  1. Gosh I feel like I burned my best 2 gen 2 ones on the First Genealogy thread, but here is another sub, and normal set:

My Substitute for the Substitutes Banner:

Femina, Jeanne, and Amid, with Sharlow as the TT and Johalva for GHB (because the horseless Axe boy is clearly the substitute of that choice)

My Second Second Generation Banner (AKA Genealogy's Thracia Banner):

Delmund, Ced, Corple and Athena with Hannibal as the TT and Arione as GHB (I honestly wanted to add Arthur and Tinne here, but Corple and Hannibal were needed once I realized the theme of this Banner)

Sigurd is broken dialed up to a full 11

I hate to have to break this to the Sigurd is broken crowd, but without the Tyrfing (chapter 5 exclusive and literally broken when acquired) he has serious problems with mages with his average Mdef of 4.25 at max level. With the forests/mountains and wind mages of chapter 4, and difficulties of personal healing in FE4, it is VERY difficult to solo generation 1 with Sigurd. Seth has no such weakness, and soloing his entire game is trivial. Sigurd is amazing and broken... but not Seth levels of amazing and broken.

  3. Man I feel the need to add a banner of fill those noted holes in the current suggestions

Linoan, Shiva, and Karin, with Conomore as TT and Amalda as GHB

What a horrifying (yet depressing accurate) depiction of Thracia's future in FEH.

I kind of wish people would stop proposing Altena or Travant (and before them Ishtar and Julius) in a Thracia banner.

Despite really wanting Altena and Travant (plus Arione, but nobody remembers him...) to be in FEH, I couldn't agree more. We should see more Thracian units in Thracia banners.

  4. I hope you are enjoying FE7, it was the one I started with a I still think its a great game.

I assume fighting at TA disadvantage with bad luck is a bad idea because of deadly TA crits?

TA doesn't really effect crits much, you do have to hit to crit so the accuracy change (and the +/- 1 strength could make the difference when tripled) does effect it, but it isn't huge. Honestly I think someone has overstated the value of Luck a bit here. There are a fair number of people who call it great due to it playing an impact in accuracy, avoid, and crit avoid, but it only plays a small role in accuracy/avoid, and while the crit avoid is nice, there aren't a lot of enemies with high crit rates.

How do Fliers compare to Cavs, apart from their weakness to bows?

I think JSND Alter Dragon Boner has covered a lot of the main points rather well, I just want to add a few things. First that I also didn't like Pegasus Knights on my first couple playthroughs as well (although they have grown into my favorite unit type), and you might end up liking Wyvern Knights better, they fly and are weak to arrows, but tend to have higher Strength and Defense although with lower Speed (but with higher Con to compensate) and embarrassingly bad Resistance. I find Flyers help a lot when the game is pushing me to reach some side objective before a thief/brigand can make off with all the loot, plus they work well when doing rescue shenanigans, or when switching the equipped weapon of someone who has already acted through trades, and then taking the rest of their movement to reach safety after doing so (Cavs can help with both of these two, but being able to ignore terrain makes it easier for flyers).

If Archers aren't important, how are mages and other ranged units?

The issue with Archers is that they have no way to attack or counter attack at range 1, people who only wield swords only also get criticized for how difficult it is for them to attack/counter attack at range 2, due to there being only two weapons (four in hector mode) in the entire game that give them 1-2 range, and at range they have their strength halved (although they do target resistance instead of defense at range to compensate). Even Lyn and Rath, who when they promote can both use swords and bows, have the issue of relying on the magic swords if they want to counter at both ranges during enemy phase. Meanwhile all magic is range 1-2, and you can buy the basic 1-2 ranged lances and axes at numerous armories (although the better versions are fairly rare). Mages also have the advantage of a lot of basic enemies having pathetic resistance (although the bosses of this game have unusually high resistance values in general). If you haven't already, stocking up on Javelins and Hand Axes might be a good idea.

So my goal should be to optimize crit chances by raising skill/weapon stats and weapon rank (also to make it less random).

Well... I am not saying its a bad idea to try this, but there is only so far you can push your crit chance, and often just having a heavier hitting weapon/character is what you need to more reliably take down basic enemies. Guy is a good example for why this isn't always the best plan, unless he gets lucky with his Strength growth (or you give him the only energy ring in Eliwood mode) he has a hard time doing the damage he needs to reliably one round enemies unless he crits, where as a powerhouse like Raven tends not to need the crit to one round, even if his crit chance is significantly less.

    14 hours ago, mampfoid said:

Effectiveness in Heroes means 1.5x damage, so 2x is decent.

This really isn't as good as it sounds, the multiply only applies to the weapon's Strength + TA, not the actual characters strength (at least in this game)

Thanks! Binding Blade is the successor of FE7?

Technically FE7 was designed as a prequel to the Binding Blade, so the Binding Blade is an older game, but the story takes place after, following the story of Eliwood and Hector's kids Roy and Lilina

You mean Erk? Well, he is still at level 1.

Erk tends to get overshadowed by Pent who arrives far latter in the game as a promoted unit with amazing bases, high staff rank (which is hard to get with those who only get staff use on promotion) and using the same magic type. You should also be getting Lucius and Canas (if you reach his gaiden chapter) fairly soon, who use the other types of magic and are fairly good. Lucius tends to be a glass cannon, and dark magic has some cool effects, which makes Canas fun to use.

Have fun Mampfoid, this was a great entry to start with, and hopefully it gets you to appreciate the heroes of the Blazing Sword.

  5. Lets start with the generals of Grado:

Duessel the Obsidian, Selena the Fluorspar, and Glen the Sun Stone, with Caellach the Tiger's Eye for TT, and Riev the Blood Beryl for GHB

    The Heroes of Jehanna :

Gerik, Tethys, and Ewen, with Ismaire as TT and Carlyle as GHB

    The Guardians

Dozla, Saleh, and Syrene with Rennac the reluctant Guardian as TT, and Morva the fallen Guardian as GHB

  6. By far the most important version of threads inspired by GrandeRampel I bring you that most ignored, least beloved of IS's fire emblems in the eyes of FEH, Thracia 776. With a grand total of 8 characters in Heroes attributed to Thracia, with 3 of them featured prominently in Genealogy (Leaf, Nanna, and Finn) and two alts bloating the count one could even argue there are only really 3 truly Thracian characters in heroes. Now it is time to defy the odds and dream big, worry not about how realistic the banners be (realism leaves when we imagine a Thracia banner even occurs) shot for the stars and create whatever wild and crazy banners you fancy.

The rules: 3-4 in the banner itself plus TT and GHB, No alts for pete's sake

Let me start with three amusing Banners:

    The Father-Daughter Banner with:

Dagda, Tania, Galzus and Mareeta, with Sara as TT and Manfloy as GHB (yeah I know Manfloy is Sara grandfather not father, close enough)

    The unique weapons banner:

Orsin and the Pugi, Tina and the Thief Staff, Dean and the Dragon Lance, Asvel and the Grafcalibur with Fergus and the Beo Sword as TT and Reidric and the Lopto sword as GHB

Plus the Memeiest banner of all:

the Marty Party, Ronan the Mage Killer, Shanam the sham, with five star Xavier as the TT's 50,000 pt prize, and Kempf as the the memeiest GHB...IN AMERICA

  7. Lets start with the Dragons of Shadow Dragon:

Bantu, Nagi and Xane with Gotoh as TT and Medeus as GHB

The Necessary Heroes banner 1 (sorry for the snark Etrurian Emperor, but your post is the inspiration for this one)

Astram (with the last of the three regalia of Archanea in tow, and his ties to both George and Midia give him a bit more than blank slate territory)

Kris [Male] (I know people like to forget the first player avatar, but he is too important to New Mystery to ignore forever)

Gotoh (have people really forgotten the last minute overpowered character Archetype? Plus he was fairly critical to the plot as well)

    with the TT as

Kris [Female] (This may seem redundant, but having a character for both gendered versions is a bit necessary for player generated characters)

    and the GHB as

Gharnef (The first evil wizard character who was the real antagonist of this game)

I actually had a few more that needed adding:

    The Necessary Heroes banner 2

Nyna (who is entirely playable and the lord for the first and fourth Settalaview Fire Emblem maps...and technically playable on the last maps of FE3&12)

Yumina and Yubello (Talking about the Prince and Princess of Grust together here, they are the catalyst for Lorenz's rebellion that starts the plot of new mystery, and even in FE 3 they get characterization with Yumina as the spunky princess who puts on a strong face, and Yubello as the shy and timid prince who fears combat)

    with the TT as

Elice (Marths sister, lover of Merric, wielder of the legendary Aum staff, the one who stayed behind to ensure

    and GHB is

Lang (This dick deserve his place in heroes for being the fire emblem villain that you love to hate)

  8. I think I will associate my banners in a different way:

    The Flyers of Tellius:

Jill, Haar, Marcia, and Tanith for the main banner, with Sigrun as TT and Ashnard as GHB ( I know there are 4 in this banner, I just wanted to include Sigrun and lets be honest she is the one who would be dropped if there were any fewer slots)

    The Knights of Tellius:

Astrid, Geoffrey, and Kieran for the banner, with Fiona as TT and Petrine as GHB (I know I have missed Makalov, he could be added to make this a 4 banner but lets be honest no one wants Makalov)

    The Armored Knights of Tellius:

Gatrie, Brom, and Meg, with Taurneo as TT with Bryce as GHB

    The Sword Lords of Tellius:

Zihark, Edward, Lucia with Stefan as TT, and Bertram as a sword cav as GHB

And of course the best Laguz banner of all, one that would make all other Laguz banners reek of anticlimax or waifu baiting

    The Monarchs of Laguz:

Nailah, Tibarn and Caineghis, with Naesala as TT and Dheginsea as GHB

  9. Lets go with a flyer emblem banner:

Farina, Fiora and Heath, with Vaida as GHB, and Eleanora (Eliwood's mom, and yeah its a longshot, w/ alts I would pick Florina or possibly Lyn) as a flying healer TT

Edit: I wanted to add a few more themed banners

Heroes of Pharea: Lowen, young Bartre, Isadora with Harken as GHB and Marcus as TT

Heroes of Ostia and Sacae ( I know weird mix but both would need alts for a full roster otherwise)

Oswin, Rath, and Guy, with Uhai as GHB and Leila as TT

    The with alt versions:

    Heroes of Sacae:

Rath, Guy, alt Lyn (Wander of the plains Flying on Florina's Pegasus with the Mani Katti) Uhai as GHB and alt Karla (Protective mother Karla infantry w/ staff)

    Heroes of Ostia:

Oswin, alt Matthew (Vengeful Spy, infantry with a colored dagger with art depicting him as an assassin), alt Serra (Beloved Bishop, infantry with Blue magic), with Uther as GHB and Leila as TT

  10. Alright I've gotta few more good banner suggestions:

    The villain's of Geneoology:
Chancellor Reptor , The Avaricious Lord Langobolt, and Queen Hilda (for obligatory waifu), with Manfroy as the GHB, and buck the trends with Travant as TT

    Advisors of Geneology:

Oifey, alt Lewyn: hero from a distant land Holsety of the winds (Green dragon infantry), General Hannibal, with Aida as the GHB, and Shannon as TT

ALL right I will give the Waifus of Geneology:

Brigid, Aideen, Larcei with Lamia as GHB (I know obscure even for me, but the leader of the all female mercenary band deserves it) and Leylia (I know a repeat but a free dancer and female w/charm fits the banner idea...)

And for of course Husbandos of Geneology:

Lex, Azelle, Delmund, with Ishtore as GHB, and Ced for TT

  11. Why not the substitute banner? Rodolbahn (I know it will probably be Radney instead, but Rodolbahn is too good of a name), Leylia, and Dimna in the banner, with Hawke the bold as TT, Asaello the hitman of Connote as GHB. Let these unlikely heroes shine...

But if you insist I ignore this beautiful banner, then Faval, Shannon, Corple (w/ Valkyrie) for banner with Travant in GHB, and Brian of Dozel in the TT, that way the rest of Genealogy's legendary weapons get to join Heroes.

  12. Acacia Sgt I think we have derailed this topic enough, you might find the conquest of Grado believable, but I don't. The way the game undermined its plausibility in 5x, and then the poor way they handled Frelia's army (and Grado's as well) in the story did not help in this regard. In truth drawing attention to these armies (and the lack thereof in 5x), without explaining what they were doing, or contributing, or even where they are, just made it feel even more like Ephraim and co. were doing it all on their own, and for no good reason (whereas FE9/10 at least explained why there were solo missions, and which ones even were). I think having Soren fulfill a similar role in the FE8 story that he did in FE9/10, by adding context through explaining the role of the armies and PCs in the battles to come, telling harsh truths to the Lord about the PCs abilities, and explaining why they need the help of the Frelia army, would have made the whole thing more believable and interesting. This is my last word on the matter in this thread.

Do you have a character you would like see moved to a different game?

  13. Unless you are trying to defeat Julius without Julia I think Dew is the way to go. Dew give both kids better or equal growth rates in everything but HP, Dew gives both of them bargain, which is especially good on Faval, it lets him use that bow of his more without breaking the bank, and gives Patty the Sol skill. Alec gives Patty the pursuit skill before she promotes (Faval and promoted Patty get it as a class skill for free), and gives them the Nihil skill, which is of limited use with critical hits locked behind a skill (and neither of the children being vulnerable to effect weapons even without it), and the only enemy sword skill in second gen being a single instance of sol. The big place it is relevant is in facing Wrath, which Julius has on the final map, so if you are trying to take down Julius without Julia trivializing that fight, being immune to his wrath crits make Faval a much better unit with Alec as a father.

  14. One big difference would be chapter 5x, where it is just Ephraim and his three cavaliers, and changing that map into an event that resembles something possible (which I think Soren's advice might have accomplished) would go a long way toward making the story of Sacred Stones better. This display of how Ephraim and the party can basically do it alone undercut any good the Frelia army's presence in the story might have done.

14 hours ago, Acacia Sgt said:

If anything, him being there would only make it a bit more believable.

This goes a long way towards making the story more palatable, when the event of the story feel believable it helps us maintain that suspension of disbelief that lets us engage with the story. One of the biggest problems with Sacred Stone's story is how obnoxiously Gary/Mary Stu like the lords were, and that made it so much harder to care about the characters the story centered around. If the conquest of Grado is something believable instead of the only possible due to the narrator's love of Ephraim that would make the story better. Having Soren to remind Ephraim, and by extension the player, of the fact that Ephraim and Seth are not (and cannot) do this alone, it makes them feel like the have flaws and are creature imperfect enough that they might even resemble humans that the player can than identify with and care about.

  15. Raven is great and worth using on almost any play-through. Canas is also a good choice, but I will warn you his stats are a bit deceptive. The weight of dark magic (and his mediocre speed growth) makes it hard for him to double when using the interesting utility magics like Nosferatu or Luna (although his basic Flux tome tends to do fine with his Con), I find this makes him a good recipient of a Speedwing or Body Ring. I think both are worth using, and if you do not like how they are turning out they can be easily replaced by one of the prepromotes you plan on using.

On 10/9/2018 at 7:47 PM, Corncake said:

    Sain that's promoted pre-Eliwood

I will warn you that this can only be done on Lyn's hard mode, otherwise the normal mode tutorial forces you to waste the Knight's Crest from Lyn mode on Wallace.

Also just out of curiosity do you plan on streaming or lets playing (either video or screen short version) your play-through?

  16. I think you are worrying way too much about the end game here. Athos is literally only available on the last chapter, and while Pent is great you might find you want to use magic or heal during the first 14 + gaiden maps of Eliwood mode before his arrival so you might think about using Erk/Lucius/Canas at least early on, and a healer like Perscilla (or Serra if you are allergic to horses or something). I will also say that Lowen is entirely usable if Kent or Sain get RNG screwed and you feel the need for a replacement, same with Fiora as a replacement for Florina (I am just remembering my first Hector Hard Mode playthrough where Florina still had her base 5 strength at level 12 and making the jump to Fiora despite my original team plans). Raven is also good if you need some more power before the powerhouses you have chosen for your team show up. Honestly FE7 has weak enough enemies that benching some people you needed to use early on will not hurt you, so feel free to use whoever you need to early on even if they aren't part of your end game plans.

  17. Scarlet, but for very practical reasons. I didn't realize until a bit latter into the game how balanced the genders were in this game's standard dating pool (meaning all the 1st gen characters who are capable of marrying someone other than the MC). They were perfectly balanced, such that if I married one of the women, one of the men would have no one to marry. Thus I had 3 options: marry one of the children (and I find the idea of marrying any of the children kinda gross), miss out on recruiting one of the children (and I wanted all of the maps and all of the characters), or marrying outside the standard dating pool. The two ladies outside the standard dating pool in Birthright were Scarlet and Reina, and of the two I thought Scarlet was the better option.

  18. Ayra-Lex - Probably the best Lex pairing, and my favorite pairing for Ayra. The combination of double xp and the great physical growths this pair gives make for a powerful pair of sword fighters (yeah speed growth is a bit meh, but the sword fight bases are so high and sword weights so low that it hardly matters). One thing you might want to think about is trying to arrange the kill on Changall with Lex so that Ulster inherits something good,  although this can be tricky due to weapon triangle disadvantage.TLDR Good choice

Aideen-Midir - This is an easy pairing that should result in a good Lester, just make sure one of the good bows (the Killer Bow or Hero Bow) reach Midir before inheritance. Don't worry too much  about how Lana turns out, healers can always find a way to be relevant while a physical unit with a magic father takes a lot of work to be useful in any way (unless they wield swords...). Besides even with a physical pairing like this she will still have a higher magic growth (32%) than your planned Nanna pairing and have that vital pursuit skill in the event that she needs to fight after promoting. TLDR Good choice

Lachesis-Claude - Delmud is going to take a lot of work to be any good, a magic sword might work for him (This pairing is tied with Delmud's highest magic growth of 42%) depending on your luck with growths. The pursuit ring or brave sword are going to be needed to let him double, and the lack of any inheritable swords from Claud really hurts here. Additionally it means the legendary Staff is unusable 2nd Gen (although this honestly isn't that big of deal and very few Claud pairings even make it possible). Although worst comes to worst he can just use his charisma skill to support near by allies. That being said the extra staff rank really helps Nanna, and while her Magic growth is still embarrassingly bad (25%) this is technically her second highest magic growth possible. TLDR Delmund will need help to become a combat unit with this pairing

Sylvia-Alec - This pairing has clearly been done at the advice of someone who knows about a certain conversation between these two, so have fun with that; although I haven't seen the new translation's version so I would be interested in seeing it as well. As for how the children will turn out... not great but not many pairings help these children and honestly the roles they have makes it so any pairing will keep them somewhat relevant. Stats don't matter much on a dancer especially with how powerful dance is in this game, as long as you keep her protected, and honestly the only pairing that make the dancer better is no pairing at all, because the replacement is the only way to get more people with the Charisma skill, one of the best support skill in the game. The son has the issue of coming late to the game as a level one priest so the best way to help him is to make him more quickly level up; the unpaired has the double XP skill and access to the only Berserk Staff, while a Claud father gives him max Staff rank and inheritable staves which lets him spam powerful staves from safe distances for huge amounts of XP (plus access to the legendary staff). TLDR this pairing has a fun conversation but doesn't help the kids much

Fury-Dew - I haven't actually seen how this pairing would work out so be warned most of this is theory crafting. Ced will suffer without a magic father, although Dew is the least detrimental physical father, and the bargain skill will help him buy the tomes he needs due to lack of weapon inheritance. Sol, Luna, and Astra have strange restriction in this game where only unmounted sword locked units can have it, so neither of these children will inherit it. The physical father helps Fee the most, but unfortunately most of her growths come from her mother, and the Pegasus Knight promotion gains giving 0 str and 7 mag, which makes it hard to have a physical Fee work well. Dew in particular gives her very round 40-50% growth in all of her physical stats (literally tied for 2nd highest growths in everything but HP, her worst possible growth, and Magic), and Dew doesn't give any combat skills that might make a physical Fee more powerful. I fear this might lead to a hampered Ced and mediocre Fee that excels at nothing, but I am not entirely certain.  A magic focused Fee can be made to work all right for two reasons, first she has the weapon ranks to wield magic swords, and second she gets staves on promotion. TLDR It is hard to make a physical Fee work, and the attempt will weaken Ced

Briggid-Jamke -  In my experience this pairing looks a lot better on paper than it actually is. It gives a lot of great SKILLS on Faval, and his highest strength growth, but his skill stat has embarrassingly bad growths, and the legendary bow he gets has surprisingly bad accuracy so he needs all the skill he can get (which makes him a good candidate for the skill ring if you aren't using it to give one of Ayra's kids a stupidly high Astra activation rate). Patty tends to suffer without any good inherited weapons, and her starting equipment while good is a very specialized sword with the highest (non-broken) sword weight in the game (which hinders both the skills she inherits due to both having an activation rate based on attack speed), and while she gets pursuit and A rank swords on on promotion, reaching that level is difficult without help from her father. That being said I like to have Jamke paired up with someone for story reasons. Patty is the only child other than Ayra's children capable of inheriting one of the sword skills(Luna/Sol), and both Holyn and Dew give fairly significant benefits to both children. Holyn gives Faval the best possible skill growth and gives Patty the extra benefit of B rank swords on top of weapon inheritance, while Dew gives amazing growths and the bargain skill, which is incredibly useful on anyone with a legendary weapon. TLDR It may give the kids good skills, but also glaring weaknesses

Tiltyu-Lewyn - Well this breaks the 2nd Gen. Lewyn's legendary wind tome makes men Gods and getting it this early on in the 2nd gen trivializes a lot of the early game. While the kids lack pursuit, Lewyn gives skills that let them double in other ways, and they get the kind of stats to see those skills activate fairly often, and give them both better access to the best type of anima magic. I personally prefer Fury-Lewyn and Tiltyu-Azel, but it is hard to argue with any God of the wind. TLDR good job you broke it...Second Gen is broken, so have fun with any pairings you want

I just want to end this off with three ending notes. First do not worry too much if some of your pairing aren't perfect, some of the best 2nd Gen units aren't related to pairing at all, and you can get through the game even if you get stuck with all the replacement characters. Second you might want to consider pairing Azel with someone, because the ending with a living child of Azel includes the only mention of the Fire Emblem in all of Jugdral. Finally can you link to where you are streaming if/when you decide to.

  19. What I think I will call the odd event run, seek out the alternate dialogues most people do not see like:

Have Azel die before Arvis talks to you in the prologue

    Kill Ayra before taking Genoa

    Kill Sandima before recruiting Deirdre

Have Dierdre die before taking Verdane/Augustria castle (pro points if you can manage the alternate recruit conversation for Dierdre and still have her die before taking Verdane)

    Kill Eldigan

    Kill Daccar before conquering Silesia

Talk to Aida before killing Reptor

Get the Arden Secret event where he has a wife (because who does that)

Have Seliph visit the village with the meddlesome grandfather

    Conquer Sophara/Isaach after killing Dannan

Have Julia die before taking Rivough/Alster/Meath/Thracia

    Kill Altena as an enemy

    Conquer Luthecia after killing Hannibal

    Conquer Chronos after Rados

    "Kill" Julius in chapter 10

Kill Julius with Seliph while both Manfroy and Julia are alive (make sure Seliph is dismounted when he lands the killing blow to avoid a glitch)

Plus get the ending where Seliph is only surviving King/Queen, and Grannvale basically stays as the continent spanning empire.
