You loose money for every unit that got to 0HP, and you get them back for next stage. You can check how much money since it is displayed in the status screen of the mecha. Character death is only ever plot-related. Since all characters are involved with in the plot one way or another due to the cross-over nature of SRW. As a note though it is still very recommended that you don't let the mechas bite it. Since the money is better used to upgrade them than to repair them.
