Most popular Nintendo franchise?

It might depend on whether or not we count spin-offs as part of the franchise. For example, do we count Mario Kart as a Mario game, or is it its own franchise?

Mario, no contest.

It's one of the longest running video game franchises out there.
It's been highly popular since it started in the 80s.
Mario is the most popular video game character of all time.
Most of their games get mostly positive criticism.

In fact, you could go to starving children in a third world country, hold up a picture of Mario, and they will recognize him.

I find it useful to count the number of characters from each series in Super Smash Bros. 4.

Mario: 9

Zelda: 5

Pokemon: 5

Fire Emblem: 4

Kirby: 3

Kid Icarus: 3

Retro Nintendo: 3

Donkey Kong: 2

Metroid: 2

Star Fox: 2

All other series: 1

Sin and Punishment: 0

Although I don't remember Fire Emblem or Kid Icarus being so popular...

Well, Fire Emblem is gaining popularity, Kid Icarus might be too especially with Uprising on sale.

Actually, my observations are even more accurate if you remove the clone characters. Speaking of which, did you know that each clone character has only appeared in just one game?

Dr. Mario (NES), Dr. Mario (GB), Dr. Mario 64 - Oh look, that's three games that Dr. Mario has appeared in...

Also, Lucina has been confirmed for SMT X FE.

He probably means they've each only been in one smash game, not that they've been in only one game period.

I don't feel like checking to make sure that take on the statement is true, though.
