  1. You know, I've thought about it and I think I'm going to try it. The tutorial on the Mother 3 translation blog actually explained it pretty well. On another note, I have all of the character names in the rom, so it shouldn't be long before they're done. BUT I somehow messed up the pointers so now almost every enemy unit has the wrong name :( (but at least all of the players units are correct) I guess I'll have a lot of work to do with that. Also, could someone tell me which units cause the game to crash when you hover the cursor over them in the Shaya patch?
  2. Yeah, that's what it is. Sadly I don't know any ASM tricks, so for now a vwf is out of question. It will take long to do this, but I think it'll be worth it. Also, work on this won't start until I get the rest of the rest of the menus translated (I'll be using Resire to edit the actual script; thinking about editing the script by hand in a hex editor is scary :D) Yes, I'll probably see if I can get someone who's good in this area to make the letters, all I did was make the regular font thinner.
  3. Alright, so I was thinking something like this for weapon names- Also this is not the final version. The letters could still use work. (And I know AxeFghtr looks terrible; that's just a placeholder until I get the full name inserted) The reason I'm doing this is because when fan translations only say what the weapon is made out of you can really tell you're playing something fanmade. The official NoA translations would never do that. If have any suggestions, please post them!
  4. Nice to know that development is moving steadily. Like what Celice said before, many people will be grateful for this. This will most likely result in a lot more fan hacks made for FE4 and 5. Probably the reason the GBA games are so popular for fan hacks is because there are tools like FEditor that make hacking easy.
  5. Yes, but the hacking part is solved, so I really don't do anything with it anymore because the only thing left to do is translate. That's why I took up this project. Ah, okay. That makes a lot more sense. That is unfortunate though that Firelizard's translation omits some dialogue. Although we're probably out of luck there because I don't think anyone is going to want to retranslate a script of FE5's size just to look for lines that were left out
  6. I noticed above that the patch link isn't working anymore. I have the last one Gharnef released before he left, so if anyone wants it let me know and I'll upload it.
  7. Great news! This will surely speed up the translation! (And also nice to hear that the pointer offsets I gave you worked!) So let me get this straight- Resire will dump a script, which you can then edit, and then insert it back into the game? I've just been a little confused about what it actually does. Also guys, I think that this topic is quickly escalating in to a big argument. If you don't think gringe is a good translator, or that you just don't like fan translations, that's fine, you're entitled to your opinion. But if you don't like how we're doing this, then please refrain from posting about it. All this does is derail the thread and take up space.
  8. I need dialogue. I can probably figure out the menu pointers, but if you know about them then that'd be great!
  9. Hey guys, as some of you know, I'm working on an update to the FE5 translation patch- http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=40124 I'm trying to find the pointer tables for the text, but with no success. I'm a noob when it comes to SNES hacking, and there's not many documents covering this topic out there. Could someone either tell me the offsets of them or point me in the right direction to find them?
  10. Could you tell me what the control code is? Thanks for telling me about it, it should make things easier.
  11. Heh, well this is my second romhacking project but my first for the SNES, so I guess we're in the same boat here :). As for writing a tool, that'd be great! I'm still figuring out the pointers tables and whatnot but as soon as I have it I'll send it to you (my first project was for the DS so...yeah quite a difference in difficulty). As for the official names, yes I agree with bookofholsety- they are the official names whether we like it or not. Even I don't agree with all of them, but these are what we are using. It is possible that I might create a patch after this one (that's a long way off so don't get excited :P) that uses the most common fan names, but right now the priority is official names.
  12. Heh, well, while I did talk to gringe about him or bookofholsety "localizing" the script, that's pretty far off right now. Right now I'm going to see if I can write a text dumper/inserter for the game, which requires me making a table to figure out what value=what letter/symbol. Since I'm translating from scratch with the original Japanese ROM, I need to make a table for that (previously my patch was based off of Shaya's so I had a table for that). And I have very little knowledge of Japanese so writing the kanji will be difficult. Then there's the compressed menu text. I do have a decompressor for those, but the main problem is finding out where they are located. So yeah, right now rewriting the script isn't even on my mind :) (gringe also said that they're working on the new FE4 translation too, so you'll have to wait for that to be done anyways :P) Edit- Wow I just started playing Path of Radiance for the first time about a week ago... I never realized Serenes Forest is actually a place in Fire Emblem :)
  13. So you enter the pointer to the offset you want to repoint it to and add $01 after it?
  14. Yeah, I think I'm going with 'Ward'. As for the Ridersbane/Horseslayer thing, no I haven't corrected that in my lastest patch, but I'm not sure if the Shaya patch does. I actually lost all my notes for the translation, the patch in the first post is the only thing I have left. So I I'm now starting from scratch (with an original Japanese rom, not the Shaya one). Yeah, I'm helping gringe with some graphics for FE6 (oops I mean 7 :D ). We have discussed either you or him providing a new translation (I actually have a pm from him now I have to read).I'm also going to ask in the romhacking forum, but does anyone know the control code that let's you repoint the text in the dialogue? I forgot about it since I lost my documentation but someone in the romhacking forum reminded me about it.
  15. Regular ROM (Not the Nintendo power one), headered
  16. What about the pointers? The English is going to be longer than the Japanese so I need more space.
  17. Um... If you're asking if the text is compressed, most of it isn't. I believe the only text that is compressed is the things in the stats screen (e.g. Attack, Defense, Luck etc)
  18. Can anyone tell me what this program does? http://asvel.ys168.com/note/fd.htm?http://ys-C.ys168.com/2.0/247720307/V65Uuwh4L5J2K6H5JIPscx/%B6%E0%C0%AD%BB%F9%D1%C7776%D0%DE%B8%C4%C6%F7%20ver1.5.rar
  19. Does anyone know if the FEBinary contains a text editor for FE5? I'm working on a translation and I really don't want to have to make one if there's already one available. This file seems to be a collection of tools for FE4 and FE5, but I can't read it because it's in Japanese (or maybe Chinese, I really have no idea )
  20. Hey guys, I just wanted you to know that I *am* working on this still. I've started over so the glitches caused by my older patch won't happen.
  21. Yeah there was voice acted dialogue but there is also text dialogue as well. http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showuser=780
  22. So does anyone know if there is a translation patch for the BSFE roms? (Obviously only for the text)
