He's died for me a few times in my early playthroughs but I always restarted and he never died again. He's a god in my game and he always gets awesome level ups. The Swordmasters and Paladins all ganged up on him and miraculously he dodged and killed every single one of them. I think Boyd is the best unit in PoR.
