  1. New demo..?

Just what I needed to get back into this! I sorta lost motivation at the mid point last time when all of my units got RNG screwed. Uther was a wall of red stats at level 10, and when you need effective weapons to do more than a few points of damage, you know something's gone horribly wrong. Seriously, the only (slightly) green stats on my party were defence on Madelyn and luck on Toni. Everything else was either orange or bright red, which kinda kills enthusiasm when you need four characters to kill one target.

Time to start over! Maybe this time I can actually see where the story goes...

(Anna, try that garbage on me again and I'm boycotting your store.)

  2. I don't exactly work out in the gym (preferring to get my exercise in the great outdoors), but there's quite a few different styles of music here so I've got a few suggestions to add on.

First, pretty much anything that shows up on this YT channel:

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3zwjSYv4k5HKGXCHMpjVRg

...Particularly the selection in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU7SGn0MeP0&list=PL4adbQCQMmoat1N7v0v8sja4nd0RoRGNX&index=3

A bit more traditional, there's the version of Chariots of Fire performed by the London Symphony Orchestra during the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB0L89zZqog

(And if you like Mr. Bean, this is how it originally showed up on screen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwzjlmBLfrQ. Heck, even if you think his antics are too over the top as I generally do, it's still worth a watch!)

If you work out to military style tracks, then the Ace Combat OSTs have a heck of a lot of good tunes. Here's a couple that sound like they might work for the gym:

    Ace Combat 5 - Four Horsemen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfcGsiD1QcA

Ace Combat Assault Horizon - White Devil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLqhF2wswYk

Ace Combat 6 - Liberation of Gracemeria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhdNjzX4waA (Not so sure about this one, but it's one of the best tracks in the series and it gets very inspiring later on).

One of my favourite internet musicians would be Gavin Dunne, otherwise going by the handle Miracle of Sound. His songs are mostly (but not entirely) inspired by games or movies, he does a good variety of styles, and most of it's worth listening to. For the purposes of working out though, here's a couple with good beats:

London Town (Inspired by Assassin's Creed Syndicate): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6hF3EaICxk

Breaking Down the Borders (Inspired by Borderlands 2): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81aQuoM_Y90

    His Father's Son (Inspired by Assassin's Creed 3): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbkBEWh5PIs

I'd recommend others by him like Nord Mead, or Beneath the Black Flag, but those don't really have the regular rhythm I'd expect you to need in the gym.

  3. The problem with trying for an alternative stat booster is the first time player is going to have no idea it exists unless they, like me, take a peek at the chapter objectives and see that talking is an option, and take it. And even then, not everyone is going to realise the difference until it gets pointed out to them. It's a difference sure, but it's not necessarily an advantage; you're just reshuffling bonus stat increase from one to another ("do you want more defense or more e.g. strength?"), and you're still giving up on the boss exp.

Perhaps alternatively you could give Kane a slightly different starting weapon set for talking to him? An early killer weapon might make for a reasonable compromise for the loss of exp. and the comparatively awkward task of triggering the talk. I'm not saying you give up on the stat booster; just have him join with the dracoshield (or whatever) in his inventory.

(I was going to suggest that Kane delay his recruitment for a chapter because Val kicked him around too much, but the boss exp. and stat booster aren't worth that handicap.)

  4. Nice! I particularly like the jellyfish critters.

...But what I'm most interested in, is that tileset towards the end. Those look like clumps of kelp and coral, and the general colour makes me think... submerged ruins? Covered with a temporary bubble of air to explain how the non-aquatic Djuron can be fighting down there?

Well whatever it is, that would be what I'm most looking forward to learning about in the next patch.

  5. It's actually 16 tracks 12 notes.

Wait, what? I thought that FE7/FE8 hack you and Brendor came up with "only" expanded it to 12 tracks, 11 notes at a time? If it's really 16 tracks...

(Starts rummaging back through the rejected midi bin.)

  6. That's a pretty good sounding SRW track. Better than in OG2... did you rip midis from Endless Frontier and trim 'em by any chance?

On a related note, are you using that 12 midi track hack Agro and Brendor came up with? I know the FE7 one works fine, but as for FE8, no idea. Last I heard you were the preferred guinea pig!

  7. Obvious solution is to cut max support partners down to six. :P:

Still, that looks nifty. I'd love to see just how ridiculous the support boosts will get!

The problem with that is that the RWBY main main character list essentially consists of an A team (Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang) and a B team (Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha and Ren). Those two teams are very heavily interlinked, to the point that it would be difficult to pick which pairings to cut. It gets even more complicated with obvious relationships/friendships that stretch outside the main 8; Blake is getting plenty of ship tease with Sun, Yang and Neptune are getting along fine, Weiss has her older sister Winter about to show up (although I don't expect her to be fully on the side of good, so she might not need Supports), Ruby and Yang have uncle Quan, Ruby and Penny seem to have a full on friendship underway, Yang's mother Raven is just popping up and looks to be more friend than foe... you get the picture.

    [spoiler=A few ideas...]

If you were to cut them down to six per character, the only ones that absolutely have to exist are all of the team RWBY to Team RWBY connections, Pyrrha and Jaune (and Jaune had better start noticing her interest!), Blake and Sun, and Nora and Ren. Ren's not the most talkative, so he probably doesn't need many other support options. I'm not yet sure if Yang and Neptune is going anywhere serious. Jaune's obsession with Weiss could be another option for him, and Ruby has good "both teamleaders" rapport going with him.

Ruby's actually the biggest problem with Supports because of the sheer number of people she gets along well with. But at present for her, Weiss, Blake, Yang, Jaune and Penny seem to be the most important. At least until Qrow shows up.

Anyway, about the demo. I quite enjoyed it, even if the standard arena map isn't all that representative of Beacon's canteen. The CG of RWBY looked a little jagged, but not too bad for cramming a massive screenshot into a dinky little GBA screen. The custom animations were all nice, and I was pleasantly surprised to get all of RWBY's crit's in one run (but not Pyrrha's. So as far as I'm aware, it could just be a reskinned Halberdier crit.). Hopefully you're planning Nora's crazy hammer/RPG thing at some point; she just doesn't seem right using magic.

RWBY music works pretty well in midi form! Hope the rest of the music list in the OP turns up in the next patch.

One gameplay quibble; I couldn't get any triangle attacks to work, even when it was the start of my turn and all of my gals had Pyrrha boxed in. No matter who I moved first, no sign of a triangle attack. Who exactly is needed for it? I got a few lucky crits and managed to do a no losses run, but Nora and Pyrrha could easily have ended someone with one lucky crit (and did on a couple of attempts).

Looking forward to the first actual story release!

  8. Listen, I wanna apologize for being so slow again. Things... haven't been well IRL. I've been struggling financially and mentally.

I dunno if people are okay with me revealing the details, but I feel like I should at least say SOMETHING so people don't think I've just disappeared or something.

    Sorry again...

Some of us may be a cynical bunch (me often included), but...

Don't worry about it. It's not been months since your last activity, so it's hardly got to the point where deliberate avoidance is the only plausible possibility outside of death/local internet implosion at your address. Short term absences will pretty much always be attributed to RL factors out of your control; we're reasonable here in the forest.

  9. I remember using the most recent patch at this point (1.3), and triggering both Meredith and Katerina's extra scenes without a problem. Granted the save file had been started on 1.0 and updated as each new patch came out, with the jump to 1.3 occurring about Ch. 16, but I don't see how that could have made a difference.

Faulty patching experience perhaps? Even NUPS fails sometimes; I remember when I used it to patch Midnight Sun's first public release, and ended up with every enemy in the game having health points in the seventies, and being of the wrong classes (monsters became great lords and falco knights for example). Tried again using the android multi patcher, the same ROM and the same patch, and everything worked fine. So did NUPS the second time round. An extreme example, but it could be something similar.

Or it could be the particular emulator. Compare Gameboid and Myboy on Android. Try playing Skitty's most recent Fractured Realms on both; on Myboy it works fine throughout, on Gameboid it will guaranteed freeze whenever someone enters a battle that will cause them to level up. In a similar fashion, many pokemon hacks can't use in-game saves and occaisionally suffer glitchy graphics with gameboid, but work fine on Myboy. I still use gameboid where I can because it's a bit more user friendly.

Basically, it's not always a problem with the patch. Sometimes certain emulators just don't like a particular hack. Maybe start asking which emulator someone is using when they encounter a freeze? You might see a pattern.

(Oh, and gameboid got all the way through Requiem without a problem.)

  10. I thought player unit specific battle themes weren't possible in FE... at least according to Blazer's Ultimate Tutorial, which is admittedly rather old at this point. When did that change? I'd be interested to know how it was done for future reference (probably some fancy ASM that will be way above my level)...

Music sounds pretty good, even if Xehanort and Fa are complete opposites. Shiori's theme sounds familiar, but I can't quite place it...

  11. I'm keeping a notepad file to try and keep track of everything. But what would really help would be a world map, so we can better visualise things rather than just have a set of names and nowhere to really reference them to (beyond what we've managed to pick up in cut scenes. I remember things better when I can link traits to a visual location). I'm not saying to smash the FE8 rom to pieces trying to incorporate one; a quick paint job in the OP would suffice.

Apologies if one exists and I'm just being thick, but I can't find one anywhere.

  12. So, this project will be finished in December, 2015. farewell, social life nngh

    Final beta release.

Until then, we'll work in the shadows so get hyped and be surprised to see the new contents!

If you want to contribute to our motivation somehow, you can donate with the following link:

    donate.png

This won't serve to make the game come out any earlier: it WILL be released anyway. It's just a token of appreciation for the work that is being made for this fan project.

Other than that, see you with the final release!

Whoah whoah whoah, don't work yourself into the ground! Obviously I have no idea how much progress you've made over the last few months, but if the hack length goal remains at roughly comparable to FE8's length, that much by 31st December might be putting too much strain on you...

  13. I'm only on Ch. 6, but I've just done a little investigation (no screenshots I'm afraid, I can't get onto Photobucket ATM).

Of Evan and Jenna's stats, Jenna currently beats Evan in every department but speed and res. Her DPH is still substantially lower than Evan, which I've concluded to be spell related - her starting spells are pitiful in strength by comparison to Evan's starting spells. One of them (lightning?) is might 1, the other (wind?) might 0 (and while it probably has effectiveness against fliers, there's been precious few of those since she joined so far), so it's no wonder she seems weak when Evan has might 3 spells to chuck around.

I've picked up another Thunder tome, so once Jenna's out of her cell I'll see if her DPH has improved.

However, given how often Evan's boosted crit. results in a ORKO for me, I'd say another part of the problem isn't that Jenna's weak, it's just that Evan's crit. boost and stronger spells make him too strong. He just makes her look bad by comparison - in fact bar Relina and her Adept skill, he typically does the work of two (sometimes three) other characters (unless "effective against X" weapons are in the mix). I get that his high crit. is plot related, but that might be unsettling the party balance too far in his favour.

Of course, I'm only on Ch. 6; things might change. I'll keep Jenna going and see what happens.

  14. My main gripe with that "position on emulation gunk" was the directly stated implication that even if you spoke the language, you missed FE1 to 6? Well tough potatoes.

No offense Nintendo, but people will on finding a franchise that they like, look back along it. Very few are going to be satisfied sticking to just what is still being sold directly by them. Not to mention those popular franchises that have quietly sauntered off into oblivion for no apparent reason, i.e. Advance Wars. Are we supposed to just forget about them, Nintendo?

I've said my piece on the topic and will henceforth button up about it (I don't want to divert Marc's thread any further). But know this Nintendo; pretending that older entries in a franchise are insignificant to today's players, even those newcomers just joining in, pretending that only the franchise itself matters, is a recipe for contempt aimed squarely at you.

  15. This was a good argument in the pre-Wii days, but it means nothing now that the Virtual Console exists and Nintendo once again sells their most popular old games (which are more likely to be modded) as new.

Okay, then I withdraw that point. I don't get why they've rereleased them on Wii/Wii-U (which I don't have, so I didn't know) but not on 3DS though (not counting that limited run ambassador thing which I missed by a couple of years, and I have never seen GBA games, FE or otherwise, show up in the European 3DS Nintendo store. I've looked repeatedly.) I don't even want to know how pixelly GBA FE would look on a widescreen telly. I mean, seen how an original PSX game looks when played through a PS3 on a modern telly? It ain't a pretty sight folks!

Luckily, I still have a firsthand physical GBA and firsthand DS-lite (admittedly with rather worn out buttons), and firsthand cartridges of both FE7 and FE8. I don't need an emulator or virtual console. Heck, my Gameboy Colour and Gameboy Pocket are still kicking around, still serviceable! Emulators; only used for hacks and translations.

I can't actually see the article on my internet but are you sure that isn't from like 2013? I could swear I saw that exact article in 2013. And then nintendo had all that backlash and stopped with their crap.

...And so history repeats itself, and Nintendo quietly pitches the topic back into the cooler for another couple of years.
