Though that does raise the question of how characters survive ridiculous things in combat and then die in a cutscene... Or it could be like FFIV where "cutscene death" means basically nothing. Even if you're an old man suicide bombing while falling from a great height. They do, I think FF8 and 9 are some? Uhh.. I can legit say, I never thought about that... I can get some stuff like attacks but the extravagent things like Ultima and the like... though I chalk it up to flash and dynamic effect... the bigger the explosion the bigger the damage... or something like that.
