem Sigurd.

Pannette - I like to think of her as Annette's daughter, so I'm gonna use her.

Seadall - He's a guy dancer. Those are rare. - Maybe Emblem Byleth?

Goldmary - I love her design and female Heroes are always the best.

Veyle - If playable. (And I'm assuming she is.)

Most Likely Will Use (Or At Least Train Up):

    Alfred - I'll likely need a Cav unit, and I don't mind early-game Cavs.

Celine - I'll need a solid mage, and I don't plan on using Clanne any longer than I have to unless I really like his character and supports.

Zelkov - I'm a fan on darker-skinned characters and I try to use them whenever possible. If Zelkov's recruitment is timely, I'll use him.

Yunaka - I actually really like her design

Hortensia - Her design has gone from "it's so bad and it doesn't fit the franchise" to "It's so bad it's good," for me, and I think her class may be interesting enough to try out.

Etie - I'm really just curious if the bodybuilding thing is just for flavor text or if it'll show up in her growths.

Alcryst - I like using Lords.

Citrinne - Maybe? It depends on how different she'll be from Celine.

Pandreo - His use depends on how healers and magic in general turn out, but I like having two healers per team, so I'm not opposed to using him. Besides, it may be fun for head-canons.

Rosado - I like Wyvern Riders (and I'm super curious about their supports)

Amber - I have a weird head-canon that he's Ferdinand and Flayn's kid, and I want to explore that.

Least Likely to Use* (Beyond Training Up for Supports):

Vander - I rarely use the Pre-promote Paladins in active battle unless I like them (Frederick/Rodrigue) or know there's a use for them (Seth/Titania). I'll wait to see how the fandom approaches Vander's usability before I make use of him too much.

Clanne - I'll use him in the beginning out of necessity, but he's going to have to win me over for me to keep him long-term. (It's far from impossible, but it's an uphill battle right now.)

Louis - I just don't care for his design.

Chloe - I don't care for her design, and I run hot-and-cold on Peg Knights anyways. I really hope there are other Peg Knights that can be recruited, or at least I can change another unit into a Peg Knight.

Boucheron - He's honestly between this category and the above. I don't know if I'll use him since I don't use Fighters that often and I don't like his design, but I can't say that I won't use him if I need an Axe user.

Kagetsu - I'm just not interested in his character.

*Of course this is always subject to change.

Can't say I wasn't expecting the Realm of Light to show up eventually, but I can't say I expected what we got either. I'm gonna need to watch the video a few times when I have more time. My first impressions were mixed. I like the OC looks and music, but I'm also not as sold on them as I was for the previous few books. (I liked the switch from Book 3's heavy metal to Book 4's dreamy to 5's techno when it came to music and designs.) ALSO, I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS SHARENA ERASURE ANY LONGER! Also-Also, was that a young Freya? A quick Wiki peak tells me that Seidr was a type of magic in Norse Mythology rather than an explicit purpose, and Freya was the goddess associated with said magic. (As is Odin.) The book cover also doesn't appeal to me as much as previous books, but I'm sure it'll grow on me with time.

Overall, I'm mixed and unsure of how to feel, and this is pretty normal, all things considered. It's not my favorite intro for a book, but I'm sure I'll learn to love the characters in time.

It's been two weeks, but I can say that my feelings on the music changed by the next day. I LOVE it now. The map opening/theme reminds me of Persona 5 Royal's song "Gentle Madman" due to the piano, and I adore it.

but with Engage finally laying the groundwork for a full Fire Emblem Warriors 2, I want it, and I want it bad.

Same! But it's also because of Engage that I think we won't see a Warriors 2 for a bit longer than preferred. I think that if KT and IntSys are going to do a Warriors game with another mainline FE game, then FE4 is the best bet. (Very closely followed up by the Tellius duology.) And given all of the rumors of an FE 4 remake, I think the timing of:

    January 2023: Engage

Late 2023 (if they're following the 2022 Pokemon route)/2024 (if they're not): Genealogy remake

    2025: Genealogy Warriors

ALL OF THAT SAID, you could very well be 100% accurate and Engage could lead into Warriors 2, which would be interesting to see.

I've seen this sentiment a lot, and to be honest I think it's missing the point. I'm not particularly mad that the feature is back, but it and resetting put a completely different level of pressure on the player and affect the entire experience. Same for casual mode. And that's coming from someone who resets a ton; but with DP, there's no need to look at numbers, make calculations, plan carefully, avoid careless actions or banking on lowish hit rates... Or rather, there's much, much less of a need to do those. Believe it or not, doing it all over again is not something anyone wants but, that's the entire point. You don't want to, so you play more carefully. The pressure's on. And when you succeed under these conditions, it feels great.

I don't necessarily disagree with this, but there have been FAR too many times when I've played Fates* and I've gotten most of the way (or in a few cases, all of the way) through a level only to have a random 3% crit force me to restart. When I was younger, maybe restarting and succeeding would feel more thrilling. Sometimes for earlier games it still does. But for some games, restarting after going too far in just makes everything feel like I just wasted 30 minutes to an hour of my life. And nowadays with time being a rare commodity, I don't really have the luxury or the patience to waste it on replaying a level because of a random crit that statistically shouldn't have happened.

*Usually this only applies to Fates, but since it's the most recent FE I've replayed, it's the one that is most on my mind. Awakening, FE7, FE8, and PoR don't really have this problem.

  17. Timerra easily in first place and Ivy in a surprisingly close second place. I think the main reason - well, outside of more representation that is - is that Timerra looks good in the game and in her official artwork, while Ivy looks best in her official artwork, but I'm not entirely sold on her in-game looks.

But this just really confirms that I like the official artwork of the characters more than the in-game portraits than most. Goldmary's design is really growing on me though.

For the guys, Diamant is probably my favorite, but he's in third place.

  18. So we've got the story from Awakening (more or less)

The Stands wait no Personas Emblems from Tokyo Mirage Sessions

The gameplay and base and bonding from Fates

The gacha mechanics (although toned down a LOT) and crazy abilities from Heroes

The mini-game quirky things from Three Houses also their character designs/children in some cases

This game is starting to feel like the "Best of 2010's FE Marathon," and I'm okay with that.

(I don't know if Ephriam gets the same treatment as the House Leaders as a combine spirit or what Ephriam's purpose with the rings from Eirika has since we first thought Ephriam was going to be DLC in the future?)

I know. That's why I put them there. I just don't think (or don't want to think because that's less fun) that they'll be the only DLC reps from their games.

  20. I don't really care about Resplendents, but I'm getting this one. I have a head-canon that in a world where Askr doesn't really exist, Alfonse and Sharena were other children of Chrom and Olivia's who didn't make it to the past. As such, having everyone decked out in Askran gear kinda builds that sibling look, even if it's just the wardrobe. (Artstyle-wise, regular B!Lucina would be better since Kozaki did the art there, but this version looks just as good if not better.)
