  1. For the sake of map design, starting the player off with roughly the same type of units in every game coming in at roughly the same order makes it easier for the designers to look at past games and then change things around. Which means for the forseeable future will see Lords, paladin/great knight, two cavs, an archer, armor knight, and a foot healer as starting units, with an axe guy, thief and mage shortly after, and then another sword user and someone who flies. That's not going to happen exactly the same in every game (Sacred Stones held off the cav duo for awhile, for instance) but it roughly works out that way. The similarities in the early game are an intentional design choice to ease players into the game. Veterans will know the pattern and just be better prepared in general, but it also slowly dolls out options to new players at a brisk but not overwhelming pace. As for actual character archetypes, some get reused but honestly a lot of comparisons between characters beyond their unit type is pretty forced. Enemy myrmidon with a killing edge who can be recruited is a common occurrence, but the personality and motivation of the characters involved often changes despite the reused mechanic. Everyone talks about the Jagen archetype but the early game paladin's usefulness in the long term fluctuates between each game so people then make subcategories. But as people get better at the games over time and we also get more games, said subcategories don't really hold up very well.
  2. Impa appears at the very beginning of the Oracle games. She's the big lady who helps you out. In a linked game, she's actually there to retrieve the Oracle of Ages/Seasons to bring her to safety on Zelda's behalf. In regards to Twilight Princess, she doesn't appear at all. Impa DOES appear in Wind Waker though... as a cameo on the beautiful stained glass windows in the Master Sword's chamber with the rest of the sages.
  3. One day I am gonna finish my Zero Suit Donkey Kong who I have had on my computer forever if I didn't get sidetracked by Shadowrun and FFXIV. And then Peach + Toad was next on my list, but I do want to do everyone on the cast. I actually get a ton of requests for Captain Falcon but the work is already done for me. He is unbridled sex machine in this game, seriously.
  4. I wear a pin with Zero Suit Jiggs, personally. I'm gonna wear it to PAX! Speaking of PAX, I hope Nintendo is there with the SSB demo so I can get another shot at playing the game. The demo stations are not as busy since it's a 4-day con, at least compared to some things like the Oculus Rift demos. Last year I was able to just walk up and play most of Nintendo's games without even waiting on Sunday. It'll be fun if I can get my friends to play against too instead of strangers, so I won't be completely outclassed as I wrestle with the controls.
  5. Tomorrow Sakurai should show off everyone in Zero Suits. I even designed a bunch of them for him!
  6. A lot of women also worked on Skullgirls as lead animators but people will call it a sexist game anyway since it's filled to the brim with sexy women, jiggling boobs, and panty shots. There's a lot of girls I follow on tumblr who post porn allll the time. It's not a whole women vs men when it comes to tolerance of sexualization. People will argue to the end of time whether or not a character like the fighters in Skullgirls or Bayonetta (also designed by a woman!) are progressive/regressive characters in gaming. And no one can deny that Samus's Zero Suit has become more sexualized over time, but in Smash Bros she's not any more sexual than Sheik or Greninja in terms of posing. Yeah she's broken. So's everyone else. Her poses are kinda wacky and I personally wouldn't have chosen those keys but it isn't a problem because it's sexual, it's a problem because her human anatomy being broken sticks out like a sore thumb unlike if you stretch a character like Yoshi or Mario around. Personally it's a matter of context on whether or not I mind a sexy character. The new ZSS is obviously not posed any differently from her regular suit and it isn't really any more sexual than a skin-tight bodysuit already is. If anything the shape of the clothes makes more sense than the boob clingwrap of her the Zero Suit. I will never like the heels on her, but her heels were super dumb in Other M and I hate them even more. And since this is a Samus based on Other M, it's kind of a step forward... let's just hope that the next Metroid conveniently forgets Other M happened so Samus can go back to being more practical in the next Smash.
  7. The bikini originated from the NES game just as an easter egg. The manual had referred to Samus with male pronouns and it was meant to be a twist ending that Samus was a woman all along. Now it's common knowledge, but there's almost always an end-game bonus for fast completion of the game where you get to see Samus without the suit. Not really contradictory at all but more of a bonus. And of course as time went on, the inner suit became less of a bikini, more into shorts, and is now a full-fledged suit of its own since the character is taken more seriously now. But I mean, with the shorts, I know a lot of girls who just like to unwind after a hard day's work and that's kind of what the Fusion screens remind me of. We'll just ignore Other M being incredibly regressive
  8. ...All this outrage over an outfit you might see on actual women at the gym on a daily basis? Samus could be seen naked in the original SSB if you tried hard enough, in lieu of seeing the skeletons of everyone else when hit by electricity. And that game is E rated! This is an outfit from two of her games, and those games are both E rated as well. So Nintendo and the ESRB both believe this is appropriate for kids. Plus everyone's always been able to get upskirt shots of Peach, Zelda, and now Rosalina and Palutena and that isn't even notable enough for anyone to bring it up at all. Parents are not going to judge the game by a character who isn't even on the box art, let alone the content that's only perverted if you try to make it that way. Like others have said, this is only slightly less clothes than Wii Fit Trainer and less suggestive than her normal Zero Suit.
  9. Samus has been shown safe and sound in her bikini since she appeared on the NES. It's always been an endgame bonus to do well and be treated to a shot of sexy Samus. I think it's kind of a stretch to say they're showing her as a "corpse" when there's been so many instances of her being out of the suit just fine. Actually it'd be kinda cool if they managed to make a no-helmet alt skin for regular Samus, to reference the other possible endings you get throughout the games. But it'd be a lot of work to add in a face when she doesn't have one to work with. Peeling the animation off of ZSS's facial rig is a harder task than it sounds. I don't think it'll be happen but I'll be pleasantly surprised if it does.
  10. I hunted for the picture anyway. More edits: Heck, I will throw in all the bonus scenes from Fusion too.
  11. It's a problem with the way the spine is rigged. It's a really common problem in 3D and really hard to fix with anything less than a feature quality rig. Normally you just avoid bending the spine on video game models too much, but Smash Bros is cartoony and everything is super bendy at all times. Also, this Samus is a rendition of how she looks in the end-game time bonuses in Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission. In case anyone was wondering where the heck this came from. Other than the rocket heels it's a canonical outfit.
  12. I actually like this better than the regular Zero Suit, to be honest. The amount of little detail on her is amazing. And the 3DS version especially looks soooo good. I don't care if it's skimpier, it just looks more like sports gear to me.
  13. It's easy to downscale a high-res cinematic render for an in-game model. But Sakurai himself teased G&W being in anyway. Honestly he's confirmed in my eyes, otherwise I don't see why they would bother to show him off at all in the Pac-man trailer.
  14. I don't think anyone other than Snake and the remainders of the Pokemon Trainer trio will be cut. Snake due to licensing that probably wasn't renewed, and Pokemon Trainer because otherwise we'd suffer a glut of Pokemon on the roster. Squirtle and Ivysaur might reappear as Pokeball mons, though. Wolf plays substantially different from Fox and Falco and is the villain representation of Star Fox, which is as important as having the heroes present. Falco is popular enough that having him cut despite being one of the more subtle "clones" would be a kick in the teeth for people who have mained him for two generations. Even though there will probably never be another Mother game, and while Ness is more iconic than Lucas, I hope they both stay as it is one of Nintendo's most memorable and quirky RPG franchises. But this is probably one of the shakier series to continue to have two reps as the games age. Earthbound has been revisited with new toys this year and a VC rerelease but Mother 3 hasn't received the same kind of TLC. Jigglypuff, despite not being as popular as she once was due to her role in the anime dropping, is still one of the most beloved Pokemon in Japan and has been a three-time vet with a really unique style of play. Plus, she's easy to include, which means the only reason she would be cut is if Gamefreak insists she be cut (I'm of the mind Sakurai would keep everyone if he could). The rest of the cast is irreplaceable. They're in. Game & Watch in particular appeared in the Pac-Man reveal and Sakurai all-but-confirmed he was in the game, so I wouldn't put him in a list of unconfirmed characters since we saw his new render already. Ice Climbers was cited early in development as being a problem character, but considering we've seen Rosalina's Luma mechanics, I feel like they probably sorted out the multi-character issue and that Ice Climbers will be present in the game. Ganondorf and Wario are a huge DUH considering how much WarioWare stuff is in the game and how iconic Ganondorf is for Zelda. ROB... I want to believe he's still in. He doesn't play like anyone else either, plus he represents the saviour of the NES and the uptick of the North American games industry.
  15. The Miis are already a Pilotwings rep. Maybe we'll see some of the Pilotwings reps show up as assist trophies or maybe even just trophies in the gallery, but technically speaking Miis already fit representation of the series due to it taking place on Wuhu Island in the latest installment with Miis as your player character.
  16. There is no female Link in the game. That is a rejected concept. It was just an idea the designers jotted down and then scrapped. No need to get heated about it.
  17. I misread. It says Link no onnanoko aka "female Link".
  18. The scan is blurry but that Link-like girl is named "Linkuru" and is a female gender swap of Link. I reread it a little better.
  19. I don't think Lana will ever be main series. Same goes for Cia and her lackies. They're just OCs for the story framework. Also I do hate the tactic of splitting up costume packs as per order bonuses from different retailers. SMT4 did the same thing, though the costume wasn't as substantial. Hopefully the costumes you don't get will be purchaseable since U hate preordering through Amazon and Best Buy.
  20. I think most of the trophies are not meant to be obtained through feats of skill (those some are), but they are a clever way of illuminating pieces of Nintendo history that might otherwise be overlooked. So yes, their purpose is to look pretty, but also as a way to drum up interest in the other games that make up a Smash Bros game. By not obtaining them all at once, you aren't forcing someone to sit down in a gallery and sift through hundreds of characters in one sitting, but you just check them out as you unlock them. The store is just a good way of removing the random element of unlocking, though there may still be a minigame to obtain trophies cheaply like the Coin Launcher.
  21. Donkey Kong 64 is notorious for having a ridiculous amount of collectable items. The banana fairies in particular are like an insane version of collecting Gold Skulltulas from Ocarina of Time, but so much harder to obtain. You also had to get the Nintendo coins by beating the original Donkey Kong (the arcade game) three times on a single life. I wish I were joking. And Jave has brought up the other collectables like character-coded bananas. Rare made a lot of games that made collecting stars in Mario look like scratching the surface. Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie both have the distinction of also having kleptomania as part of their design DNA. Fart jokes won't bump the rating up to T. Miis in Tomodachi Life just casually fart in their apartments all the time. Plus it's a running gag in the E-rated WarioWare series. Wario's mega fart is safe.
  22. Been working on my blog a whole lot.
  23. Scores are back in SSB4, so we might see the return of bonus battles. I hope so, that was one of my favourite game modes just because the best player didn't necessarily win.
  24. Even as a joke, could you NOT bring up RD Ike all the time? You got your wish in Smash Bros already but seriously, I'm so sick of seeing this anytime Ike comes up. An artist can draw whatever the hell they want. Anyway, on topic, I don't see the problem about hoping for representation of other Zelda games. Of course in a fanservice game people want to see their favourite characters. It's only natural. Same goes for Mario Kart or Smash Bros or even Fire Emblem; people want to see their favourite characters from across the series, and usually want a broad spectrum represented as well. While Wind Waker reps are a long shot based on what the game has gone for so far, Majora's Mask is immediately adjacent to OoT in the timeline so I don't blame people for wanting to see MM characters. It might not happen but the Skull Kid and Tingle and the Happy Mask Salesmen are all a bunch of characters who would be pretty interesting to play as. And then with the large cast of females vs males.... well, most of the supporting allied characters are women. Link's harem is especially strong in OoT. It's only natural that the female cast is lopsided in number.
  25. I did mean Daphnes, it was late at night and I was staring at the red squiggles. But yeah, for more male characters, he could be a consideration, being the King of Hyrule and all that. He's one of the few characters who has even gotten to touch the Triforce on-screen. If Fi and Midna are in, then I kinda want to see the King of Red Lions too. But there is the possibility that everyone from Wind Waker gets omitted just because they'd have to be redesigned to fit the game's aesthetic, unlike OoT, MM, TP, and SS who can be mashed together without as much tweaking to the designs.
