  1. @bottlegnomes@Otts486 I think you guys are missing my point. I wasn't saying Garon was great or anything, just EVEN Garon had more context to why he was being evil than Surtr. Even "he's just possessed by an evil creature" is more than nothing. I just wish we'd gotten a little bit more on what Surtr's deal was, that's all.

I can't say I find actual literary analysis worth the effort on most FE stories. This is just not really the series for it, in my opinion, and that's fine. (even if I do wish there was more to the stories, sometimes)

All it's really doing is shifting the blame. There's no actual explanation as to why Gooron is evil. He just looks like a guy who didn't used to be evil. It's not a motivation any more than sadism or conquest are. The possession works in FE8 because there's ambiguity as to when and how much Lyon is lost, his naivety in being willing to submit to that, and forcing Ephraim and Eirika to confront the harsh truth that their friend is gone even while staring at him and stop him. Possession is basically a FoN villain in and of itself, i.e. evil and gains its significance in how people confront evil. Replace possession with drug addiction. Garon is he stabbed me because he's a junky. Lyon is he turned to drugs because of feelings of inadequacy, but those stopped helping as much so he started doing more. His friends tried to help, but eventually had to admit he was a lost cause and he died alone after having just made things worse.

I don't mind the simplicity of Garon, but at least we get where he came from and more on what the situation with him was. I just wish we'd gotten a bit more context on Surtr's rampage too, even if sadism and conquest were exactly it. It'd just be nice to know more than nothing at all. I don't think there's much point thinking too critically about it though, since IS probably just took the road of simplifying their already simple story-telling for the game, so they didn't sweat the details. Again, being a mobile spin-off I'm neither surprised nor really blaming them for that choice anyway.

Assuming that IS decides to preview the units that get new weapons, who do you want to or expect to see? I kinda think they might have chosen the Whitewing sisters this time around for book 3 since they're a bit of a tradition (3 pegasus knights with them being the face of it as well as the Triangle attack originating from them) even if it's not followed sometimes. They have the second most appearances in FE games along with Camus/Zeke behind Anna. They were also featured as DLC in Awakening so I do think there's a soft spot or at least some importance placed on them for the Awakening DLC alone

Whitewings would be good, though I don't know what they could or should get refine-wise. Some kind of callback to Triangle Attack could be neat. Otherwise, I'm personally waiting for Beruka and Kagero above all else. Beruka keeps getting new useful options (first the Halloween axe, now SS4), but I'm hesitant to go all in investing in her when they could drop a prf with Guard on her for all we know. It's already a good thing I didn't throw the Hack-o-Lantern on her like I was about to, since SS4 already seems superior. I'd hate to kill my Surtr and find that to have been a waste. I don't know what Kagero would get, but I'd like to see her not remain strictly inferior to Sothe with his prf. Both have their own named weapons in Fates, so I assume it'll happen eventually, but who knows when.

After picks like Nephenee, Celica and Saber, I have no idea what they might actually do next at this point.

Is that really a good thing though?

It's an explanation, which is more than IS gave Surtr. It would have been enough for me to even just say, "the fire dragon blood was especially strong in him and corrupted him abnormally bad even for Muspell royalty, so he went full evil destruction mode." But I guess IS preferred to keep it as simple as possible and not even go into it.

  5. He was fine being the pure out-of-control evil bad guy type. He mainly lacked backstory, but with the simplified story IS seems to be going with I wasn't really expecting that anyway. Was he always that evil? He managed to have 2 daughters, so maybe he wasn't as bad at one point? Or maybe he's just an evil anomaly, since one of his castle or tap lines is like "none of the previous rules of Muspell have stoked the flames as much as I." It's kind of like how Garon was pure evil too at the time of Fates, but we also know he was taken over by the dragon/goo monster at some point so he wasn't always that way.

I do agree the fake-out "you actually didn't kill me" thing near the end did just felt like dragging things out, though.

I believe I have also managed to secure tier 16, I had a defence result a few hours ago so with 20 hour grace period there shouldn't be any Aether drops for me.

Speaking of Camilla, there was a really good flying team I encountered this week using three Camillas and a F!Grima bunched up in the north-west corner of a map I can't quite remember, I actually meant to screenshot it since I figured it might be useful for yourself, but I forgot to do once I'd entered the map. Approaching it was difficult because I'm sure at least one of the mage Camillas had a warping skill, and they all had Goad Fliers.

It's a good thing I had that 80 lift buffer, since I already got my defense loss for the day and I end at exactly 6000.

Haha, that's alright, I appreciate the thought. I actually tried to imitate that one posted above (but FGrima instead of DC Laegjarn) since I had the units for it, but it got trashed easily by the person who just attacked me. Anything without a dancer seems like a free win, unless your units end up ill suited for the match. The person funnily enough brought their own mirror Camilla team and sniped my regular Camilla with their Adrift one. It was just cleanup after that.

I might just go back to trying horses and healers. I wish I had Firesweep Bow on my Lyn to make her more dangerous, but I don't have the fodder.

  7. Closed out the season VERY close. 6,080 score, which means even if I lose a full defense again today I should still stay in tier 16. Since I needed to be perfect in my 2 matches today for this to work, I was kind of worried about what I'd run into. Luckily I got pretty easy ones for a change.

Another season with Adrift units is nice so I can keep having bonus stats on my Camilla. She's been putting in massive work. It's going to be me annoying to do team building when they change, since I'd rather keep her on my teams if I can. Especially for nuking all the bonus stat Surtrs we'll be no doubt be seeing soon. As much as I like my Laegjarn and Laevatein, I don't think they can fill her blade tome-using shoes. Laevatein can actually hit harder, but I won't be able to buff her nearly as easily. Laegjarn will fit better into my teams as a flier, but Wary Fighter Surtrs will probably be too much for her.

  8. @DehNutCase @Ice Dragon I guess I'll go for it and give her Atk/Def Link, since at the very least it may be nice on her for defense team usage in AR or Arena if I try her there. Still probably the best use of an extra Laevatein when I'm not planning to +10 her.

I actually have 2 spares, so now I need to think who might want Odd Spd Wave or if I should just +1 her(to show some favoritism, more than the +1 atk/hp that will do little) Like @XRaysaid, I don't really find the Wave skills very appealing with their consistency issues, but maybe I could save it for an infantry mage like Tharja, since I only have 2 Spd Tactic bearers among my barracks.

Most units need their B slot to function. The only units who can function without it are one shot nukes, Brave nukes, Player Phase nukes with Desperation on their Weapon, and Enemy Phase units with Quick Riposte on their Weapon.

Links and Feints are just bad for performance in my opinion since the C slot can do the same thing via buffs and Ploys.

It's too bad, since it does mesh perfectly with her assist but I'll likely have those buffs on her from allied C skills anyway. I feel like I should throw it onto her anyway since I can't imagine anyone else possibly using that Link skill better, but I feel bad killing a Laevatein for it. (even if merging her hardly accomplishes anything either)

  10. I can't decide between Laegjarn or Laevatein. I like them both about equal (and both have been really lucky to show up 3-4 times for me).

It's funny that Hrid's the least notable in the story even next to Gunnthra and Ylgr (if you count Loki as Ylgr time), and he's got the most votes.

  11. In practice, how good is a Link skill on Lucina with her Future Vision?

I've got a spare Laevatein I could use to give her Atk/Def Link, but I don't know if it'd be better to just go with Desperation or something instead. I know it synergizes great on paper, but it feels like most teams will use buffs anyway, so needing to get buffed via using her skill seems like it could end up unnecessary. And then she has no Desperation to engage futher enemies with if needed. I just got her, so I haven't used her enough to really tell what works best yet.

I am probably gonna be occupied with smash and I might not unlock all this forging bonds EX accesorries, I hope I can manage it somehow.

Do what I'm gonna do. Smash that auto battle button with some stamina potions on one of these 2x points hours.

    Or Destiny Child. Or Langrisser

I'd try that Langrisser game, but it's not Fire Emblem.

  13. I can't imagine they'll redo elements for anybody that's already released. We're probably just going to get a new set of 4 light and 4 dark heroes, if they stick to the same structure as before.

I think it's a good thing, since this can mean 8 more legendary hero slots and it means legendary banners will continue for the foreseeable future. More monthly unit reruns and more chances for legendary Alm, Xander, etc. that people want to see. That is of course assuming that these blessings are indeed legendary hero-related and not implemented in some other way. Considering the 16 character chart of the previous 4 elements seemed so planned out, it's still possible these could be added in some weird way related to the book 3 story or something instead. It's probably just more legendaries, but at least the possibility makes it interesting either way.

This might be purely anecdotal BS, but I feel like I get fewer Defense results when I do my fights later in the day, like closer to end of the game day. No Defenses at all is just as good as a successful Defense, if your luck goes that way.

I always wait until close to reset to do any matches if I haven't already had a defense result that day. I figured it would limit the chance somebody rematches me in time before the day rolls over. I've only managed to avoid a loss one day this week(yesterday), which was just dumb luck. I woke up to no results yet so I "hid" until the end of the day to do my runs and managed to not get any. Unfortunately I woke up to one already today, so I just went ahead and dumped my aether.

  15. RiBNDz1.jpg

Unless I can avoid being attacked on one of the remaining days and continue to play perfectly, I think I'm going to miss hitting tier 16 by a sliver thanks to the defense losses dragging me back down. (only avoided one day so far since luckily nobody attacked me)

  16. I'd be happy if they just kept Shigeki again. I liked him every since his original and Spring Camillas, but he did a great job on Book 2 as well. If they have to switch, I guess Asatani Tomoyo seems like a good fit. Shigeki's work meshed well with Kozaki's characters, and I think Tomoyo's work would similarly fit alongside those two.

  17. A Camilla from my one green on the free pull. (I actually needed more Savage Blow fodder)

I could pull for Helbindi who I skipped before or Laegjarn merges but I must resist temptation and save for Christmas. And if I really wanted to pull on one of these 2-man banners right now, an extra Surtr would probably be the best use of orbs.

  18. 3 minutes ago, DehNutCase said:

If you have 5 unit slots already I don't imagine Surtrs will ever be a problem, since they're hard-countered by having dancers. (I'll need to play the mode more to find out, but teams of 5 should be able to fit 2 dancers easily.)

Regarding defense forts, for pure scoring I'd argue that defense upgrades are more important than offense upgrades----being able to win 5 defense matches is 400 lift, which is a whole tier.* (My own defense fort is going to stay level 1 +0 until my offense fort is literally maxed out, but that's because I'm planning to play this mode extremely casually.)

*This will change if we get Aether Regen upgrades, though, since lift inflation would devalue the 'effective' lift you gain from having a good defense.

I do have 1 team with 2 dancers, but Adrift Camilla is the only red on it. She can probably still handle them either way, but better safe than sorrry. (usually I don't use 2 dancers since Loki takes the 5th slot to cripple like 80% of enemy teams)

Ideally it might be, though defense also involves a lot of luck. You could invest and still keep losing, or get wins with no investment at all. I've seen easy-looking teams get defenses while tougher ones get none. I haven't managed a single successful defense yet that actually counted as first of the day, so I need all the help I can get there. But at the same time, ensuring offense remains consistent is something more within my control.

considering I'm working with mostly +0 units with a fort disadvantage, whereas they can probably get +10 units with fort parity or even fort advantage.

I didn't buy the offensive healing building and so I'm used to enemies with +4-8 stat advantage at this point. Aside from the high stakes if I actually mess up against them, it's pretty fun running into +10 Adrift Corrins with 45-55 in every stat +buffs and still overcoming them.

I'd almost just upgrade my defense fort again to hope I can help my defense chances more since that's the only place I've been losing lift, but at the same time I really don't feel like dealing with all the +10 Surtrs with +8 stats we'll see soon. I'm currently trashing them with Adrif Camilla, but when she's lost her bonus stats and they gain them they may be more of an issue.

P.S. are people really running in to that many Rein-Lyn teams that are all the same? Im top 10k and still feel like the variety isn't any worse than the tier 19.5/20 arena I inhabit. Maybe I'm lucky.

I'm in the top 700 and virtually every single team has some combination out of Rein/Veronica/B.Lyn/Cecilia. The exceptions are pretty much only whale teams with stuff like +10 Adrift Corrins or other +10 Cav healers rocking Atk/Spd Solo and Pain. A few instant special Ophelia teams get a mention as well.

I feel like if they toned down the competitive element it'd be more fun. Letting people play more than twice a day would be nice and some way of making defense wins less important, or completely unimportant, might make people more willing to experiment with theme maps than just falling back on the irritating ones.

I agree, I wish it didn't feel as high stakes as it currently does. This feels like one of the most fun modes we have on a good day, but it can be stressful trying to make sure you never make any mistakes or you cripple your progress both long and short-term. You also have to play every single day. It's not like arena and AA where you can just spend some dueling swords and clean up your run at the end of the week if you want. I don't mind some competitiveness and challenging pvp content, but it's feeling a bit heavy as-is for a more casual mobile game.

Maybe it's just me, but I even spend like 30+ minutes when I run into some cancer or whale maps just to make sure I do not screw up and lose any lift progress within my control. I feel like I'm forced to take the game a bit too seriously at the moment.

Wow, I love fliers, so I was tempted to get her, but decided that Summer Tana and Aversa would suffice for now. Now I kind of regret that and am not sure I can resist next time, she sure does look good.

Nice showcase, really well done. You demolish everything with Camilla, meanwhile I struggle with four units, but it was sure nice to see these annoying units get crushed.

    Keep it up.

If you run the same kind of blade tome build on Summer Tana or another of your red mages, you can probably do the same thing I did with Camilla. The dancers just need WoM and that 2 are able to survive and whittle down/kill that blue manakete. You might only need 1, but that's just how it worked out for me. Stuff like Celica with her refine and Special Spiral AOE Ophelia can also pull it off. (though you might not have those, as I don't)

I definitely had a hard time trying to use a more typical team before I went full blade + dancer gimmicks. The reinforcements + ploys/panics were ruining my day for a while.
