  1. Yeah, O2S is one I have down now but it can be a little tough to find a consistent party to do my clears with. Shinryu is pretty damn hard though! I've made it to the end of part 1 but no further, usually because the tanks miss the last ahk morn after Shinryu's divebomb and get wrecked, and then I get wrecked right after, and it all crashes down from there.

  3. Yeah I'm so bad at the FFXIV platforming. My lalafell friend managed to get all the Kugane sightseeing spots though.

I'm starting to progress on O2S after putting it off but we're kind of walled at 50% from a bunch of silly mistakes. Still, it's not that much more complicated than O1S, just far more punishing damage-wise. It's been awhile since I last felt a bit of panic from a boss's single aoe attack! Compared to all the Lakshimi farming I did beforehand where I was DPSing nearly the entire time, it's certainly a lot to be on top of, especially as my cohealer is a lot less experienced than I am.

  4. Doesn't Alolan Marowak STILL not learn Shadow Bone until you get to the move relearner? Its movepool is a tragedy for in-game use unless something has changed, especially with no more STAB on Bonemerang. I don't really think Alolan Marowak is good at all, and especially if you don't have a Thick Club for it to use.

Salazzle is fast and hits hard, and speed is in short supply in Alola. Dragon rage is also still very potent at the time you can find your first salandit. Her movepool is a little bit of a letdown with little coverage, although she can throw out a fast Taunt or Encore, or just become overwhelmingly powerful with Nasty Plot. I voted for her because she's cool but Arcanine might be slightly more practical, especially if you find an early fire stone.

I had Moon so I've never used Turtonator. Shell Smash sounds good on paper but I think even with the boost its speed is a let down for sweeping. It also comes a bit late. I don't think it's Alolan Marowak levels of disappointment but it also doesn't look super impressive either.

  5. Because you never get kicked out of a stage, it makes the acquisition of a lot of the hidden moons feel "easy". However it does get quite hard to find them all and you will eventually find yourself spending a lot of time in one world. Most worlds transform in subtle ways over time as you play as well. Revisits almost always uncover something new. A few worlds have drastic transformation differences between moons.

I agree the bosses are easy but that has always been the case in a Mario game. At least they aren't as tedious as the Sunshine bosses can be with bad RNG patterns or finicky conditions. The Broodals are more minibosses akin to Boom boom in SMB3 but there are more elaborate bosses akin to the ones seen in Galaxy.

  6. FFXI and FFXIV actually cost the same amount of money for basic accounts, except for that FFXI will not be getting any more expansions. However, FFXIV goes on sale *far* more often. I'd also say that FFXI is much harder to actually "get" into with a somewhat archaic interface and a reliance on Windower to actually bring the UI to modern standards. You'll also probably need to configure a controller as the game isn't really that keyboard friendly. Honestly if I had to pick an FF MMO to get into, XIV is much easier. And honestly FFXIV is the golden standard of MMOs these days, alongside WoW. No loot boxes, no ways of buying your way to the top via cash, and lots of side activities make it one of the most full-featured games I've ever played. While there is a store for extras, it's all cosmetic with no advertising in game to break immersion unlike all F2P MMOs that will constantly tempt you to spend money with cash shop links plastered everywhere.

Ragnarok Online is Free to play and opened up a newish server, which my fiance has been super in to lately. It's an old game and kinda janky control-wise but it has a lot of freedom that most modern games wouldn't give you when it comes to character growth, as you have full control over your stat and skill build. I know some good communities to get in touch with if you'd want to get started here as it can be difficult to get started solo.

It's not really an "MMO" but because you can drop in and out of games relatively easily with other players, I do enjoy Diablo III, especially during seasonal play. It's a buy-once deal with no monthly subscription and I'd call it my side game after FFXIV. Very satisfying to play Adventure mode and do rifts for huge amounts of loot. It's just dumb fun you can play online with friends or strangers with no need to commit a whole lot of time to it.

  7. The downthrow for the hat has been particularly helpful to hit switches below me from off a ledge to make a few timer platforms last that precious second longer that lets me consistently get to the top of a cliff. It also travels along the ground for an extra long distance so for example I can use it to win the slot machine in a single throw.

Also I'd also agree this game is closer to Sunshine, minus booting you out of levels. The levels are roughly a similar size and you spend a lot more time in a few large worlds rather than gathering stars in many tiny worlds like most of Galaxy's levels. Mario's hat techniques and some of his new moves mirror a lot of what he used the FLUDD for in Sunshine. The main game's difficulty is probably closer to Galaxy's though, by giving Mario some of the easier goals to get to a final story confrontation so anyone can complete the game, and with the challenging goals being tucked out of the way (and sometimes finding them is the challenge!) It can kind of feel like railroading until you realize you can completely ignore what the game is telling you to do and go along on your merry way exploring the worlds. If you backtrack, you'll even find some things change after your first visit! There's a real sense of discovery here that makes you feel like the first time you discovered you could change the speed of Tick-Tock Clock in 64 or change the water height in Wet-Dry World by the height of your entry into the painting.

  8. For my birthday I've developed a bit of a thirst to play a randomized Pokemon game, but I'm currently undecided on which one! I have a poll up on Twitter with the three options I'm focusing on: Crystal, Leafgreen, or Platinum. The poll will end sometime around November 6th.

    WHAT WILL BE RANDOMIZED:

-All Pokemon locations, including starters and gifts.

    -Trainer Pokemon teams

    -All movesets

-Most TMs minus moves used in the field (ie Headbutt)

-In gens where this is applicable, Abilities

Base stats and typings will remain the same, to maintain some semblence of structure and applicable game knowledge.

    WHEN IS THE STREAM?

November 17th, probably starting around 9 or 10PM PST. The time will be locked down closer to the date. Hope to see some people there!

  9. 64 also has a lot of choice on how to get 70 stars and has freeform routing so you can focus on platforming stars and skip bosses as often as possible. It's short but intense. Sunshine is mechanically challenging and fairly execution heavy. Odyssey is a bit railroady for main story stars and has built in anti sequence skipping in areas and a lot of bosses. Which doesn't make it a bad game but potentially not a good speed game. I guess we'll see, as most people agree this is the best Mario has ever controlled.

You kidding? I think we're the most pleased with the game so far. Runs at 60FPS, you can skip cutscenes, you don't get booted from the level on death or after every star, and you don't even have to clear all of the "missions" in a level. Odyssey Any% is amazing, and the true heroes will attempt the longer categories. In case you didn't know, Mario 64 and Sunshine are the first and second most ran games of all time

Actually, the speedrunning community loves the way the game plays, but they are struggling to find a category that has a fulfilling length and level of challenge. Obviously 100% is not a plausible category. Just the main game is pretty short and boss fight saturated. I think 502 has been floated around to unlock the ultimate challenge level.

  11. I more or less agree with the sentiment that some other button should have been used to do some of the Cappy maneuvers without motion controls. But the controls for Mario himself are so tight and well executed, and the worlds ooze with charm. I like the idea that seeing the end of the game is easy, but finishing every moon is going to be hard as hell. It really is a game out to please everyone (except speedrunners, RIP in pieces guys).

I haven't cleared the game so far although I did spoil some of the worlds by watching some of my favourite streamers. My two favourites so far though have been Woodland and Metro. Lake Lamode was quite beautiful and original as far as water worlds go too. This game manages to be both familiar and spins things on their heads all the time, I love it.

  12. Good stuff on the housing btw! The Shirogane wards are pretty detailed and have a lot of extra hidey-holes to them. I stayed with Mist, although it's a bit funny how they really just enabled people to swim in the water but added nothing else. Unless I do the Savage arc + stump trick my plot doesn't have roof access anymore though.

I'm currently trying to make it up the Shiokaze Holstery tower but I've only made it halfway before my fingers hurt. Mario Odyssey is kind of helping me with my platforming skills but the jank geometry and my large elezen self don't make it easy to judge whether or not I'm colliding with awkward hitboxes...

  13. I can't believe how many people are salty over the Rabanastre gear! It's all Tactics based and yet people seem to be hating on it. I got the caster chestpiece this week and it's pretty nice.

Also yeah, Omega is a nice step 1 for new players coming into the expansion. If you can beat Susano you can definitely clear O1S, as they are similar difficulty. My friend thinks O2S is even easier than 1 but I dunno about that one.

I managed to snag a medium estate for my FC. Everyone else survive the housingpocalypse OK?

  14.

    October 10th!

I also managed to clear Omega 1 Savage with my friends! It was a hard fought win during the boss's enrage cast. Our dps was fairly mediocre with one exception and we had 10 deaths, but we did it. It actually took fewer attempts than Susano and I got a tank neck piece out of it.

  15. I really like how the new design of bard really integrates their songs into their rotation, compared to how it used to be foe's requiem and nothing else and how terribly clunky wanderer's minuet used to be as a stance. Good times. I'm currently trying to level black mage but the loss of old sound cues and the enochian buff icon has made things surprisingly difficult as I can't identify when I'm accidentally using the wrong skill anymore! I may need to change my button groupings to not accidentally bump ice spells in the wrong stance anymore, or something. I hope 4.1 at least brings back sound cues for when I *drop* a stance, since I got used to red mage having great audio and visual queues for when my bars were charging and it felt so natural.

And yeah, crafting is pretty hard to start until everything gets to 50 and you have a huge stable and cross class abilities. It's great at max level and Stormblood has made things more engaging and fun on that end than ever but it's a huge hurdle to even get started.

I did some Susano farming as well and got the dog on my 3rd successful run. Kind of incredible! I ran into an amazing samurai player who was party leader and super chill and was fantastic overall. I surprised myself with some good optimized healing and damage dealing too. They were even from my server so I hit em up on the friends list. Pretty rad.

  16. Yeah I think most jobs are in a pretty good place. Even summoner and machinist are only a little behind black mage/bard, with most complaints bring not about numbers but about the feel of how they play. Devotion for sure needs a rework and thr backend AI of pets certainly needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Machinists could get their old heat values back to bring Cooldown back into use. Even dragoon is coming back into favour as they realize an extremely good bard and machinist can top the dps charts thanks to their incredible uptime on bosses.

I have a soft spot for crafting/gathering. I actually finished my 2 star melds as of late so I can dive into production of 320 gear and endgame raid foods if I wanted.

  17. They did make positionals less punishing but I was under the impression that heavy thrust, fang and claw and wheeling thrust are just straight up buffs. This should bring dragoon above ninja but remain in line with the idea that dragoons are on the more supportive side of the melee spectrum still. It isn't a huge buff but dragoons and ninjas were also close in personal damage in Heavensward, and dragoon was a meta shoe-in anyway.

Edit: ok, it really is just a buff to missed positional potencies. However the current raid tier has a lot of situations where you must remain still and potentially miss a positional so this is still a buff.

Also I get the feeling monk adjustments will occur in 4.1 or not at all, as monks have been doing very well in the current raid tier with Brotherhood and Mantra. Their damage is great, but Tackle Mastery and Riddle of Earth are somewhat meaningless compared to what people expected. I'd like to see a greased lightning refresh that doesn't reply on getting hit first!

  18. Yeah, it's probably my favourite game right now. Since the level cap has increased and there's new gathering/crafting things to do, it's a good way to make a boatload of gil. When Heavensward launched I had my lucis tools for gatherers and melded gear before even having decent gear for my main combat class, so I'm pretty in to the side stuff.

  19. I'm also on Primal, on Behemoth, and the Raubahn EX pain and salt was real! It was pretty bad, so I ended up leveling my gatherers during early access instead of running instances. But after that first weekend it cleared up and queues were very stable even on a higher population server like Behemoth.

I have a level 70 WHM, 70 in gatherers, 70 BSM and nearing that for the rest of my crafters. I'm also working on getting my PLD to 70 as well.

Ike's sudden departure brings to mind Link, doesn't he just leave at the end of Twilight Princess? Maybe it was a phase Nintendo's writers were going through at the time. A phase which suddenly reoccured for the children characters in Awakening and Fates.

Ike's ending is actually pretty unique for an FE lord. Most MCs in FE when the game is over settle down and rule a country/the world Only Rath/unmarried!Lyn of all the other lords has deviated from a path of ruling when the dust is settled (Eirika doesn't reign unless married, but she continues to exercise her royal power as a princess regardless). The only difference between Ike and Lyn is that Lyn stays in Elibe and has a known location. And Lyn can do this in part because she isn't famous world over- the events of FE7 are known to few in Elibe.

Yeah, I agree. While "He leaves forever" is common in games outside of FE, it was never common within it. However with Ike being a commoner and the ultimate enemy of the people being a goddess who was revered by most of the people on the continent, the resolution of the game is a much different tone. For heroes like Marth, becoming king and leading his people after defeating the evil dragon is a logical conclusion. But in Tellius, the ones who must rise up to lead are people other than Ike, and if Ike is around, his existence interferes with their ability to be leaders. In PoR, Ike was a proxy warrior for Elincia specifically and the concern was that Gallia and Begnion would interfere with Crimean affairs. He was able to still live a life as a popular mercenary but ultimately Begnion was given control of Daein for their role in the war, and the abuse of the Daein people caused many of them to despise Ike. In RD, Ike is now the figurehead for the survival of all of humanity and redeems the beorc, the laguz, and even the Branded in the eyes of the goddess.
