Acacia Sgt
The bordering states were doing better at the expense of profits in other states. So change wasn't something they wanted... I understand why The"Pseudo-independence movement" sprung up in regards to that situation. Ugh, I used to think the equalize affect was the best idea for a lot of things but yeah that thought clearly doesn't work all the time :( Economy is crumbling huh. Sorry to hear that. :( Hopefully it picks up in the future. Yeah, equality doesn't always mean justice.
Tryhard
This reminds me, when was Scotland's referendum going to be...? It's stated for this year, September supposedly.. I am unsure about independence, though. If it would benefit the country, I'm all for it. But I'm not an economist, and we may be worse off declaring ourselves independent from the UK now with the oil in the North Sea being scarce, one of our major incomes, and I don't want the economy to end up like the Republic of Ireland. I like my socialized healthcare and education (tuition fees) that I currently have, even if we pay 17.5-20% VAT. Yeah, that's also pretty much why in here the independence thing was more of a protest than an actual declaration. Not much to go by if we become independence. Chances are we'd just get reabsorbed out of necessity, if not by México, then by the US... I wonder which is the lesser of two evils... Stargirl
Well, Alaska is pretty split up from the rest of the states, but it's true that the Québec leaving would create a big hole. Is French mandatory in all provinces/cities? I thought Ottawa was special for being the capital of the country and officially a bilingual city. Some Québecers have some serious case of hubris. In Québec, it's sometime 12h+. The movie 'Sicko' by Michael Moore showed how the Health care system worked in England and France and I think there's some elements we could use. Thank you ^^ Oh yeah! Forgot about Alaska :P French is mandatory in Ontario. Not too sure about the other provinces >.> lol idk why I keep thinking Toronto is the capital. You should meet some Ontario-naters...? They think Ontario is the most important province just bc Ottawa is in it :P I think I saw that movie in my course! I think... Anyways if we were more like England, Norway, France and especially Sweden, in terms of healthcare, we would be doing better. I think Sweden even has free post-secondary education.... I'm super jealous. >:( Yeah, equality doesn't always mean justice. Learned that the hard way...

The other thing is that the party trying to instigate this independence is the Scottish National Party - who fall into the nationalist trap, which I have no desire to support, considering they pretty much hate everyone that isn't Scottish in our country. There was a Scottish Socialist Party that fell in more line with my views if I did want independence, but they have pretty much no power. I do meet some Ontario-naters, since I live in Gatineau, which is just beside Ottawa and we're basically 1 big city, but I never met some that bragged about Ontario as much as some Québecers brag about Québec. Sweden and other nordic nations have a lot of good social services and politics that we could adapt to our country. In the US we have one of the most expensive healthcare systems in the world! yay, but they got freedom

LuxSpes
But you guys get time off from work without penalty! Your required to take time off from work is what I heard. Well, the government employees have a certain number of 'sick days' per year, where they can stay at home and still get payed. If you don't use all your days for one year, they get stockpiled for the next year. However, you cannot transfer more than 7 weeks worth of sick leave, so if you have 8+ weeks at the end of the year, you're better off taking a sick leave so as to not to waste them. Maybe I should move to Ontario after I graduate college, then. I understand French well enough, at least. :D I don't see the link between Ontario and understanding French.
