For Est, I usually train her in the arena until she caps something - anything - as a Falcoknight. (Usually it's speed). Then I take her back to the base and reclass her into a Sniper, for a good defense growth. After obtaining it for awhile, she's reclassed again into a swordsmaster for the best health points growth, and she stays as a Swordsmaster to set off the Traingle attack, as Palla is always an Archer for the best speed, and Catria is arbitrarily a Sniper or Swordsmaster.
If you aren't willing to reclass much, then I recommend a Sniper due to balanced growths and the best HP base, as she does not really like getting HP.

I'm guessing some of the stuff being said about them came from Gamefaqs.
Yep. You hit the nail on the head. There's just so much of it.

I decided to use Minerva - 1. she's royalty, and 2. she's Maria's sister, and that A support is awesome (though you have to work for it). So I thought I would give my overview.
Minerva, though a pre Advanced unit, has solid bases and solid growths that keep her in the game. She is an Erk - her growth rates are incredibly fickle at almost exactly 40%, so she varies incredibly with her upgrades. For her first 9 upgrades when I used her, she gained 3 stats or less. However, for the last 10, she pulled out all the stops and got 4+. I reclassed her into a Sniper, which only furthered her improvement and growths, and I was sick of her getting incredibly crippled when hit with a bow. Her bases for skill and luck are incredibly low, so she may be a little shaky in those respects and get critted a few times (once in my runShe also has a lot of defense when compared to many other units. She capped in Chapter 23, right after killing Michalis.
Her A support with Maria takes the remainder of the game to achieve, including all of the X chapters (except for 1) in which they must be deployed together. It drastically boosts the crit % and even helps your luck.
Her stats - Level 20 Sniper
HP 40
Str 19
Mag 0
Skill 23
Spd 26
Luck 18
Def 21
Res 3
Bow - B
And what's more, since I normally use those who can cap stats on their own, I had so many steriods left over that she got almost all of them. Her stats afterwards -
HP 54
Str 24
Mag 0
Skill 30
Spd 29
Luck 18
Def 21
Res 7
Bow - A
*I don't know how to clock hack, nor do I want to know. I just play normally, though I do use save points.
If you're going to use a pre advanced unit period, I suggest Minerva. She's awesome.
Going to try out Midia next.

FESD!Caeda, FESD!Minerva, FE9!Mist, FE9!Astrid, FE10!Elincia, and Laura are all bad? Since when?
I've heard alot of stuff about those guys (not on this site), mostly just haters. Especially about Mist and Elincia.
Minerva has crappy growths but awesome bases. Lile a Jagen But who said Caeda sucked?
^Like that. But she rocks whenever you user her...In my opinion.
Still, she only gets 11 exp per turn and won't likely get to second tier (unless you dump a load of BEXP on her - which if you are playing on Hard is a waste), let alone third.
I just buy a boatload of staves and EXP grind on the laguz bosses in Chapter 4.

Oh yeah I forgot she was a princess. And since [spoiler=Nagi]Gotoh hints at Nagi being revived Tiki/Naga I think you can use her.
Yeah... And Naga's definetly royalty. Nagi's history is just so weird...But the battle convo with Medeus just about confirms her.
-
As for Merric, I think he can be used.
Well, not entirely sure about this, but according to this playthrough, he is indeed a noble.
Actually, something more convincing is Ellerean's words in Mystery's Ch10, thinking that's why Merric got Excalibur.
For Linde, Miloah was a Pontifex. Does that count?
Alrighty, Merric's confirmed.
As for Linde, I don't know, as Fire Emblem may have some different meaning for the title Pontifex - realistically, it would be a No.
And just checked the Notes again: Ogma's father was a noble of Akaneia, so I guess that makes him eligible as well.
-
Alrighty, so I'm thinking about only using units of some Royalty or nobility...Just because of sick of people not saying anything when they are recruited and having no real importance...
And I realized that hardly any of the units have any backstory at all. So far, I have this list of units that can be used...
Absolutely can use -Royalty
Marth
Caeda
Hardin
Maria
Minerva
Tiki
Elice
Seemingly can use - Noble
Merric - Altean noble
Wendell - Pontifex
Linde - Miloah was a Pontifex
Horace - Akaneian noble, we're guessing
Nagi - Naga reincanate...or something
Can use because of Designers notes - Noble
Lena - According to the Designers notes, she is a Medonian noble
Matthis - '', And his ending title is 'Dashing Noble'
Jeorge - According to the Designers notes, he is an Akaneian noble, of Menidy
Midia - '', of Deil (where Maria was kept)
Ogma - According to the Designers notes, His father was a lower Akaneian noble
These are units I CAN use...I think. Am I missing any one?

Oh man did I hear that! I make a point to do that. All the time.
FE 11
Caeda
Norne
Athena
MARIA!!!
Minerva
ELICE! - I don't know why people think she's bad, she RULES.
FE 9
Mist
Rolf
Astrid
Elincia
FE10
Laura
FIONA!!!
Elincia
Heather
Mist
Kyza
I love doing this. My saying is that it doesn't matter how they start, when used, any unit can be awesome. :D
Oh, and in FE 12...
MARIA!!!
Nyna
Elice
Anyway! That's right! :D

I believe Twilkitri added all the sheets here. Just be aware that they're not like the sheets at FEPlanet - you'll have to manually piece together the parts yourself.
Ha! Oh wow, that set up is pretty funny, but it works nonetheless! Thanks!
-
Awesome sprites!! I hope you work your way to a certain Red-haired princess cleric soon!
And nice artwork as well! I think your Marth turned out the best. May I ask what program you're using?
-
Wow, I'd be nice to gain experience like that with healers if they accidentally get attacked. But the no exp for healing just sucks.
I've had a question for awhile now... What does the 'luck varies' thing for characters that start out as enemies equate to? I mean, how much does it vary by, or do they just have some random number for luck?
-
Great! Ah, no Maria. Dangit.
-
Does anyone have some really good face sheets for Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon? I'm trying to get some of the characters actually smiling, like Norne, Palla, Minerva, Elice, Maria, etc... Does anyone know where I can find some?
-
Wow. Personally, I sometimes find myself liking some of the faceless characters... Like a faceless cleric I got on in SD on Lv 4, ch 4... Trained her up to be a bishop and she beat out Lena...
...And then they get killed by a Cavalier with a 73 hit and 1 percent crit, who gets the crit. So, I guess Luck does mean something.
I hope it works out for you!
-
...Wow.

A female archer thats useful in one of the Hard Modes? Maybe Archer Athena or Sniper Minerva. If you're not going to restrict yourself to girls only, then definitely use either Hunter Cord or Draug.
Sniper Minerva rocks, that's for sure. Best class change for her. And Castor seems like a pretty safe bet, I just hate his speed and Luck. Eh.
-
I just can't do it! I end up going back again and again, just for Norne!
First off, on almost every playthrough I've used Norne, and she's just too dang useful for me to pass up. Her speed is amazing, and, for the first few chapters where the only characters I can bring myself to use are Marth and Caeda, she's a great support. As the game goes on she gets better and better, and I end up bringing her to my wifi squad with nice capped stats, and ...she's so freakin' cute.
My playstyle for the first few chapters involves Caeda weakening and Norne finishing, and Gordin just sucks... Augh, why, why can't she be recruitable on Hard mode?!
And I have no idea who to replace her with! As far as archers go, early on, she's the only one I use. ...And I really like doing all girl runs, so... I....
I need some help here.
-
Honestly I think the wifi is the best part of this game. My code is in my sig, let's go! I love a good fight!
-
Then it's not really canon, is it? Navarre and all the other recruited characters are supposed to be alive for Book 2.
I said 'usually', as in, I do that in most playthroughs, as I'm trying to get the X chapters. But this isn't my 'usual' playthrough, so of course I'm gonna recruit him.
That was making a sarcastic remark to say 'I'm not going to use him'. ;)
-
In canon, Navarre wont hurt women. So spare Pallies, Dracoknights, Tiki, and Pegasus knights. The former 2 have the same male/female appearance.
Not a problem, as a usually just kill him with Caeda.
-
Honestly I love the arena in this game. I love how you can keep going and going, so I can make enough money for a good wifi team in less than 500 turns with a good Arena dog like Radd or Marth. I love how you can cancel a cancel (it you used the touch screen) now as well. I abuse the arena in this game - love it. It gets me a completely forged inventory for wifi. :D
-
Maria and Caeda are my only all-timers. They never dissapoint. ...I definetly have a thing for princesses.
Other than that, consistent ones are Catria, Est, Norne, and Athena. First three are cute as heck, and Athena's accent makes me laugh.
-
You should definitely have Maria wield Starlight. No protesting! (And no reclassing, either.....)
Canonically, the game doesn't tell you who is "supposed" to use Starlight, so it really doesn't matter. I usually trade it between Merric and Lena and they defeat Gharnef in tandem.
If you really want to be canon, give Mercurius to Astram and Gradivus to Hardin. That will give you a preview of FE 3 Book 2.
Yup Yup. Imhullu doesn't even scratch her and she killed Gharnef in one hit (as a Sage; As a Bishop it takes two). ...Cuz she's awesome. NP!
I just hate it's uses because it almost breaks when I get swarmed by all the other peons around Gharnef.

USE DARROS BECAUSE I LIKE HIM
Seriously, Abel has sone megaawesome growths. And he was referring to FE3, where a of the units you get, except for them, wern't promoted.
Oh. Well I'm thinking of trying to use all the chars important to the storyline and have them fufill the duties the game / story wants them too... And unfortunately in Shadow Dragon hardly anyone has any importance and even less have personality. (Thankfully Maria is chock full of both.) Including alot of the knights and the people that join you without saying anything...
Anyway, it looks like it's either Merric or Linde that's ''supposed'' to wield Starlight...
I just beat FE1
in NES and SNES Era

...So...how much does the luck of characters that start out as enemies vary by?
