Actually, quite the opposite. You were just some grunt doing...corporal work. Adrian Shepherd was the player. You commanded nobody.

I could split hairs here and say that a Corporal is, commanding or otherwise, not an officer per se, but I'm not going to.

But he does end up commanding quite a few of the other surviving soldiers. (regardless of how quick they end up dying)

To clarify: I assume we're going off of the following:

-tactical ability (do they win the fight?)

-how good they are at keeping their subordinates alive (would one want to serve under them?)

-to a lesser extent, their own fighting ability (how much ass do they kick on their own?) (this does not necessarily apply to the highest ranks)

Precisely.

Captain America's a pretty big badass when it comes to fighting a war of attrition, but he cares too much about his troops.

But the alternative is then http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WeHaveReserves

(Admittedly that's how I play FE XD)

And yeah, I shoulda nominated Brenner/O'Brien/whoever.

I don't remember having any teammates in OF. At any rate, that criteria could let me nominate Gordon Freeman, because he technically commanded a squad of rebels who followed him unbidden in one chapter. :P

No he's not. When Cody Travers tells you to turn the beat back, you TURN that motherfucking beat BACK. He's got more authority than any of these other people.
