The fried chicken thing someone threw in for.. context or something, and people restating things does relate to this because it's making the discussion go in loops.

The most off-topic thing here is you pretending to be a moderator, so kindly step off.

Edit, no, we are talking about what he will do with the health care system.

You were talking about fried chicken and how people keep restating things already said. That's off-topic.

And now we're trying to talk about European health care.

Are you so simple minded. We are talking about THE PRESIDENT FOOL! *SLAPS*

Obama wants to sort out the health care. I was just comparing!

Geez christ!

Quoted for truth.

Delmud, if you think that people are going off topic or are generally breaking the rules, you report it. See that nifty little report button down there? Use it. You coming in and telling everyone to get back on topic when they aren't doing anything wrong isn't helping anything at all.

Now let's just forget about this and get back to the topic at hand. This goes for everyone else, too.

Though America health care system is rubbish compared to the EU where they have the NHS, that is controlled by the government.

I don't think that, even with Obama as President, healthcare in America is going to be totally controlled by the government given how much this nation fears the government controlling the way things run (even when it's a good thing). And besides, you can't just decide that the government is going to run healthcare on its own like Europe does what with our massive Bush-induced deficit and what-not. Even if we didn't have a deficit, though, if government control were to be instituted, it would have to be in very small steps that slowly wrest control away from the corporations.

Well from what I know, in America (please correct me if I am wrong) patients have to pay for the medical health fees.

I recently watched a programme on the BBC explaining that America has the advanced medical technology, but paitents are not able to afford the health insurance.

The EU system is not perfect. There are some flaws mainly within the drug sector but nearly everyone is able to get some form of treatment.

Health insurance is, like almost everything else in America, a commercialized thing; the market takes care of it instead of the government. Thus, in the U.S. you have to pay for health insurance from Humana or Blue Cross Blue Shield or whatever other insurance company covers your costs. And even then, there are some things that your insurance won't cover, which makes life a pain if an expensive surgery you need to have is not covered by your health insurance.

And actually, your system may have flaws, but ours as it is is even more flawed if only because the companies don't cover everything. My U.S. Government teacher actually went on a rant about how nobody seems to realize that universal healthcare is a good thing once during class.

Yes that is what Obama wanted to sort out. Make Health care available for all those who need it.

Universal health care has many detractors, and contrary to popular belief the president is NOT trying to create a universal health care system, and NEVER said he was going to. He said he will attempt to create a program of cheaper health insurance and subsidies to help people pay for their current insurance.

I do like the fact that in America you may have to sit in a waiting room for a few hours, rather than a few months like in Canada. America is also the cutting edge of medical technology, with the largest and most advanced hospitals in the world. It is an observable fact that although government controlled programs can sometimes (rarely) operate more efficiently, almost never do state programs generate ingenuity or new invention. Such a phenomenon is most observed on the private market.

I really like Obama, I love my country so much and I'm glad to see my new President, black white, blue, red (not green..... he might have anger issues)

The sad truth is that the US is in a deep shit hole. Collage I want to go to FIU dropped 8000 students and are accepting less due to budget cuts. I'm a softmore right now and I'm doing alright in school, above average. I'm going to start kicking it into high gear becuase I might not get into the collage I want and end up going to Miami Dade (scrub collage).

It's predicted I will need AT LEAST a 1300 to go to FIU -_- as opposed to the original 1100. FIU is a great school that is in my area, my friends are already in and my Dad went there, plus it's a great looking place.

I'm saying this because..... Obama has 2 years to get me into FIU!!!

/ignorance

I just really hope he does something to benefit us, I know 2 years is impossible to reverse what has happened or even see a decent change, but meh I hope Obama really is some God (Bad Morgan Freeman Joke) XD

I neither think Obama will be able to institute government controlled health-care, or should. He needs to make a way to build the health care off free-market principles. If all hospitals will get the same number of patients, regardless of care and cost, what reason do they have to try and lower prices or give better care? That form of health care has much common with communism, and that has already been proven not to work. Besides the government corruption and ineptitude, people will have no motivation to give better care.

Socialism =/= communism, and look no further than Sweeden for a very successful welfare state.

And again, no one is talking about a government takeover of healthcare.

In Sweden (and some other countries of Scandinavia IIRC) the goverment pays for your health care. You also get six weeks paid vacation. Of course, tax rates are higher.

I know they are not the same thing, but in many cases, people are asking for full-on communism in their health-care. And while most people here are smarter than to suggest a total takeover, many people do want that kind of thing. I do realize that health care would not be run by one party (like communism), but it still gives almost all power to the government (more than socialism does).

Your wall of evidence has changed my opinion. You are a god.

Depends on exactly what you want. I'll just assume you want government takeover of health care. Here's why it won't work:

But they don't care about saving you money. I had a simple operation done, took about 25 minutes, and it cost $12,000. They want to make more money, that's all there is to it.

But if you think it's too expensive, you can go elsewhere. If the government says "You go to that hospital to get that care!" there's no reason for different places to compete.
