  1. I'm genuinely not excited for Biden. He's a mewling centrist, a known shill for the health insurance industry, and he needs to stop touching and kissing people inappropriately. I'd still vote for him though.
  2. Heh. You're taking a mild hearted jab about as seriously as I guess I should have expected you to. But I'll entertain you. If you think there aren't any crazy rightists on Hawaii, you're sorely mistaken. The fact that 80% of the population votes dem means that 20% votes republican.
  3. "It was crisis actors" Stay classy, eclipse
  4. Don't worry we're looking at more than 9/11 times a thousand when all this is said and done.
  5. Blocking immigration is him pandering to his base. It's the sort of thing they want.
  6. So, around other parts of the internet, lotta people who would have voted Bernie or Warren are now saying they won't vote Biden. I'm not sure I've said this here before, but I don't think Biden is going to get elected if he doesn't throw the democratic left/socdem crowd a pretty big bone.
  7. Have you paid any sort of attention? It's not the children who are at risk, it's the people around them.
  8. My colleagues started repeating it halfway through february.
  9. Cuomo is also thanking trump for his response to the pandemic in the briefings.
  10. That's... Incredibly naive, and completely ignores the big discrimination lawsuits of the last several years. Or do I need to remind you that a christian can have a priest by their side when they're executed, but a muslim can't have an imam. Or that a damn baker can refuse to bake a cake for someone, just because they're gay? Or that discrimination statutes in the US are generally very weak?
  11. Wearing masks is 100% something to shame people over right now.
  12. First off, honor system quarantines are being ignored with some regularity. Second, wrt the face masks. Healthcare personnel and first responders need those masks because they're likely to be up close, dealing with infected people. You're not. You're someone who should be sitting at home as much as possible, washing your hands and staying 6 feet away from anyone who doesn't live with you. As long as you do that, the chance of you catching the disease is very small. Wearing a mask isn't going to change that for you. Furthermore, if you are infected but asymptomatic or not sneezing, coughing, atrophied, fevered or similar you're not a particular risk to anyone as long as you do aforementioned things. Regardless of your yammering about Asian countries and cultural differences, the bottom line is that there's a dramatic shortage protective equipment for people who are actually at risk. People like you and me, who really aren't at risk shouldn't be wasting precious resources for marginal at best effect.
  13. On the other hand, blue states will probably be left to fend for themselves, as is happening right now with New York
  14. In China the problem was mostly limited due to the lockdown. The US is really trailing behind with regards to that. Edit: I should say that the way South Korea limited the spread was with lots and lots of testing, right from the start, and isolating anyone who tests positive. The US is really behind on that as well
  15. "They attempted to do something and it worked horribly" is probably an accurate description of the Bush jr administration.
  16. Let people shelter in hotels. Plenty of those on Honolulu, and they're empty anyway. Hotels are also great places to keep people who need to be quarantined and can't stay home, imo.
  17. Apparently there's a private clinic in the UK that offers tests for $400 or so. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/13/harley-street-clinic-offering-375-coronavirus-private-test
  18. Since I don't think anyone here speaks Dutch, that's the director/ceo of the Dutch hospital with the most covid-19 patients. Says the hospital's only treating c19 patients now, has run out of capacity, and they're going to start with triage tomorrow
  19. The "Spanish" flu originated in America. The only reason it's called the Spanish flu is because Spanish newspapers were the first to sound the alarm bell. America (and the rest of the entente) was covering it up, rather effectively to boot, considering the censure going on at the time. Not that it matters. There's a serious uptick in violence against Asians, and this nonsense isn't helping.
  20. I wonder if there's some sort of targeted campaign on facebook that's telling people that tp's about to run out. That's really the only thing that makes sense to me.
  21. No. Gun control laws do stop gun crime, as shown by every country on the planet except the US.
  22. Leave it to trump to trump it all up. When I first read that story, and that the response of the administration was "well, maybe he has reason to distrust the Germans" I immediately wondered if German government had ever said no to him building a trump tower or golf course in the country. Turns out I was fucking right Now watch him cause another trade war over this.
  23. It doesn't prevent so much as delay and slow down the spread. This is extremely important because ~12% of known cases need some form of intensive care, and a significant number of those need ventilators.(breathing apparatuses) If the healthcare system gets overwhelmed, like has been the case in Italy for a few days now, lots of people start dying. It's a lot more manageable (and much more survivable) if, at any time, 5% of the population is sick. Rather than 50-60% all at once. The delay is needed to buy time to prepare, and to push into the summer because less people are ill in the summer. It frees up capacity to deal with covid-19 cases.
  24. Political parties where you come from probably hold party conferences to figure out their agenda for the election cycle. I can't guarantee you that's how it works in your specific case, but that's how it works in Western Europe, barring parties like PVV and Front National. And yes, those conferences are heavily publicised.
