Lekain uses a warp staff instead of warp powder, iirc, which doesn't wear the user down.
But that aside, I also like the holding back explanation better. It makes more sense if he saw that Ike wasn't at his best yet and took it easy on him so that he might grow stronger one day.

Wow, you kids must have played an awfully low amount of RPGs to consider that stuff as top tier.
Though I'll hand it to you, Legend of Legaia is cool stuff.
There's actually a downside to not transforming, because they'll have halved stats when not transformed (like, 40 becomes 20, for example) and that means lower dodge rate, lower defence, etc.
I chose this as my handle since time immemorial, because I liked black magic and dark, gothic stuff (Castlevania, vampires, etc.) and now it's stuck with me. It's one of the few things I'm not ashamed of that has stayed with me since my childhood.
You can control their transformation, but it doesn't even matter. They're always weak to arrows/wind magic (all flying laguz, not just royals), but with Tibarn, you don't even have to worry since he's a dodging machine. Unless the enemy has a Crossbow or a Double Bow...
