Steven Tyler
I believe it. I didn't live through it, but I can just imagine. Yeah with the whole "Blame Comic Books" bandwagon of that era. Look, when new media comes out, people will bash it because they know little to nothing about it. They assume the biggest bullshit about the media and have the mindset that it is true without doing any research about it.
YokaiKnight
I'm living proof otherwise. I play games and I get A's and B's regularly. My GPA is 4.0 for crying out loud. :P Seriously though, this is nuts. I suppose they think all comic books are evil too. Hey, that's what manga is. It's just from another country. 10 to 1 those people have never even read manga before. Somehow your use of obsenities doesn't do much for your case. I'll bet most people don't even know what Bible Black is; I don't even know what it is. I'm guessing one of your Bs was in Sarcasm?

Does said government wish to close off trade completely from Japan now?
Der Kommissar
Akamatsu Ken, amusingly enough, was an h-doujin artist. He (or maybe one of his assistants) still seems to do so under a pseudonym every now and then.

Aori Radidjiu
I think one thing the people who bash things like anime and manga don't take into account is that those forms of entertainment come from a different culture. What may be considered "bad" in one culture can be considered acceptable in another, and vice versa. Calling these things "bad" because they don't follow your cultural norms is simply ignorance. This sort of xenophobia is honestly more harmful than the alleged "evil" products. I wish people could be much more open-minded. That said, while I am not a fan of anime/manga for largely the same reason that I dislike most comics/cartoons, I am pretty much with the consensus on this. Aori Radidjiu
Cultural/Moral Relativism is a logically indefensable stance. Yeah, I'm pretty aware of that. It's next to impossible to have a clear understanding of cultural differences and the like, you can only point out that the morals vary, but not how deeply they contrast from one culture to another. It's a kind of thing that can only be opinion-based, and logic requires you to eschew opinions. Moral-based discussions in general are extremely difficult to debate, as you can't really prove someone's morality is flawed. One big reason that I can't stand religious zealots and the like is that the only thing that they can back themselves up with is "This is what God wants you to do!" or something like that. You can't ever hope to give a logical argument for that kind of thing.

You can't ever hope to give a logical argument for that kind of thing. Religious zealots are morally wrong more often than not. I do agree that the morality discussion is a difficult one. Though I would say that Japanese attitudes towards sex (and the ages they portray some of the 'active' characters in their media) is both troubling and indicative of an overall problem of the audience that many manga/anime artists pander to. Or maybe the perverts are the artists themselves. And the funniest thing about all of this is that Japan is seen as a very conservative nation... albeit with a varying ages of consent that range from 'borderline too young' to 'they're still just children!'. And while I do not intend for what I'm saying to represent any of the manga/anime fans here, I do wish to acknowledge that the misunderstanding about anime/manga representing depraved cartoon porn is not entirely without basis. Perhaps, much like videogames, the medium still has some maturing to do.

Perhaps, much like videogames, the medium still has some maturing to do. I agree that its a kind of problem. I personally can sometimes get uncomfortable (although perhaps that's the wrong word, it's not quite that) when watching certain anime, reading certain manga, or even reading translate from Japanese novels. There are sexual overtures that just seem entirely unnecessary at times. Its not enough to make me dislike the things themselves, but in a lot of cases I would prefer that such things where not included. I can understand an author describing a woman's chest, say, once, if its something important, although it rarely is. But when every couple pages you get something like "He stared googly eyed into the gaping valley of her cleavage", I really don't need that... Rehab
Related: Jazz was once regarded as evil. That is a silly comparison. I'm not generally a great fan of manga/anime not because it's disgusting or some nonsense but because I find most of it repetitive. Not to say that other entertainment stuff isn't situationally guilty of the same problem. Age of consent in Japan is 13. No, really. As for attitudes about sex, that's...a very interesting topic. My Japanese teacher in school actually went on a little about this recently, apparently the people there would rather do it on a bench in a park at night than at home, which might sound downright exhibitionist if you didn't take into account that in some areas of Japan, the houses are so tightly packed that even if you manage to get your own home (with the rather expensive land costs), that kind of activity at home would bother the neighbors because the houses are that close. Interestingly, despite the common fan-service in many anime/manga, public displays of affection are frowned upon in that part of the world as well. I'm not going to call myself an expert on the Japanese, though. I mean, I've never been to Japan.
