I thought they did it as an experiment of the sort to see how they would run future FE games by the success of each version(?) While one is supporting the veteran's playstyle that has been occurring throughout the years, the other is trying to attract newcomers with the similar playstyle that Awakening had.

that really doesn't sound that bad of an idea tbh

so like, see which version runs better and they'd run with that?

It's two Awakening sized games and you get discount on the other game as DLC.
I don't really see the problem. It's not Pokémon where it's nearly exactly the same thing.

There's gameplay differences, story differences, character differences...

Imagine the toll on the writers and designers.

I won't question the why and how, I'll just say, it's not the only way to do it.

It's not neccesarily just about the path splits.

Nohr and Hoshido's gameplay styles are considerably different, and with a game where you have so much free roam on dialogue (since choices apparantly matter a lot and there's conversations both in My Castle and supports) it's exceptionally difficult to fully script. Most games that have routes or path splits are usually rather straightforward when it comes to character interaction or gameplay, or work by using a simple set of conversation flags.
