  1. Okay, here’s an actual summary because no one’s posted one and because I like Marth’s story a lot, even though it’s pretty simple. I tried to be brief while still hitting the high points, but it's still a little long. I bolded the important names.

The TL;DR is basically every other post so far, they’re all correct. Enjoy:

    Spoiler

In Part 1, Marth, the prince of Altea, is forced to flee his home when it is betrayed by an allied kingdom and invaded by several nations led by a Dragon man (the Shadow Dragon, Medeus) who wishes to enslave humanity. Marth takes refuge on the island of Talys with a small platoon of knights and grows up.

He eventually leaves the island to retake the continent and defeat the Shadow Dragon, since he’s the only one who can wield the sword Falchion (the only weapon that can defeat Medeus). He brings his knights, some mercenaries from Talys, and the Princess of Talys (Caeda) who is also his love interest.

Marth and Caeda are apparently very charismatic and regularly recruit new faces to help save the continent. These include thieves, sell swords, nobles, clergymen, and more. The most important ones are these:

    • Merric, Marth’s childhood BFF and future brother-in-law, he is important because he is the mage who gets the tome able to defeat the sorcerer Gharnef, who revived the Shadow Dragon and started the whole mess
    • The Prince of Aurelis, Hardin, who becomes one of Marth’s “closest friends” (supposedly, it’s not really on screen, but you’re supposed to assume it)
    • The Princess of Macedon, Minerva, her brother, Michalis, killed their father and took their younger sister hostage to force Minerva to fight for her country, but she joins Marth after he rescues her sister
    • The Princess of Archanea, Nyna, as the princess of the largest country (same name as the continent) she is also in charge of the Fire Emblem, a special shield, and gives it to Marth as a symbol

There are lots of other neat folks like Jake, Barst, Navarre, Linde, but they’re less plot relevant, moving on

With the Fire Emblem in hand, Marth retakes Archanea, then returns home to liberate Altea. Then he runs a few errands, such as rescuing the Progenitor Dragon Loli, Tiki from Gharnef, and making sure he’s got some orbs that are actually not that important until Part 2

Then he heads on down to finish the war, pitting him against Camus, leader of the Sable Knights of Grust who was romantically involved with Princess Nyna and helped her escape after Archanea fell. Although Nyna loves him and he loves her, he refuses to betray his country, which is under Medeus’s control, and he is “killed in battle” (yeah right)

Finally, Marth’s army fights Minerva’s brother, Michalis, Merric defeats Gharnef, and with the Fire Emblem and the Falchion, Marth finishes the Shadow Dragon. He proposes to Caeda and that’s that.

In Part 2, several years have passed (like 3 probably). During that time, the people of Archanea want Princess Nyna to marry, and because she knows Marth is in love with Caeda, there is only one other eligible noble bachelor out there: Hardin, Marth’s “good friend.” Hardin becomes the emperor of Archanea and is super happy all the time. Then he finds out his wife doesn’t love him, (she is still in love with/in mourning for General Camus) and he’s bummed out 😞 As it turns out, he’s been a little jealous of Marth all along, since Nyna gave him the Fire Emblem and Marth also got credit for defeating the Shadow Dragon, and is hailed as the hero of Archanea. He gets depressed.

Meanwhile, Marth is still engaged, and gets word from Hardin that he needs to go do some clean up around the nations that were allied with Medeus. He says, “okay, after all Hardin is my good friend, so I’ll go do that.” He goes and does that, but he becomes very uncomfortable as he realizes that the people Hardin have put in charge are abusing their power and mistreating the citizens of these nations.

Marth decides to chat with Hardin and work things out over tea, but Hardin says I HATE YOU, and as the Emperor of Archanea, declares war on Altea. Marth receives the Fire Emblem from Princess Nyna in the mail implying that something grave has happened and she’s in trouble, but Marth has no way to communicate with her.

As Marth is chased around the continent by Hardin’s army, he starts to round up the old posse. Princess Minerva joins him and so does a man named Sirius (who is DEFINITELY NOT Camus). He learns that a couple of important clerics have gone missing, including Marth’s sister and Minerva’s sister. He finds the friendly dragons again, grabs the Falchion back, and collects some of the orbs that weren’t so important in the last part. Those orbs are actually a part of the Fire Emblem.

Now the gang heads back and starts reconquering. They rescue Altea, then head down to Gra and recruit the Princess of Gra, Sheena. They finally battle Hardin, who was possessed by one of orbs Marth needs for the Fire Emblem. The orb was given to him by Gharnef (big surprise) and Hardin dies.

Finally they fight their way to the Dragon’s Table where Gharnef is reviving Medeus and a bunch of other crazy dragons. Marth and co defeat Gharnef and find the missing clerics possessed and guarding Medeus. Nyna is one of these clerics. With help from loved ones, the clerics are woken from their possession and Marth defeats the Shadow Dragon actually forever this time.

Marth gets married and the situation on the continent goes like this:

    • Princess Nyna of Archanea realizes that Sirius is Camus and is still alive, but he refuses to admit it because of nonsense from Gaiden/Shadows of Valentia. He disappears and she decides to go look for him. She abdicates the throne of Archanea to Marth.
    • Princess Minerva of Macedon never wanted to rule and ended up with a rebellion on her hands when she tried, so wishing to live out a quiet life with her sister, she abdicates the throne of Macedon to Marth.
    • Prince Hardin of Aurelis is dead and his older brother, the king, cedes control of Aurelis to Marth because he is old and has no heir.
    • Princess Sheena of Gra realizes that her nation and Altea were once one nation, and in order to restore peace and atone for their repeated betrayals, she abdicates the throne of Gra to Marth.
    • The Prince and Princess of Grust, who Marth rescued early in Part 2, are underage and both have interests they wish to pursue outside of being royalty, so they abdicate the throne of Grust to Marth.
    • Dolhr? I hardly know her!
    • Dolhr basically doesn’t exist anymore because I guess the cultists are gone?

And so, Marth becomes the sole ruler over all of the continent of Archanea and is dubbed the Hero-King.

    The End.

It could be an Assist Trophy if you want.

I’m assuming this comment means we can start with

Smash: Lyn, upgrading from assist trophy (I wouldn’t actually want another FE swordsman, but at one time getting Lyn would have been nice)

Fire Emblem Three Houses: Claude (on a Wyvern)

    Hollow Knight: The Knight

    Breath of the Wild: Urbosa

    Cuphead: Cuphead with Mugman Alt

    Bastion: The Kid

    Transistor: Red with the Transistor

Skyrim:  Playable Paarthurnax I guess? I don’t know

    Dark Souls: Siegmeyer of Catarina

    Octopath Traveler: H’aanit

Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee: Blue with Alakazam, Rhydon, and either Pidgeot or Aerodactyl

    Pokémon Sword: Sirfetch'd

Super Mario Odyssey: The Band because, I don’t know, suits

    Undertale: Undyne

    Crawl: Mind Squid

    Gris: Gris (the girl)

    WarGroove: Valder

    Aegis Defenders: Clu

And finally capping off the list,

Civilization VI: Teddy Freaking Roosevelt, whose down B is to call in the Rough Riders and also a bear.

These are ones I use for DS games and SNES games. You have to download them, so they're not in-browser emulators (I assume that's what you meant?) but they're perfectly safe and free.

We can't help you get a ROM for FE3 or FE12 but here's the translation patch for FE12 once you have one. Not too hard to apply and the instructions are all there.

Here's a general thread for translations that has an FE3 patch in it:

Good luck!! Both are super fun games!

  5. Just do a run of any game with FE4 trading rules. Keep track of the money each character has individually accumulated and they can only share with their A/S supported partner. All regular weapons and items have to be sold and bought back. Special items get a trade penalty where you add/knock off money from the giving/taking unit's total cash.

    Berwick Saga

    A game with:

    - DSFE's quality of life. It somewhat worsened later on, in my opinion.

    - FE11's gorgeous HUD. Seriously, I know everyone hates the graphics of the DS titles, but you have to admit that at least Shadow Dragon's HUD is great.

    - FE12's excellent difficulty scalling. Offensive stats greatly increase, but defensive stats do not, so turtling is 9 times out of 10 not viable - you have to focus on erasing the enemy before they erase you.

    - FE6's engaging map design. Maybe make the maps a little smaller tho. You can also call this point "FE12 without the ambush reinforcements".

    - FE5's capture system and easy-to-salvage cast. Sure, some people are better than others, but you can use everyone with relative ease, thanks to low caps and scrolls. True balance is hard to conceptualize and harder to reach, so let's aim for the next best thing. As for the capture system... well, I just find it fun to try and spare some bosses here and there.

    - Berwick Saga's way of handling horses. You have to purchase them for pretty steep prices and they can die on you.

    - An artstyle that doesn't make me hate the characters at first sight. For me personally, that would be... really, anything that isn't pre-FE5 or post-FE12. What can I say, it's just my opinion.

    - Please, go back to 2D. FE has gained nothing but stiff animations, slowness and visual glitches from the jump to 3D. Let's make this more like Berwick Saga, shall we?

I was basically just going to write this but you beat me to it, so instead I'll tack on a few story things and call it good:

Story does matter to me, but I'm okay with just a plain old classic FE plot, especially if the characters and relationships are explored a little. I think a blend between the supports from GBAFE onward and the map conversations from FE4 and FE5 would be cool. Keep the same sort of idea of as supports with a sequence of conversations, but make them event/map locked AND support locked. On that note, I think smaller casts tend to work better for this kind of thing since you can pretty much keep track of all the relationships and everyone tends to feel like they're present in the army for a reason.

Related to the story thing, bringing back full permadeath would be nice, where characters generally don't just get gravely injured when they lose a fight. I think one of the most awesome things about FE5 (and a few others) is how much variety you can have in cutscenes depending on who is alive and who is not. If Finn dies, he's dead. That's all there is to it. Just in general, an increase in character responses to other character's deaths or maybe some bigger story changes depending on who is alive or dead would make permadeath more relevant and would be a part of my ideal Fire Emblem.

The variety of map objectives in FE5 and FE9. Going with the discussion above, for me, story/gameplay integration is usually what makes me feel strongly about a game. The use of map objectives that make sense with the plot sells a game's story to you on a personal level, no matter how plain it might be, and it's not that hard to make a plot that allows for a variety of map objects. FE5 really pulls this off with the objectives shifting along with the story. Also, I just think more map objectives are fun.

That's basically it. Those story things plus the gameplay and interface stuff SR said and that's my perfect Fire Emblem.

Y'know, if you have THAT MANY PROBLEMS with the GBA games, make a patch with all of these implementations, then play it yourself.  Stuff like editing weapon/item usage/MT is easy enough.

Just wanted to second this, and link you to FE Builder. It's a really clean editor that's super easy to use, especially for little things like stat increases, weapon uses, money, ect.

Go wild and post what you come up with (if you want). I'd probably try it!

  8. Just want to start with a note about the Flame Emperor reveal: I may not be in a huge majority here but I played Verdant Wind first, and in that route the Flame Emperor reveal is not clear at all. Like maybe you can guess because even with the voice distortion, the Flame Emperor sort of sounds female, and the whole emperor and fire motif makes it pretty clear that the Flame Emperor is connected to Adrestia, but my best guess on my first run was that the Flame Emperor was one of Edelgard's parents. I wonder if anyone else playing Verdant Wind experienced this or if I'm just dumb? Because as far as I could tell there were really no clear hints that the Flame Emperor was Edelgard in that route.

Anyway, I think your thoughts are pretty apt. Honestly the story is alright overall, some routes do things better than others (Blue Lions Blue Lions Blue Lions), but I think everyone more or less agrees that Black Eagles is a little weak as far as plot goes. I played it last and I was really ready to get into Edelgard's motivations and background and finally save her, because it was really sad having to kill her in every single other route. But then I played Black Eagles and yeah. If you're expecting much explanation about why she's doing this or what her deal is, prepare to be disappointed.

I also really agree with your thoughts about Edelgard's initial assassination plan. Honestly, things could have been handled a lot better if it had been an order to capture instead of kill, but the way it was, it was just a little weird.

Also, Three Houses is the first game in the series where an Earth Dragon has harbored some degree of good will with humanity.  Because before it was just Medeus and his legion of hateful followers who all sought to bring an end to humanity, as opposed to Cichol becoming an instructor and a lead figure in the main religion that guides mankind in Fódlan.

To be fair, Medeus started out kind of on the humans' side. Or at least on Naga's side. He was the only earth dragon who did not degenerate because he was willing to assume human form. It was only after he watched the other manaketes be mistreated by humans that he went kind of crazy. 🙂

  10. Honestly I can only reiterate what other people have said, except to say watch out for Chapter 21. It's big and ugly and you have to do it within 30 turns to unlock the true ending. My first run of Binding Blade was single-handedly ended by this chapter because I had trained the wrong guys and couldn't promote some of them because of the dearth of promotional items. I don't recommend playing it blind. It's a good time and very manageable on normal once you know what you're doing, but it can definitely be rough if you're unprepared (or if you're dumb like me).

  11. I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned Chasing Daybreak. It's a really cool piece of music with the chorale bits, and nothing beats hearing it for the first time post-timeskip. Honestly I kind of feel like it's the reason the timeskip comes out kicking as hard as it does. That theme has a great sense of tone. Between Heaven and Earth is also really solid.

That being said, my favorite track is probably Tearing Through Heaven with Paths That Will Never Cross in second because those are such bops. (Plus the title "Paths That Will Never Cross" reminds me of Minerva's dialogue with Michalis in Shadow Dragon Chapter 22 so THAT'S NEAT)

The final map themes are kind of in a category of their own since they're so fantastic. Personally I order them with God-Shattering Star on top followed by Funeral of Flowers and then Apex of the World.

  12. If you're going to get it anyway, you can just get it whenever you have the funds. I'm waiting for wave 3 myself because that's when the new characters get added. As I understand it, it's just bonus quests and outfits right now, no paralogues or story stuff. Also, it seems like they don't have firm dates for the DLC releases (unless something has changed). They just have deadlines where each wave will be released "by" that date, but the second wave came early so who knows?

  13. Enjoy it, it's a great time! GBA era Fire Emblem is definitely some of the best (FE6 can be a little rough though).

I guess it's also that there's less downtime bogging you down.  You're always going from mission to mission.  As much as I do like 3H, the flow is mostly just "do mission >> do menial tasks >> fight in skirmishes >> do mission".  That's alright for a bit, but that kind of gameplay loop can feel tedious at times, particularly in repeat playthroughs and especially after playing for quite a long while.  With a lot of other FE games, particularly the earlier ones, it's just straightforward "complete the chapter", the only thing bogging you down being your own play style.  There is a certain virtue and beauty in that simplicity.

I really feel this. I enjoyed 3H a lot, but I'm not sure the whole calendar system was the best idea, at least not the way they implemented it. I feel like it made the pacing a little weird sometimes. On the other hand, it obviously lends to that feeling of a lot of time passing and I guess you can just skip it anyway.
