So those new blessings, how much ya wanna bet a character can have both a Mythic AND a Legendary blessing, since Mythic isn't tied to Legendary heroes? I'd love that, personally. Means I won't have wasted handing out blessings.

I hope this is the case, though I feel like they might have mentioned it. It's going to be annoying if you can't and it's a ploy to make people whale for more blessings to switch between for arena and AR use.

  2. Eir was the design I liked best of the new characters, so that's nice she's the free one. AND she's a flier! I also like the mage general girl. Her edgy armor is pretty cool. The guy's got a cool sword, though his face mask is a little much.

Otherwise, not much going on. The new blessings that affect AR sound like a negative thing to me. I don't want to need blessings for that now too. Summoning tickets seem kind of random, but more free summons is always good.

As far as beast units, it's about time they got in. BUT, I can't say I like what we saw with Tibarn. Even as a huge flier guy I don't know if I want to see 3 movement fliers. That just reeks of more cancer to deal with, especially if they ever make ranged ones.

  3. RIP tier 18. I calculated that I needed to get all the aether from my remaining 2 matches to have enough for a 3rd, but I ran into a map I wasn't going to be able to win cleanly and still collect everything. I could have won it deathless for sure if I just ignored the aether, but to collect any I was going to have to lose at least a couple units. Ended up trying an alternate plan that didn't pan out (as I expected, due to me banking on the healing/dancing AI doing something it probably wasn't going to), and I still won but with no aether and just Ninian alive. If it worked I would have had a perfect run, but oh well, it was all-or-nothing anyway. It would have been a safe plan instead of a gamble had my bolt tower not hit 2 units, causing Veronica to heal and get danced 1 turn before I was going to be fully set up.

I'm finally dumping the bolt tower after this and probably not taking any offensive buildings anymore period, aside from whatever the bonus is.

Honestly, most of them are more a menace than a help. I almost never want them actually affect the enemy team and map. The tactics room might hold a unit down I wanted to bait, the catapult breaks a building making the enemy team harder to approach, the bolt tower causes healers to move on turn 3, etc. Even the very space they take up on the bottom row sometimes gets in my way for positioning.

  4. I think I'm going to miss out on hitting tier 18 by 1 defense loss. I can hit 7,280 max, but I'll probably lose 2 more full defenses as always over the next 2 days. I'd have to remain both perfect on offense and not get attacked one of the remaining days. (since I'll never ever get a real defense win in this mode) I went one day without getting attacked, so I'll have to pray for a second one. (got 3 failed defenses just today, so doubtful) I'm bummed, but I guess I didn't expect to even get this close anyway.

Really, if even 5 unit whale teams on cancer maps aren't stopping me I guess I shouldn't expect my poor defense units(mostly umerged) to do the trick.

  5. @Ice Dragon I'm pretty set on the general stuff, it's just some horse setups specifically that are troublesome. Like that map I posted above, my Camilla couldn't bait it due to Siegbert, so I had to either find a workaround (like I did) or go for sniping a unit. Sniping a unit doesn't work to well for me on those maps since it requires 2 dancers and cavalry movement to do safely against that sort of trap arrangement, which I can't really do with what I have available.(especially not verses merged + bonus stat enemies)

For most things, the combination of blade tome fliers, Camilla baiting anything non-red and Loki Thokk'ing healers/other mages works well. I think what I could use is better horses or a tanky unit that can bait a mix of blue and red safely (like a Rein + Legendary Eirika together), but I don't have the right units at the moment.

I don't know if you've seen my post above yet, but maps like this are actually way more open than they look at first sight. If you're comfortable spending turns to break buildings first the traps can be more or less ignored completely---if you open the spoilers you'd see what the map looked like after I spent a few turns clearing the necessary buildings.

(I messed up a little on my run---I wasted Reinhardt's turn repo'ing Azura up, not taking into account the fact that Cordelia would Galeforce first combat. If I didn't I could've just walked him into the bolt trap I triggered and danced him to kill Chrom, leaving only Veronica alive like I originally planned.)

Edit: If you have a good Galeforce Flier lying around you should be more or less fine on maps like this---but honestly Galeforce is kind of annoying to use properly, so I'm not sure if you'd want to do that.

I have a Galeforce Peri and Galeforce Cordelia on separate teams (though Cordelia's got Firesweep, since Peri's the Heavy Blade seal holder). Guess I'll have to put an extra dancer on Peri's team as I see you have 2. Hopefully that'd be effective enough without other horses on the team. (my Lyn and Rein are not worth using)

Thankfully next week my ill-bought catapult will finally be the bonus structure so these maps won't be quite as bad as with +4-8 enemy stats.

  7. Ran into another nasty cav map today. Not the worst interation of it I've encountered, though. I've been seeing a lot of similar ones this week. 1-2 ranged cavs and 1-2 Lunge melee cavs with a dancer on this exact type of map arrangement seems to be catching on. It's pretty annoying.

    Spoiler

    o13Umu0.jpg

No real way to safely trap check for any of my teams, even with my Aversa carrying Smite. Luckily I managed to just avoid bothering with the traps at all.

    Spoiler

    d8vIQfE.jpg

Spent a while thinking before I realized I could get Camilla into that corner spot if I used a few turns to break the items.  She baited just Azura and Rein while Seigbert was nothing afterwards. Loki kept Veronica busy while I grabbed the other fountain before killing her. Finished on turn 7 in order to grab the fountain, so all according to plan.

I should probably try to make a team dedicated to countering this type of map since I'm seeing so many of them, but I don't really know what that'd be with my units on hand. I feel uncomfortable changing one team to Cavs and dancers since mine may not be strong enough to kill the enemies with bonus stats and merges. Like this team was +4 stats since I didn't buy the offensive Panic Manor this week. (saving for 5th defense slot) My fliers are really the only ones capable of handling whale maps (not that this one was).

Also a shout out to the Judgralbro who made this themed map so I could get a break from all the cancer ones.

Edit: Like, everything is so much easier when I'm comfortable enough with the team to do stuff like this all the time. (It was a 5 unit team, so I crushed it with this---it's only a 2 turn clear because I needed to break rocks.)

This is why I'm sticking to fliers, since that's my thing and I'm comfortable with them. I never use Rein or Lyn for anything so I don't bother bringing cav teams. (sadly their neglect means they're too shitty to use on my defense teams too, though. Rein with no merges and no +atk IV is pathetic) The one cavalry I've got is Galeforce Peri, who I have on one team as a backup option.

i'm glad i'm not the only one where it takes a while to get going. these people and their "oh i got like 10 in 150 orbs" make me green with envy lol

SAME. Anything better than 150 orbs per 5* feels lucky to me. My luck's been really abnormal this month to be getting as much stuff as I have been. I hope it doesn't revert back to crap for Christmas

    YAY for Noire! :)
ugh that ti took so many orbs though. i get that thrall.

I'm used to 100 orbs usually not being enough to get me anything at all, even on a legendary banner.(I usually do really bad on these) I can't feel bad about the orbs I've spend for what I got. This banner's been a huge surprise, since all month I was dreading how bad my luck was probably going to be as I tried to get Lucina and Noire. The fact I got both AND Lucina's got a great IV is such a relief.

I'd love Ryoma, Hrid, Cordelia merges, a better Grima, etc. off this banner, but I really gotta stop so I have something for Christmas units. I let myself be greedy today trying to get Noire and it paid off, but I shouldn't keep pushing my luck.

  11. Oh man, I cracked today but it was worth it. I hit 200 orbs and was still it itching to pull on the legendary banner, even though I know I should save for Christmas.

I decided to snipe more colorless, still trying for Noire and a better FGrima IV. First I got a second Nina, +hp -atk. Kept going and finally got a Grima.. but it's another -atk one. Wasn't satisfied with another bad Grima and still no Noire.. I decided I'd go all-in until I got at least 1 thing I was really looking for, and then Noire finally appeared! Just a middling +def -hp, but it's decent enough.

About 90 orbs for 1 Noire and 2 merge fodders, but it was worth it to finally get her. I was so disappointed when I missed her this summer. I got lots of reds and blues that I begrudgingly skipped, but colorless was my priority since I already got Lucina. Hopefully I can get Ryoma and Hrid in the future. I've gotten enough Laevateins for now, so I won't pull more on red here.

The thing is, the possession isn't the motive. Serving Anankos is.

As for Surtr, I don't really see how it's ambiguous. He constantly talks about how the weak should serve the strong, clearly takes pleasure in causing pain, and constantly refers to the other characters as weaklings. It's pretty easy to tell that he thinks he's strong and so everyone else should serve him. If anything, it's a case of showing instead of telling. I don't mean to sound condescending with that, but they do a pretty good job of showing what his motives and personality are. They don't go into why he's that way, but neither does Fates go into why the entity posing as Garon serves Anankos as far as Birthright and Conquest are concerned (didn't finish Revelation so can't speak on that). Honestly, I'm fine with both of those. They're not particularly deep or thought-provoking, but some people are just assholes, and some people are just loyal servants of their superiors. I have a lot of problems with both stories but the motivations of those two antagonists weren't ever particularly high on that list.

Yes, and I said that was enough for me. It still explained why the war was happening. I don't really have a beef with possession being lazy or not. Not knowing Gooron's personal motive for serving Anankos really didn't matter to me, since he was just Anankos' tool anyway and carried out his function.

The Heroes story is barebones to keep things in brief bit-sized pieces, so that's why I'm unsure. You could even say if his dragon blood is part of what's driving him that it still just counts as himself, but it can't be said either way. You can say it's showing instead of telling, but in the context of Heroes' story we barely get to know anything about the OCs due to the constraints on these little chapters. So it always feels like it's up for debate if there's more there, which is all I'm saying.

I didn't quote the first part of your response because I agree; Surtr is pretty fade value and could've used fleshing out. This part is where my issue with your argument is. Possession is not a motive in the sense that you're using it for Surtr. We don't have any more context for why the creature posing as Garon is evil than we do for Surtr. Arguably less even, as Surtr's pretty obviously a sadistic, power-hungry conqueror. The entity posing as Garon has a grand total motivation of Anankos told me to do it. There's no explanation of why he serves Anankos or is willing to do these things.

Saying Garon's possessed so his actions make sense is a cop-out answer since the person being possessed is not the one doing anything. Possession is no different than brainwashing in that regard. It doesn't matter that they're brainwashed/possessed since they don't have agency, and the whole setup is reliant on how the other characters react or that the motives of the entity behind the brainwashing/possession makes sense.

Compromising the agency of a character does not justify their actions. All it does is shift where the justification has to exist. Well doesn't have to literally, but where it ideally would for a character to have understandable motives.

If it's about as much of a motive as IS is going to give, than that's what we have to work with. I don't really have a problem with that. In Fates' case it's enough to understand why the war is happening. (Anankos planting the creature to drive Nohr to war so both sides get wiped out) For Surtr, we assume that he's just attacking Nifl on a whim and that's that. Or as Drakhis has reminded, he mentions his soul's been burned away. So it's possible he may have still been bad to begin with while the Muspell dragon blood further influences him to just start torching things. The fact that it's kind of ambiguous is why I wish we knew some more about him, even if it still doesn't spell out his motives.

  14. 3 hours ago, Drakhis said:

Hi ! I don't know if someone said it, but Surtr is possessed, just not as much as Garon :

" The flame will devour everything. My enemies. My allies. And me. "

" The soul I once had...vanished in the flames of Múspell. "

He was always someone evil, but not as much as when he lost his soul.

I like him this way (Or I like to hate the way he is), but I really think we will see him in book three. Maybe we will get more detail.

You're right, he does make that comment about losing his soul. So I guess maybe it really is the dragon blood that's turned him extra evil (or I assume that's what flames of Muspell is supposed to refer to).

Yeah, he does fine as an unstoppable force that you want to see taken down. I think IS may be done with him, but it'd be nice if we do get to know some more about him still. We did still have Veronica and Bruno appear some in book two, so maybe they won't completely cut out the book 2 characters.

  15. 1 hour ago, bottlegnomes said:

It seems like grasping to say it's an assumption because Surtr doesn't come out and say "I like conquering and hurting people because I'm evil."

My entire complaint was it seemed like a missed opportunity by IS to not tell us a bit more about him. We don't need to know more about him, but I just wish we did. It's fine to me if his motive is really just burning stuff, as there's more than motive that would have been interesting to know about him.

He may just be evil as he seems, but with how barebones the FEH story it feels like there could have been more there. He's got 2 daughters and supposedly he's nastier than the previous Muspell rulers. It made me wonder if there wasn't some extra backstory we could have gotten, but the Heroes story is so streamlined that they didn't expand on much of anything. I used Garon as a comparison because he also a FE villain that has very little to him, but even he had some things we could learn about. Surtr just shows up with really no character detail at all.

I'm not even that bothered by this, since I still accept and am mostly fine with the simplicity of Heroes' story, but it was just a passing comment that it would have been nice to get a bit more detail in this case.

    1 hour ago, bottlegnomes said:

but since we're arguing the merits of a possessed character here

The merits really don't matter, as all I said was we know more about Garon than Surtr. His motive specifically being possession is not an issue, and I merely used that as a possible example when comparing Surtr's level of detail to Garon's.

  16. 4 minutes ago, bottlegnomes said:

I'm saying I disagree. I'm of the opinion that I'm possessed is every bit as hollow a motivation as I'm a conqueror. Everything pre-possession might as well not happen since it's a different character entirely. Take Gooron as an independent character from Xander's dad since he is for all intents and purposes. What makes his motivation and more fleshed out?

You can call it hollow reasoning all you want, but knowing an evil power-hungry creature possessed him still tells us why Garon's gone bad and is attacking Hoshido. For Surtr we don't even know that much.

Nice job, congratulations. Good to see you didn't let your bad luck last week discourage you and you even caught back up to most people who started ahead of you.

Do you happen to remember your rank? Would be interesting to know approximately how many people will start at tier 16.

I was really lucky to land exactly on the minimum needed. I managed to not mess up any matches and get all but a couple aether structures, so I'm glad the defense losses didn't spoil that. Sorry you didn't make it to tier 17. It seems like that would have been a hefty feat this week.

I just collected my rewards and I was 1,077.

  18. 12 minutes ago, Otts486 said:

yeah I'm sorry though I will say Surtr doesn't really need context for his actions. I mean you could give him one but it's not really necessary. Giving his actions context won't in any way give us a new perspective or humanize him. Cause again he's a force of nature he doesn't need to be humanized in order to work.

It may not be necessary, but I think the reason he doesn't have any is because IS didn't feel like it and the FEH story is simple and streamlined, not so much because he's intended to be a force of nature villain in the literary sense. It just feels like a side effect of fleshed out story and characters not being IS' priority.
