They were forced to do that, just like Germany was forced to give up half of current Poland, plus Königsberg. The treaty never said they couldn't have a self defense force, and they having a large one makes complete sence when you consider they were really close to communist China plus the Sovied Union right during Cold War. Nowadays they have to worry about North Korea. It was not only their interest but also the former Allies that they had one. The ban wasn't exactly imposed on them. WW2 was followed both by Allied pressure to demilitarize and a growing Japanese pacifist movement. Both of these factors played a role. In fact, article 9 was suggested by the Japanese prime minister. While the article does not state that Japan cannot have a self-defense force, it does state that it cannot have any land, sea or air forces, or any war potential. Self-defense forces of this size and strength are at least war potential, if not actual land, sea and air forces. I'm not saying they're practically wrong to have this big of a military, but juridically, they're violating at least the purpose, if not the letter, of article 9. Instead of either living up to their own constitution or changing the article, they keep "reinterpreting" it, so they can keep expanding their military and its powers. I had spent most of the game without one rook, but in the end we were both down to just a rook and knight, and pawns. But I managed to get the upper hand by taking the opponent's rook. Still had to give up my own and the knight, but it ensured a pawn to reach the other side of the board and regain a queen to checkmate.
