There's a bunch of Fate stuff that takes place in alternate universes. I think Tristian's avi is from Fate/Prototype, which is based on an early draft of Fate/Stay Knight. Yeah, Chad's probably the best thief in the game, so his loss was particularly stinging (for me), especially since I tend to factor him into my earlygame tactics on both difficulties due to his very good growths. After that it's just letting his growths be as surprisingly good as they are. I tend to get the most use out of him of the three anyway.
