  1. Speaking of Kingdom Hearts, I'm actually playing through Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix right now through the All-In-One Kingdom Hearts package in preparation for Kingdom Hearts 4 (It took like, 14 years for Kingdom Hearts 3 to come out, so I'm pretty sure I'll have enough time to get through the whole series before 4 comes out). The first game's pretty simple to follow since it just seems to boil down to sealing the keyholes throughout the various worlds, most of which are Disney-themed. Not really a fan of the fact that I have to play through 7 different spinoffs (Or 4 spinoffs technically since 3 of the "games" included in the All-In-One package are just movies, really) plus the 3 numbered games in order to understand the complex overarching narrative but so be it. I agree that Kingdom Hearts could use a reboot because, well... sometimes a story should be simple rather than overly complicated, y'know?

Though if you ask me, no other series could use a reboot right now than Assassin's Creed. Now I'm one of the few AC fans who likes both the old & new games in this series (Yeah that's right. I enjoyed ACIII, Odyssey AND Valhalla along with AC1, The Ezio Collection and ACIV:BF). While I do enjoy Odyssey and Valhalla despite not really being "Assassin's Creed Games", I believe a reboot would be perfect in returning the series to the days when it was just Assassins, Templars, and fun parkour that wasn't oversimplified. Mirage may be a "return to form" in a way, but to be honest, an AC1 Remake/Reboot would be far better in returning the series to its roots.

  2. Replaying Persona 5 Royal… but on the Switch! - I was pretty excited when I heard that Persona 5 Royal was getting ported to the Switch, so I knew I’d buy it as soon as it came out. I initially played through the entirety of P5R on the PS4 a good bit ago, but I’ve since sold both that PS4 and all games I had with it, so this was a prime opportunity for me to re-experience the world of Persona 5. Been playing a lot of the game since the port launched and so far I’m at the 6th Palace in the game. Definitely plan on getting the P3P and P4G Switch ports as well.

Playing through Pokémon Scarlet- Pokemon Scarlet has been an interesting experience for not only having an open world to traverse but also 3 major quest lines and the game somehow being more bugged than the bug type gym. All in all, it’s a pretty fun experience overall despite the “features” everyone likes to talk about, though the game (along with Violet) did manage to sell millions of copies so at least I’m not the only one who paid full price for this game. 😁

Finishing the Mass Effect Trilogy with Mass Effect 3- Been playing through the Mass Effect Trilogy thanks to Mass Effect: Legendary Edition and it’s a fantastic series I must say. Played and beat ME1 and ME2 back to back then took a break before coming back to ME3 to finish the Commander Shepard Saga. Currently playing through the third game and enjoying it, though I will be sad when this 3-game journey is over. (I do acknowledge Andromeda’s existence, and I did snag it for like, 5 bucks, so I suppose I can see what that game’s all about after clearing ME3)

Also played and beat The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt back in December and I must say it’s absolutely phenomenal. One of the best games of its genre that I’ve ever played. Looking forward to The Witcher 4 and that Witcher 1 Remake (R.I.P. Assassin of Kings. You will not be forgotten!)

So a rant that I have, which I've been realizing as of late:

I really do not understand this obsession about the "good graphics" of some of the Nintendo Switch games I've been hearing. What the fuck makes them such hot shit anyway when there's already been stuff like this since PS3? Okay, fine, Zelda's actually good considering how the depiction of Hyrule adds to the worldbuilding. But Mario? Fuck you man, you just a polished turd to me when it's just the same her royal idiocy lacking the brain to use her Smash Bros moves against Bowser and at least put up a fight. Or Link's Awakening Remake? Fuck you too - you're no different to the GB original with only a couple of extra content.

Damn, dude, what the hell did Mario and that Link’s Awakening Remake ever do to you? Mario games were never meant to have a strong, compelling narrative. That’s what games like Fire Emblem and Xenoblade Chronicles are for. In defense of the Link’s Awakening Remake, video game remakes are supposed to be 1-1 recreations of the original game but with updated graphics and refined mechanics. So it’s natural for there to be a lot of similarities between the remake and original game.
Also, how do your opinions on Mario and Link’s Awakening RE have anything to do with the topic of Switch graphics? Doesn’t seem related to the topic at all.

Ah yes, speaking of Switch graphics, here’s my take on it: The Switch’s graphics are not anything special in comparison to the Xbox One or PS4 (or their successors), but it is possible to make a Switch game have some pretty impressive graphics for the console. Games like Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey,  and Xenoblade Chronicles DE look quite stellar on a system that’s only a bit stronger than an Xbox 360/PS3. Let’s not forget third party titles, either. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Persona 5 Royal, and Dragon Quest 11 are some of the best third party Switch ports that the system has to offer with some pretty good graphics to boot. Now those are just examples of course, but I’d say that remarkable Switch graphics are less a question of “What makes a Switch’s graphics good?” and more a question of “How a Switch’s graphics can be made to look good?”.

My starter for Scarlet was Sprigatito (considered Quaxly at one point but the grass cat had my heart from the moment I saw it). I thought Sprigatito was absolutely adorable which was one of the main reasons why I choose it over the other two. The other reason was that I choose starters purely off of looks because I’m shallow. Plus, Meowscarada is a very cool looking final evolution that just makes the grind worth it.

Favorite new Pokémon? Sprigatito for the reasons mentioned above. But if you want me to tell you which one I liked most that wasn’t a starter, then probably Cyclizar since it’s the Present version of Koraidon (past) and Miraidon (future). I mean, who wouldn’t like a Pokémon that’s related to the cover legendaries?

Favorite character, eh? In terms of gym leaders I’d have to say the streamer that is the gym leader of the Electric Gym. She has a fun personality and seems like someone who could possibly even be friends with you. Plus, she has one of the better gym tests so that’s a plus. Honorable mentions go to the former snowboarder that leads the Ice Gym and Larry, the Normal Gym Leader (who is ironically the only gym leader I can remember off the top of my head despite being as normal as the type itself). The former for being a pretty chill dude (no pun intended) and having certain fan art that made me believe he had a beard under that scarf of his and the latter for being so unremarkably remarkable that I couldn’t forget the guy if I tried. Plus he’s the first Normal Gym leader in the series as far as I know.

If we’re talking in general, then I’d have to say Arven because he just seems to have the most depth of all the characters in Scarlet/Violet. Plus, I love his interactions with the player in the Path of Legends quest line.
As for some of the other notable characters, Nemona’s alright, but “Champion that has an unhealthy amount of interest in you and wants to battle you every chance she gets” weirds me out more than anything. I thought Hop was a far better rival in comparison because: 1. He grows along side you for the duration of the game 2. He has a pretty good character arc in Sword/Shield 3. Bro manages to even get one of the two legendaries at the end of the game.
Director Clavell (AKA Clive) is a pretty cool character and I like how he joins you in Operation Starfall.
Professor Sada (the version exclusive professor I got) is a character I find interesting because I don’t know much about her and I think she has all of the juicy lore bits surrounding Koraidon (or something about the great Paldean Crater). Hope I can go down into that crater myself one day…

Now that I have answered your questions, I would like you to answer them yourself as well. What was your starter for Violet and what are your thoughts on said starter? What’s your favorite Pokémon in S/V and what is/are your favorite character(s) in the game?

P.S. Curse you, Emobot7 for providing the most dignified response that anyone could have given to my terrible attempt at invoking a legendary debate. I suppose it’s really just down to which version someone plays and general preference, but you are right, Koraidon == Miraidon.

  5. Unpopular gaming opinions? Hoo boy! Let’s see here…

Pokémon Sword is the best Pokémon game (Yeah I said it). I mean, there’s dynamaxing, Sword/Shield doggos, those awesome gym stadiums, and the OST is amazing as Pokémon music typically is. Not to mention, Hop is the extramostbestest boy and I like his arc in the game. Definitely one of the best rivals in Pokémon imo. #GalarRegionIsBestRegion

Not sure if this is technically an unpopular opinion, but I find Pokémon Scarlet to be a pretty fun Pokémon game. The large open world, 3 major quest lines, and characters all make Scarlet a pretty enjoyable experience (minus the bugs and performance of course).

I cannot for the life of me get into any Soulsborne kind of game. Just not a fan of that sort of gameplay as it seems too trial and error if you ask me.

Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright is the best of the 3 Fates routes. Better than Conquest story-wise, I am a sucker for routing enemies, and I feel like Revelations is bit of a copout. #Hoshidan4Life

I don’t like Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE/Encore. Now I’m a big fan of Fire Emblem and like me some Personas, but put them together and you get this Persona-esque game that just so happens to have Fire Emblem in it because it’s a crossover. Hyrule/Fire Emblem Warriors was a much better crossover game than this one was in my opinion.

  6. Play through Fire Emblem Engage and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom- From what I’ve seen of Engage and Tears of The Kingdom, they look like they’ll be pretty good, so I decided to preorder both games. Now I’m not sure if they’ll be the god-shattering stars that Three Houses and Breath of the Wild are, but I am optimistic, so hopefully the games surpass my expectations.

Play through Persona 3 Portable & Persona 4 Golden- With Switch ports of P3P and P4G coming soon and having enjoyed Persona 5 Royal beforehand, I would like to play through the games that really defined the Persona series and set the stage for P5R.

Play the Remakes of Dead Space and Resident Evil 4- Never really played through Dead Space (2008) so this remake will be a good chance to play it for the first time. I’ve played through the Xbox One port of Resident Evil 4 (2005) but the RE4 Remake looks really good so far and I enjoyed playing through RE2 and RE3 Remakes, so it’s another game I’ve decided to put on the list.

Finish the Mass Effect trilogy with Mass Effect 3- I’ve beaten Mass Effect 1 & 2 so far and am currently on a playthrough of Mass Effect 3. Would like to finish off the trilogy by this year’s end and maybe play Andromeda out of curiosity (it was only like, 5 bucks at the store I bought it from, so not much money was lost there).

  7. Welcome to the Serenity Forest of all things Serene, ShadyCat! A fellow fan of RPGs, I see… Got a favorite? Mine would have to be Persona 5 Royal. I love the mix of dungeon (or as the game calls them: Palaces) exploration and social life. It just blends together nicely. Best 120 hours I’ve ever spent in an RPG.

Alas, I also have a big backlog of games that I have yet to finish. But I’m slowly chipping away at it so progress is being made!

  8. After playing through 35+ hours of Pokémon Scarlet (the version I played) and nearing completion of the 3 main paths at the time I’m posting this, I have come to formulate my own personal opinion on the game. The big open world, 3 main quest lines, ridable legendaries, and the past/future thing (that I have yet to see for myself, but am looking forward to experiencing) are all great additions to the game and are quite a step up from previous entries. Unfortunately, Scarlet and Violet are plagued by a good number of bugs, glitches, and a general lack of quality that prevents me from making it my favorite Pokémon game in the series. That being said, I have enjoyed playing through Pokémon Scarlet and plan on seeing the game through to its end.

Hopefully Gen 10 takes some of the innovations that Gen 9 has introduced to the main series and improves on it while avoiding the buggier, suckier parts of Scarlet and Violet. But that’s just my take on the newest Pokémon game(s) in the series, what is your honest opinion on Scarlet/Violet?

(Also, don’t at me for this, buuuuuuut… *cough* Koraidon > Miraidon *cough*

  9. So Alear's going to be the avatar character of Fire Emblem Engage. Compared to past avatar characters like Robin, Corrin and Byleth, Alear certainly stands out the most among the lot. That's most likely due to Alear's dual hair colors and heterochromia, which I think looks good together. It certainly looks unique if anything, and goes quite well with Alear's cool-looking outfit. It may have resulted in a plethora of Pepsi-Kun and Colgate-Chan memes, but it is a small price to pay for a character that's not just your average blue or red-haired lord.

It appears that Alear's going to be voiced for both the in-game cutscenes and the more cinematic ones (like Shez in Three Hopes), which I hope is going to be the case considering that a certain Ashen Demon hardly ever spoke up throughout the entirety of Three Houses. Also, it seems that we'll be able to customize the attires of the Engage cast, kind of like how the Three Houses characters could wear different outfits, avatar included. Hopefully this means I'll be able to put M! Alear in a dapper red/blue suit akin to what Vander's wearing in that one Engage screenshot.

Then there's the whole thing where Alear's a divine dragon that has been guarded for about a century. This sounds pretty neat, but I hope that there's more to the whole protagonist being part-dragon thing than just mentioning it once to introduce a new gameplay element and forgetting about it shortly afterwards. I also hope that Alear has a solid personality like Shez, though I may be asking for too much in this regard.

So what are your thoughts on Alear in regards to their design and character? Do you like the mix of red and blue paired up with those beautiful white threads or do you dislike the Pepsi/Colgate drip? Are avatar characters in Fire Emblem still a sight to behold or would you have preferred something else? And last, but not least: What are your hopes for Alear's character in Engage?
