From what I found out, its a fear that tends to start from a young age and sometimes it remains with them. Leeds Unveristy carried out a study which showed a clown/jester bizarre fiacial features is what tends to scare kids. I think most people don't fear clowns to begin with, but see in most every movie with clowns in them have some kids screaming and crying, and incorporate that into their being...
