Bosskilling can be a pretty big hassle if you're not lucky, given that the weapon hit rates are generally pretty bad other than swords and bows, and even then the throne some bosses are on gives them a massive 30 evade. I'll give you the boss killing. Though I will agree that axes are good against those you mentioned, even if they're not good against much else. And my issue with lances is more the fact that what they're supposed to be good against is generally used by speedy units, which are the same stuff I'd generally be tempted to use a sword on.
