Fire Emblem: Dark Stone - FE8, but you play as the bad guys! [Overhaul with a new story]

Hello! It's me, Saint Rubenio. You might remember me as the guy that made the FE6 Bad Guys hack, Eckesachs. Despite FE6 being a headache and a half to hack, I had a lot of fun with that little project, and quickly began to feel the craving for more bad guys. Thus, I turned to Sacred Stones, the game with my favorite roster of villains in the series.

FE8 being a much better game to hack than FE6, I also set out to make a bigger overhaul than Eckesachs, tweaking all aspects of gameplay to try and bring about a more intense experience than vanilla FE8 had to offer.

Ever wondered what would've happened if Lyon had been more proactive in his quest to destroy the Sacred Stones and didn't just leave everything to his father and the generals? Wonder no further.

Features:

  • Every playable character in the hack is a boss. Hurray.

  • ...Well, sorta. To avoid having a tiny cast of like 24 playables, NPCs and monsters have been thrown into the mix, as well as background characters brought to life. In total, the roster comes up to 47 playable characters.

905b4ddacd3d6b9e0f61666092d508e15097c2dfab5e8cae2ded6ae8cfb1cf1ebc5e5f7a9fca459196eb07ca78ac97a08997a8fbc438691ebc471cdfb7b43debd1b9c50e954fbabc853529ce28160d36

  • Naturally, with the bad guys on your side, it's to be expected that you should now **face all your favorite playables from FE8**. Unlike last time, not a single one of them will escape unscathed. You'll meet all of them on the battlefield, as well as a few NPCs where they fit.

496927943c2bbe16d4ccd7b6eefef96995c1b1f70071176594b915fd6a656daa049cb1bdf12769e3130283f5d4a0776d66564c5f1904943ec65d6f1fd752c7dea2f8ad6b59b2533261e935d321b2813b

  • 32 chapters of heavily overhauled Sacred Stones gameplay. Weapon stats, mechanics, fog (it's gone), enemy formations and stats, merged routes, recontextualized maps... Pretty much every aspect of the game is touched up. I'd say it's about as heavy as an overhaul can be!

  • Fully rewritten story. Follow Lyon as he leads his father's legions in the conquest of Magvel, and watch as his heart grows colder and the darkness inside it stronger. Expect twists, turns, tragedy and occasional bits of comedy.

  • For the secondary roster, instead of your classic support conversations, sprinkled throughout the game are special conversations that characters can get. These can grant support levels, stat gains, items, nothing at all and more! Keep an eye out for them.

  • If you feel like you still want more after the campaign, Lagdou Ruins and the Creature Campaign mode have been repurposed into a fully-fledged postgame dungeon. Ever played the Valkyrie Profile series? This is basically the Seraphic Gate - a silly place full of meta humor and memes where anything goes.

  • I didn't make any lords go insane/angsty/edgy this time around. I promise. Also Roy is in this hack!

Apply patch to a vanilla US FE8 ROM.

The contents of the ZIP file are as follows:

  • Two patches. The standard one has all UI colors swapped from blue to red and viceversa for flavor (you are playing as the bad guys, after all). However, I know a lot of people hate when hacks do that, as it can be difficult to get rid of the “blue good, red bad” muscle memory from regular FE.
Therefore, for those of you who prefer convenience over flavor, I’ve also included an alternate version of the patch that maintains vanilla’s overworld sprite palettes and battle forecast colors.
  • The guide. An excel file containing all unit information, recruitments and a list of all special conversations in the game. Also, for curiosity's sake, there's a section with all the origins of the background characters turned playable. Just to prove that they're not complete OCs - just mostly.
  • Readme. Basically just this section and the three sections below, but in a text file.

Known issues and things to note:

  • If you promote too many units to distinct classes, the prepscreen will start to glitch out at the bottom. I'm not sure exactly how many different classes you can have before the glitch appears, but it's possible to finish the main campaign without encountering it. Either way, it's a merely visual issue, so I would recommend not letting it worry you too much.
  • Fog of war has been removed from the hack. However, I do not know how to remove the random chance of fog from skirmishes, so you might still encounter fog in those. If anyone knows how I could go about removing it there as well, I'm all ears. This has been fixed, thanks to Jotari for helping out with that!
  • The main campaign has been exhaustively playtested and the postgame has also gotten a decent amount of testing. Skirmishes have been looked at by one tester, and I'm pretty sure the Tower of Valni is mostly uncharted territory.
That being said, there's always stuff that slips through the cracks, so please keep an eye out for any possible problems (especially if you try going through the Tower) and do not hesitate to give me a shout if you encounter anything that seems out of the ordinary!

Special thanks:
Dr Shaky Jones, whose keen mind for numbers and map design was a huge help in fine-tuning many aspects of the hack.
Pengaius, for doing two playest runs for the price of one, plus a run of the postgame. And for pushing me to buff Zabba. She deserves it.
Jotari, for playtesting and for giving me a number of cool ideas for the hack, chief among them the playable pupil.
ReedRacer, for playtesting of both the campaign and the postgame and proofreading.
Tsunny, Tru, Res and Mibbles for additional playtesting and suggestions.

Parrhesia, Retina, Contro and SubwayBossEmmett for helping me with a number of hacking-related issues I had.
7743 for creating FEBuilder and making it that much simpler to make things like this.
The talented artists and computer wizards in the community, as credited below, for all the free stuff I used in this hack.

Hmmm. I challenge the accuracy of the statement. I don't think we ever have a boss Bone Walker or Mauthe Doog....in addition to the more obvious OC and send OC characters featured in the game.

Anyhow everyone have fun with this one. I would but if i see FE8 again i'm going to scream. Happy hunting.

I fought a foggy skirmish while play testing. Sacrificed a full legion of Phantoms to the fog to draw in enemies.

You walked in the fog so everyone else could run in the, not-fog. My regards.

Wish I'd known it was that easy. I took a cursory look at the skirmish event, saw all the garbled nonsense and thought "well better not touch that."

I assume you didn't make him go through another map with infinite hordes of reinforcements, considering there have been no news of Spain being nuked.

And I did not expect myself to have a backlog of Fire Emblem Hacks In Which You Play The Bad Guys, but here we are. Still, I must first ask: Can you pet the Mauthe Doog?

Playing a Fire Emblem game from the villain's perspective is always a treat I love seeing, it almost feels like a DLC story. Hopefully more FE modders make more stuff like this.

  • Fixed phantoms being able to talk to the spy on chapter 11.

I also made one for FE6 if you want to see more. It's a much smaller and in ways clunkier hack but hey, it exists!

v1.3 released!

  • Fixed phantoms being able to obtain desert treasure.
  • Updated a few in-map vendors throughout the game to sell dark tomes. I updated the worldmap vendors but neglected the ones in the map. Yeah, they’re different.
  • The mauthe doog now gets petted in a cutscene. This is very important.

There's a certain subplot that I was told flows better if that house doesn't exist. Thinking about it I agreed, so the house got the tactical nuke.

Obscure characters were my lifeline. Without them this hack would've had 24 characters and exactly 1 girl.

Pablo has a semi-important role in the Carcino chapters. I did toy with the idea of making Klimt recruitable if Pablo dies, but I decided I had enough "good guys forced into helping the bad guys" as it was and enough bishops.

That could actually be a lot fun. Tear Ring Saga does have some cool bosses. Has anyone tried to remake it entirely in Sacred Stones yet?

At this point you're probably done with the game and just want to fix minor issues, but as someone who actually did lose Pablo, I think getting Klimt instead could work. The way you characterized him he wasn't exactly a good guy, as he basically did the exact same thing Pablo did in vanilla.

Yeah, makes sense

After playing till ch8, here are some gameplay related stuff.

Just a nitpick but, I.. dont think they should be this happy seeing a monster without a proper explanation first. Same with zonta and zabba in the previous chapter.

Also, i feel garcia arrives about 1 turn too early in ch6. Especially if you sent your B team after the boss and main team towards south, like me. I had to dodge tank with axereaver saar for 2 turns and rush the boss with rescue dropping caellach.

Ch5x is also pretty rough in this regard. Idk if orson retreats but he has high chance of dying before you can save him. Well, i am playing on hard, so it might be bit more reasonable in normal.

Idk if its included later, but i was hoping to see valter's cursed lance.

As for the units, so far my mvp is surprisingly bazba. He is on of my tankiest unit just behind the natural tanks like knights, aias and djieien. While being one of the strongest and fastest unit as well.

Lyon is a pretty cool lord as well, a bit glass cannon but thats fine since he 1 rounds most enemies.

That's not a turn spawn, but rather an area spawn. When one of your units steps in an area near'ish the boss, he retreats, and the next player phase Garcia spawns. Mainly I just wanted to avoid Knoll being fightable, and have a nice little jumpscare with Garcia, but I can see how that could be rather troublesome if you were just holding your ground at the edge of the area.

Ch5x is also pretty rough in this regard. Idk if orson retreats but he has high chance of dying before you can save him. Well, i am playing on hard, so it might be bit more reasonable in normal.

I've gotten a number of complaints about 5x and... Imma level with you - I thought the chapter was if anything kinda easy and none of my testers said anything about 5x being particularly bad, so I have no idea how to go about "fixing" it. Someone said to cut down on the reinforcements coming from the stairwell after turn 6, and I made a few adjustments in 1.4 based on that. Were you playing on that patch?

Ahh, yeah thats what happened. I wanted to beat the wyvern reinforcements before they reached my low health units, which triggered knoll leaving.

Huh.. yeah im playing 1.4, so you are saying i am playing the easier version? Then it might have been a positioning issue on my part or the fact that it was my first run on the map. Main issue i had was actually from the cavaliers and shaman from top. Currently playing ch9, and i would say 5x was still the toughest map i played till now. Easiest was ch8, but that might be because i abused the arena a little to give 1-2 levels to everyone.

It's weirdly validating to hear that a bunch of people are struggling with 5x. I always see myself as someone bad at the game so it's nice to have cleanly beaten something that others are struggling with.

Honestly I can see why elitism took off with how good it feels to be """"superior"""" to other players. Make the map harder Ruben. Do it.

Also buff Zabba again. She deserbes it.

Well, at least there's that.

This part got a big chuckle out of me.

Thanks, Butterman.
