Espinosa
Faster Lapras with an inferior movepool and a worse stat distribution, but a much higher starting level, so it's probably better than Lapras from the standpoint of efficiency for that reason. Water/ice STABs are nice, and it can learn Ice Beam at L51 on time for Lance. Thick Fat makes it good for Blaine, and it's really nice when up against Giovanni as well. 7/
MacLovin
8/10 Faster Lapras without the good movepool. But signal beam is a nice toy
Ema Skye
Bimpity bump bump, look at Frosty go! So Seel. It comes really late, and it's most likely going to come underlevelled. It's also one of like 20 Water-type families in Kanto. So what keeps Seel unique? Uhh, nothing really. It gets moves like Ice Beam and Surf, which are nice for coverage. Signal Beam is also kinda cool, but it comes too late to be useful. Dewgong itself has mediocre stats. It's a Water-type, so it has a solid advantage against the last two gyms, and STAB Ice Beam is pretty cool for Lance. 5/10 - A average Pokemon gets an average rating
TheVinceKnight
Seafoam Islands. It's there for the last two Gyms and Lance. Seel/Dewgong. Not the best bases in the world. Ice Beam / Surf / Signal Beam OKAY for coverage, but it... does its job, I suppose. 6/10.

Espinosa
Joins late (fun fact is that you can apparently fish out L40 Grimers in Celadon with a Super Rod) and doesn't offer much relief. Can learn Brick Break by TM and learns Sludge Bomb naturally which is the only way to learn it (late though). Tanks special hits pretty well with his bulk, but is slow and has no means of setup. Huge special movepool of options that he makes poor use of (and that are expensive as all fuck). By the time you do get him, you don't need an extra Pokemon to deal with mooks. 3/

TheVinceKnight
This thing becomes especially overpowered in Black and White as a Sweeper. Right now its a pretty good Defensive tank. Surf / Ice Beam are main STAB moves, although its good for walling more than attacking. 7/10.
Espinosa
Can deal with Giovanni and is helpful against Lance, but below average speed and low special defence make Cloyster a poor candidate to take on Blaine, Dragonite (with Outrage), Exeggutor and whatever fire-type your rival uses. Physical bulk isn't as immensely helpful when it comes so late that it'll only help with absorbing Raticate Hyper Fangs in Silph Co, and you better be outspeeding those with higher-levelled Pokemon. It wouldn't hurt if it came at a higher level too. 6/
Dr. Silent
In FR/LG...5/10. Doesn't join early enough, typical poor movepool many Kanto Water types seem to suffer from...it does get STAB Surf/Ice Beam but so does Lapras, who also learns Thunderbolt and has better stats. Has nice Defence, though.

BBM
Day 40: Gastly/Haunter/Gengar
Dr. Silent
8/10 for statistics/movepool/gameplay etc. Gengar has an awesome movepool but Gastly is terrible and a pain in the anus to train up. Haunter is somewhat better. Can be obtained at a decent level, 18 or so I think, so not much more training on Gastly to do (as opposed to the Johto games where you could only find one at level 5 or so). Haunter doesn't necessarily even have to be used. Would give 9/10 but since FR/LG was before the Physical/Special split thus both of Gengar's STAB move types are Physical, so 8/10. In terms of through the game, Erika can't do much to him and he can one-shot both her good pokemon with Psychic (TM can be grabbed before this gym). Useless against Sabrina, although you CAN theoretically still teach him Shadow Ball...runs off 60 base Attack but at STAB is 120 points of damage and can potentially OHKO all her pokemon...but only if he's at a higher level or Alakazam will outspeed and one-shot him with Psychic. Average against Blaine, although useless against Arcanine because of Crunch. Good against Giovanni - he can probably one-shot Nidoking and Nidoqueen with Psychic, although a good Water type can do the same thing but against ALL of Gio's critters. Against the Elite Four the first time around, he's very useful against Lorelei because he can use Thunderbolt on her dual Ice/Water types. Can Psychic most of Bruno's pokes, who can't harm him with Fight moves. Can Psychic some of Agitha's pokemon but don't use him against her Gengars. He can Thunderbolt Lance's non-Dragon Flying types such as Charizard and Gyarados. As for the rival, it depends on what pokemon he has, although you can expect him to be useful to some extent. He's fragile, though, and needs to kill things quickly or they will kill him. Against the Elite Four the second time, he's much the same, but you have the option of trading him to Emerald and teaching him Fire Punch and Ice Punch at the Battle Frontier, making him even more useful. 8.5/10 for playthrough purposes, thus 8.25 overall. Espinosa
^ Arcanine has Bite actually, and that one's weaker than neutral STAB Fire Blast. Really needs TMs in order to be useful. Psychic and Giga Drain are one-of-a-kind and may be contested by other Pokemon, while Thunderbolt is pretty expensive. You'll probably want at least two of these three moves if you do intend to be using Haunter/Gengar, though. Physical movepool includes Shadow Punch and Shadow Ball, which allow Gengar to face the psychic and ghost types that aren't the easiest Pokemon to face in this game. Being mutually effective against one another, a level difference decides whether it is a good idea to face any of them. Though Haunter is a specialist, you will learn that he is still inferior to Psychic-types when it comes to special nuking, who get Calm Mind for setup and an actual special STAB. The difference between Haunter and Gengar isn't that drastic in generator 3, as Gengar doesn't have access to the three elemental punches; however, the luxury of a trade evolution adds Brick Break, Thunder and, if you care, Focus Punch as additional moves you could use, Brick Break probably being the better of the three in mook battles. Haunter/Gengar is great against Koga, Giovanni and Bruno, but may not be a perfect match for Sabrina, Lorelei and Agatha, especially if you are training a full team. Though it resists a lot of common attack types, it takes a lot of damage when hit by anything neutrally, be it physical or special, such as Dragonite's Outrage. Overall, pretty good if you skip the Gastly stage, but needs a substantial investment. 7.5/
BBM
Gengar is really one of those pokemon that gives you as much as you put into it. It's sort of like the Nidos in that way, but you need to go through the hassle of a trade evolution and it doesnt have the durability to stand up well to anything it can't outspeed and OHKO. That being said, being an inferior version of the Nidos is nothing bad, so 7.5/10.

BBM
Day 41: Onix Remember that Steelix is not counted!
Ema Skye
With Onix's stats, the first thing that you see is that massive defense. But... that's about it. It's one of the weakest Pokemon in the game, and it's low HP doesn't help it on the physical side, while also making it even more weak to special attacks. Onix's attacks hurt about as much as dropping a ping pong ball on your foot. It's a defensive Pokemon with possibly the worst typing for a defensive Pokemon. Not to mention it's gym performance. It joins before Erika, and if you use Onix in that battle stop playing Pokemon. It's not good against Koga either since three of his Pokemon are immune to Dig (which is the strongest STAB it gets without the Earthquake TM or the Move Tutor for Rock Slide). Sabrina is again, terrible for Onix. I guess it's OK against Blaine, and the Ground-type weakness keeps it out of Giovanni's battle. As for the Elite Four, Onix shouldn't be facing any of them, for a few reasons. First of all, it's either weak to their type (Lorelei and Bruno), they use special types (Lance), the opposing Pokemon are outright immune to Earthquake (4 of Agatha's Pokemon) or a combination of those. For Gary, it's probably only going to wall Pidgeot and be a stumbling stone for Charizard/Arcanine. That's it. 0.2 - One of the worst Pokemon in this game.
TheVinceKnight
Onix should be more recognised. ..Nah. I agree with Lucina. I'll be a bit more generous though. 0.25.
Espinosa
Kinda like Graveler, except dealing noticeably less damage and requiring more important TMs and tutors to work. Lower base HP makes him even worse than Graveler at eating resisted special attacks like Flamethrowers and Fire Blasts. Being faster than Graveler, however, means outspeeding more and higher defence means requiring less potions than Graveler would ask for. Still, even with Rock Slide and, much later, Earthquake and Double-Edge (which it can use without hurting itself), it will often be unable to OHKO things it can't hit super-effectively. With rock/ground coverage you should find plenty of chances to exploit the weaknesses of things assuming the aforementioned TM/tutor investment. Onix is helpful against Koga, Blaine (where it struggles to survive consecutive fire-type STABs) and Agatha, as the old woman's Pokemon rely entirely on physical attacks. Onix is fairly safe when up against most Lance's Pokemon, as Gyarados does not run any water-type moves. Good luck tanking those Dragonair's Outrages when all you have is Screech and Earthquake. It really does take time for Onix to kill things, and you'll be spending turns trying to Screech your targets before you can deal substantial damage to them, and Screech is inaccurate like most other moves Onix will be using. This makes Onix pretty inefficient even when it's safe to switch into like a half of the enemies you meet (usually ones easily dealt with by anything else). 2.5/
