Pull My Devil Trigger Posted December 13, 2014 Share Posted December 13, 2014 I'd say someone like me is prescriptive when it comes to language, whereas someone like Tonton is descriptive. Prescriptive is: "The rule is this, therefore people must say/write it like this." Descriptive is: "People say/write it like this, so the rule must be this." In a grander perspective, I think both prescriptive and descriptive forces are needed to keep language evolving properly. Without prescriptive forces language would become an unruly mess. Without descriptive forces language would become artificial and unnatural. I'd say it is impossible for the descriptive aspect not to exist and the lack of a prescriptive approach at some point just leads to the eventual creation of yet another language that could differentiate more and more with time but that is not really what i was getting at my point was correcting mistakes that do not affect the message at all lack of capitalization on a case where the meaning of the word and the sentence is a whole remain the same a typo that has not really turned the intended word into another one that will either change the message or even void it of sense even more so when it's clear that it was more a oversight rather than the person not knowing what would be right and as a side question, do you think a person should be penalized in a essay for a single misplaced letter when in other instances of the same word in the same essay the spelling was done correctly?
