Hard times = oppurtunity

With buisnesses closing down and people generally losing money, stuff is cheap. This is the time where vultures come and pick off people's misfortunes and profit because of it.

I am one of those vultures :o

This week, a book store near us was closing down and things were over 40% off. They didn't have much left when I went there, but I found my way to their manga section and just went nuts. I came out of the store with 9 books that together cost about $35. I was happy.

My uncle collects and fixes/rides ATVs, and between him and my dad we have about a dozen of them. We get together at a family member's house with a huge property line and ride for hours. We've had as many as 9 people going at once (not all the machines work). They've gotten the machines mostly from people who HAD to sell them.

So... my joy is derrived from other's displeasure. I am a bad person.

Well, it's good for you now, but wait till you need a job and all the businesses are closing. =/

Things are gonna get rough soon.

A job would be awkward for me right now, but you're right. Also why I've been saving my money in the bank.

Schadenfreude is pretty crazy like that, to be sure, although people going out of a job is never, ever a good thing.

Good thing I'm into photography; if I can't find a job, I'll just sell prints on DeviantArt and hope that gets me by. (I've been considering it for a while anyways...)

Aww look at me Im talented and I can live thanks to it while mortals need to almost die until they find if they are good at something, so then they can practice a lot of years just to be defeated by another talented persona like me who can just poop masterpieces that will print money [/rant]

(don't take that seriously^^)

Anyway this Shadenfreude IS pretty crazy, but is more common than you think, we humans are disgusting creatures really.

I didn't quite mean it like that!

But yeah, Schadenfreude is found in a lot of people, apparently. Hell, there's even a song about it in Avenue Q.

What makes you so sure?

Things usually get worse before they get better; and yes, even if Obama is invading the White House in a little over a week things aren't going to get good in the economy for a while. I'm holding on to the hope that we won't find ourselves in the lows we saw in the Great Depression, but I'm certainly not expecting the economy to improve overnight either. The economy is one of those things that takes a while to repair, you know?

We're already in a recession, though (meaning things have already gotten worse). Do you have any evidence that things are going to get worse still?

In other news, I have noticed very little change in the Midwest due to economy getting worse, apart from the news.

About the only thing that affected me was that I couldn't buy some Wii points while at Walmart. Otherwise, here in Indiana, I don't see anything immediately wrong with the economy.

Murphy's Law. No, but it's unrealistic to expect things to start getting better immediately once they've gone down. At best, we'll be hovering at the level we're at now until things start to get better. And besides, how can we be sure that we can't go any lower, anyhow? Cynical, I know, but it's better than being the overzealous Obama fan who'll be dissapointed when the economy doesn't improve overnight.

So, exactly how are things with the economy outside of the Midwest? Must be pretty bad for it to be in the news so often...

Miami is a pretty good example of how the economic crisis is hitting hard; down in Miami, the local government's been giving budget cuts left and right (the public school system is really suffering from these budget cuts). I say pretty good and not best, though, because the local government there is really bad at getting its financial priorities straight. Really, what's the point of refurbishing a road so that it's made of nice-looking bricks insted of asphalt if the school system is suffering from budget cuts?

That's not overzealous; that's ignorant.

True. Except that I think most of the ignorant people hovered around the McCain camp since they don't know that socialism =/= communism and because they got convinced by Palin, who's probably the stupidest bitch I've seen on the political scene. (I think being the key phrase here; the rest of my family was in the McCain camp, but since they were intelligent about their decision I'm sure lots of other people could've been intelligent about being on McCain's side as well.) But still, you do have a point there.

Don't Florida's schools suck anyways?

I don't know if Palin lacked intelligence, but I think her lack of national political experience was more responsible for her fuckups. But I'm going to shut up before I dive deeper into things I don't know about.

But she knows a lot about foriegn policy. Alaska is right there ;)

Well, I take that stance more because of the vice presidential debate between her and Biden. To me, it didn't seem like she really answered the questions that the moderator (I forget her name) put forth; Palin's answers were a bit too much like an obvious McCain advertisement and if they weren't foreign policy questions they didn't really provide any real solutions to the questions.

The superintendent of MDCPS was a real dumbass who thought that doing nothing but teaching standardized tests that you'd easily pass if you just learn your standard curriculum was a good idea ('was' because he left this past year), so at least for Miami that's true. Hopefully the new guy will spend the budget on much more important stuff.

"And I can see Russia from my house!" :P
