  1. That was more a balancing issue than a bad idea in and of itself. That's why you make sure to handle the idea right, so that no character has an overwhelming advantage over everyone else. Shoot, it doesn't even take a gimmick for that to happen (see: Brawl Meta Knight).
  2. But sometimes, designing Smash movesets with the current setup feels like trying to jam a square peg into a round hole. The Action button offers enough wiggle room to make a lot of potential characters' movesets more "comfortable" to design, if that makes sense. To use X as an example, the dash he uses in his series currently has two viable executions: simply being his dash animation, or being his side special. While I could live with either of those choices, the problem with the first is that X wouldn't get a standard running animation like in his own games (which is the kind of detail this series has become quite keen on) and the dash would have to be continuous, and the problem with the latter is he doesn't get to use a special weapon for his side special. With the Action button, the problem is quite handily solved, as X can use that to dash like he does in his own series. Although, to be fair, I guess they could give X a unique dash ability where he starts with the burst of speed, then segues to a slightly slower but conventional run, allowing you to double-tap repeatedly to make X go faster. But man, is that going to be murder on the joystick. A dedicated Dash button for X would just feel better, you know? Same deal for Vile: while you could incorporate his three weapon slots within the current moveset structure, it would be way cooler and more satisfying if he played more akin to his MHX self, with three different attack buttons, one each for shoulder, arm, and leg. The attack button uses Vile's arm weapons, the special button uses his shoulder weapons, and the action button uses his leg weapons. It's kinda like how Min Min was designed to simulate the left hand-right hand playstyle of ARMS. And really, X and Vile represent what I'd consider the plausible extremes for the Action Button's complexity. X gets a simple but useful speed boost while Vile gets a third set of attacks.
  3. Vivi isn't my favorite iteration of the Black Mage, but I'll take him over Quina Quen, Eiko, or Amarant. Speaking of Black Mage, I could handle them adapting the other five jobs from FF1 like they did the Warrior of Light, but I still think a quartet of true OCs from their own world would do well as the lead protagonists. Though since FF loves it some lead couples, I guess they could trim it down to a pair of OCs, like a guy and a girl, maybe with a chocobo and moogle as companions.
  4. Maybe it started with one, but after all the DLC, HW had 31 fighters total, which is about on par for your average DW game if I'm not mistaken. I know about the whole Capcom situation; it's a crying shame, the Oracles and their villains would have made fun playable characters. I'm aware that FF Warriors would probably end up being basically Dissidia Warriors, but the prospect of only getting the lead hero and villain of each game bores me as those characters already have plenty of exposure, I want to see more secondary characters join the roster. Like, I get wanting to fight hordes of monsters and soldiers as Cloud and Sephiroth, but what about Barret and Tifa, or even the Turks? How about playing Locke, Celes, and Shadow as well as Terra and Kefka? Or Garnet, Steiner, and Vivi as well as Zidane and Kuja? Heck, some of those characters are already part of the Dissidia roster, so if FFW turns out to be Dissidia Warriors, they at the very least can use the roster from, say, Dissidia NT, which has a total of 38 playable fighters, after DLC is taken into account, and just so happens to have been developed by Team Ninja. Regardless of the character selection, a Final Fantasy Warriors just feels so freaking obvious. And the series has so much material that would work perfectly for a Musou title. How has it not happened yet?
  5. Hyrule Warriors had 5 OCs total: Lana, Cia, Volga, Wizzro, and Linkle. The four I've suggested basically stand in for the heroes of FF1, who would essentially be OCs anyway since they don't have a developed personality of their own (see Dissidia's Warrior of Light). Thus I'd suggest that FF1 be repped by established characters such as Princess Sarah and Garland.
  6. Wait, are you referring to DI making the gameplay more imbalanced? If so, I apologize for misunderstanding. EDIT: Wait, again: Smash uses DI itself, it just uses simple directional inputs like Up + A or Side + B, not junk like Forward-Back-Forward-Punch. So, I guess we should say complex DI combos make the game more imbalanced.
  7. Making the game harder to play makes it more balanced? I don't follow. And, keep in mind the Action button wouldn't always equal more attack options. For some characters, it could represent additional defense options, or mobility. It's basically a button that can do whatever it needs to for a particular fighter's gimmick or build, much like Shield + Special does now but with more control flexibility (you wouldn't want to use shield + special to dash, for instance, while the Action button would be perfect for that). Basically, the Action Button gives moveset designers a little wiggle room. Need a few more attacks? Want your character to transform? Just need a cool dash move? The Action Button's got you covered!
  8. As long as it's optional, like is the case with Ryu, Ken, and Terry, I'm fine. You still have the simpler control style in Smash. I just don't care for fighting games where pressing the stick in multiple directions before pressing a button is the only way to use special moves.
  9. I agree with Sakurai: special inputs - especially directional input combos - are horrid. I vastly prefer the simplistic style of Smash, which ironically also has far more depth than something like Street Fighter or MvC thanks to each fighter having a diverse moveset. Easy to learn, hard to master, as it goes. There's a reason Smash is the most popular fighting game series in the world, and it's not just the all-star cast. I'm not sure how giving a function to a spare button equates to special inputs, though? If anything, the Action button would push more in the simple direction by letting the player do things that would currently require a combination of buttons, or would take up a special slot. For some fighters, the Action can be as simple as a brief speed boost, like dashing for X and Zero. For others, it could be a third attack/special button, like extra items for Link, leg weapons for Vile, or kicking for Talim. Maybe you'd like Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard to have unique D Specials? Then their shared Action can be changing Pokemon. That's the beauty of the concept - it's flexible and can be tailored on a fighter-by-fighter basis. It's as simple or complex as you want it to be.
  10. I recall wanting Daroach in since Brawl. Until Return to Dreamland, he was arguably the fourth most relevant character in the whole series, being the face of what was then "Modern" Kirby. I'm really surprised they haven't added any Kirby characters in Smash 4 or U. I'm all for Sonic getting more fighters, villains included. Metal Sonic would be an even better choice for an echo than Shadow, but they both have developed some distinct abilities of their own so they don't have to be Sonic Echos per se. But I'd be cool with Metal Sonic being the Dark Samus to Sonic's Samus. For SSB6, I was thinking they could announce Metal Sonic and Amy Rose in the same video; first Metal kidnaps Amy like in Sonic CD, prompting Sonic to rush to her rescue, then while Sonic and his metallic double tussle, Amy gets free thanks to - I dunno, maybe Cream and Big? - and helps Sonic fight Metal by whacking the latter upside the head with her Piko Piko Hammer. Cream and Big could also be announced as part of Team Rose, together with Amy. In most cases, I'd want a particular FF villain's heroic counterpart to get in first, but yeah, Kefka could work well as this clownish mage who goes all "God mode" for his Final Smash. Would his D Special involve poisoning opponents in some way? Could even just be the Bio spell. One of his taunts would have to be his signature laugh. Ultros as a playable character could be...interesting, to say the least. I'd just as soon see him get in as a boss, myself. As a nod to his lecherous tendencies, he could appear as a boss for female characters like Terra and Tifa, not to mention Peach, Zelda, Zero Suit Samus, etc. But hey, if you got a moveset idea for Ultros, I'd be interested to see it in the moveset topic! Me personally, Garland is the FF villain I most want next. It doesn't feel right not to have content from the very first Final Fantasy on NES in Smash. And Garland has some awesome moveset potential thanks to the Dissidia series giving him a transforming sword and magic based on the Four Fiends. His Final Smash would involve transforming into Chaos, of course. His crouch would have to be a reference to his sprites. And need I even mention "I, Garland, will knock you all down!" as a taunt? Of course, left up to me, most of the Final Fantasy games would be repped by at least one hero and villain apiece. Final Fantasy is, like Mega Man and Sonic, one of those series that's expansive and significant enough that I think they deserve more presence in Smash. FF is the definitive classic JRPG series for most of the world, after all.
  11. Considering that you have buttons for jumping, attacking, specials, shielding, and even grabbing, I'd argue Smash is not a two-button fighter. And I'd argue fewer buttons actually makes gameplay more complicated, not less, at least if you want a fighter with depth. An extra button can actually help simplify gameplay by giving you more room to spread functions around, requiring fewer button combinations to memorize. And if that extra action varies in complexity by fighter, that just helps diversify fighters further.
  12. Ever since Melee, we've had three actions commonly mapped to the four face buttons: Attack, Special, and Jump. Jump often gets mapped to two of the four face buttons. But, what if the fourth face button could serve its own function? Recently, while designing movesets for X and Zero, I found myself struggling with how best to implement their Dash ability from MMX. Should it be their standard dash? Should it be a side special? In the MMX games, dashing is often mapped to a separate button. Since MMX4, the four face buttons just so happen to have filled four unique functions: Attack, Special, Jump...and Dash. Well, what do you know, MMX might just have had the ideal face button setup for Smash for a long time. But of course, not every fighter necessarily needs a "Dash" button like X and Zero. What if this fourth face button action varied depending on which fighter you're playing? Perhaps it could play a role like Shield + Special has in the past. Perhaps it could be used for transforming or tag-teaming in cases like Sheik & Zelda, Pokemon Trainer, Pyra & Mythra, etc. Some fighters might be able to access a third set of moves with it (like, say, Vile, who uses three different buttons to attack with his three weapon slots in Maverick Hunter X, thus the Attack, Special, and Action Buttons could each operate one of his three weapon slots in Smash, or Link who could use items like the Pegasus Boots and Power Glove in what would effectively be a second set of specials). Currently, many players rarely use that fourth face button in Smash, I imagine, since it shares a function with one of the other three. But what if all four face buttons had a distinct function? Maybe in Smash 6? Or a big update for SSBU? What are your thoughts?
  13. Popular enough they got fanart, not to mention got added to Star Allies as playable characters. Besides, popularity isn't the only factor in a fighter being added to Smash, as Captain Falcon, Ness, Wii Fit Trainer, and Piranha Plant can attest. Sometimes they throw in obscure faces for the fun of it, you know? I'm just saying, Kirby could easily fill his own sub-roster with all the distinct and colorful characters he's racked up over the years. Getting back to the villain topic, while we're not at the point of adding two villains for any third-party series yet, I could see Vile joining Smash once Sigma's in there. He is the MMX series' second-best known villain after Sigma himself and one of the most iconic villains for the franchise as a whole. MHX gave him a play style that could work pretty well for Smash, with his shoulder/arm/leg trio of weapon slots that each support three types of weapon system which in turn offer a choice of five different weapons, adding up to a grand total of 45 weapons, almost three times the number of attack slots his theoretical Smash moveset would have. His up attacks would use shoulder weapons, his neutral/forward attacks would use arm weapons, nd his down attacks would use leg weapons. This means Vile would be the second fighter after Yoshi whose U Special is a projectile rather than a recovery, mitigated by a more effective midair jump (in Vile's case, a jetpack, which he also uses to dash). The one exception to the U-Shoulder/NF-Arm/D-Leg rule is Vile's signature Electric Shock Round (the weapon he used to stun X in MMX), which is fired from his shoulder and is his N Special. The Shock Round will automatically aim at the nearest fighter in front of Vile. On top of his arsenal, Vile could spawn in a Ride Armor that features its own moveset and is heavy, strong, and immune to hitstun, but has limited stamina and will explode once it takes too much damage. Once the Armor explodes, Vile can't get another one until he respawns. Vile can exit the Ride Armor manually by holding up and jumping, but doing so risks another fighter jumping in and taking control. Vile is the only fighter who can use a special move while piloting a Ride Armor: his Electric Shock Round.
  14. What's more, they have a gimmick almost exactly like Pokemon Trainer in Star Allies itself. I'm honestly surprised we haven't seen more Kirby characters join Smash since Brawl. Maybe Sakurai took all those accusations of Kirby favoritism to heart and has avoided pushing the Kirby series since to avoid coming off as biased? In which case, that's another reason I feel sorry for the guy, since he played such a big role in Kirby's creation in the first place. And as it so happens, Kirby has built up quite a Rogue's Gallery from which to pull villain or at least antihero candidates: Marx, Daroach, Magolor, Taranza, Susie, the Mage Sisters...I hope they all get added to the roster at some point, Star Allies showed off just how much fun they could be.
  15. Mega Man X I considered using one Maverick from each of the eight MMX games (Magma Dragoon from X4 in particular), but I had difficulty deciding on reps for most of the games, felt the original 8 were the most iconic, and knew the original game is often considered the best anyway, so I opted to focus X's board primarily on X1 with a few references to later games, namely Zero (whose enhanced form debuted in X2), Axl (who debuted in X7 and is already in as a Spirit), and Ultimate Armor X (debuted in X4 and returned in 5, 6, and 8). That way it keeps things simple. Mavericks from later X games could always be added as Spirit Events, much like the Navigators. X's Spirit Battle isn't part of the board, but like Zero and Axl's Spirit Battles, it's updated to replace Mega Man with X as the Spirit Fighter.
  16. Hard for me to say what I think will be next, but I know I'd love to see a Final Fantasy Warriors that revolves around a set of four original protagonists traveling from their world to various other Final Fantasy worlds and interacting with various heroes and villains from those worlds, the majority of which are playable. As is usual for Musou-style games, the playable warriors battle hordes of monsters, enemy soldiers, and bosses. The four original protagonists along with a handful of other warriors could have access to job changing and different weapon types, while the majority are job- and weapon-locked. Weapon types include both general and personal. General weapon types available to multiple warriors include Axe, Bell, Book, Bow, Boomerang, Dagger, Hammer, Harp, Katana, Rod, Spear, Sword, Staff, and Whip. Personal weapon types exclusive to specific warriors include Fiendish Greatsword (Garland), Merc's Greatsword (Cloud), Gun-Arm (Barret), Long Katana (Sephiroth), Fixed Gunblade (Squall, Seifer), Blaster Edge (Rinoa), Shotgun (Irvine), Machine Gun (Laguna), Twin Daggers (Zidane), and Morph Gunblade (Lightning). Magic elements include Fire, Ice, Lightning, Earth, Water, Wind, Holy, and Dark, along with possible others like Life, Poison, Time, and Gravity. Life would be a new element designed to represent not only restorative magic such as Cure but also magic related to plants, fungi, and animals.
  17. Yes, Byleth is novel for using a lance and axe in their moveset, but that's not really a gimmick per se. Of all the DLC fighters thus far, Byleth has been the most "vanilla" (which no doubt has contributed to their divisive reception among the fans).
  18. With the exception of Byleth, every FP DLC fighter so far has had some manner of gimmick to help distinguish them: Joker - Has the Rebellion Gauge and Arsene Hero - MP meter and Command Menu Banjo-Kazooie - Powerful Side Special with limited uses Terry - Input commands not unlike Ryu, and the series' very first Back Special Min Min - Left arm and right arm mapped to attack and special buttons respectively, as well as the ability to change the right arm Steve - Mining materials and using them to craft weapons and tools Sephiroth - Winged form that triggers at high enough damage Pyra & Mythra - Ability to transform between two fighters (previously seen with Zelda & Sheik) So, what kind of gimmick would Dixie offer? I mean, sure, she could be justified based on popularity alone, but they'll want to do something interesting with her, else she'll feel like a fighter who should have been base roster (because quite frankly she should have been). In X's favor, he could have not only Special Weapons (with potential for a better implementation than Mega Man) but also a Light Capsule that can grant him Armors and the ability to charge many of his attacks, particularly his buster (which by my reckoning could cover his neutral, F tilt, N air, F air, B air, and possibly his dash, to simulate how his games play) and, while armored, his Special Weapons, most notably his Specials (which themselves could vary based on what Armor he's using). As for a Namco Rep, a Soul rep would probably be the next most fitting option. Talim is the most popular character in the series, so she's the most likely candidate, but Mitsurugi would be a cool pick too due to his being a Samurai. I'm researching Soulcalibur gameplay as of SCVI, and learning about mechanics which I think could be implemented into Smash. Far as I can tell, SC doesn't have distinct aerial attacks the way Street Fighter and Fatal Fury do as there isn't a jump button per se, so they'd have to exercise some liberties for those as well.
  19. Though Crash and Shantae are my top two picks, I could also see Dixie Kong and X as DLC fighters. X has some pretty easy choices for gimmicks: he can use Special Weapons with energy, he could don different armor parts to alter his abilities, and he could charge his X-Buster and Special Weapons. Basically, he could play like a more advanced Mega Man. Plus, his series has lots of prime candidates for Spirits and music. It helps that they have a model of him to use already thanks to Mega Man's Final Smash. Dixie's a little tougher. She has her ponytail spin, but that could easily be adapted to her U Special. What other gimmicks could she use? Animal Buddies? Tag-teaming with her sister Tiny? Picking up and throwing stuff with her hair?
  20. Fine choice! I suggested such myself in the OP. We've got Mario, Bowser, and Sonic in Smash, it's high time The Eggman completes the quartet. If not for Sephiroth stealing his thunder, Eggman would have made a great first villain DLC fighter. Though X and Zero aren't in Smash yet, I'd like to see Sigma join the roster one day as well. Unlike Wily, who relies on Robot Masters and machines to do the fighting, Sigma is more than capable as a hand-to-hand combatant, having fought X and Zero directly and used a wide variety of weapons over the course of eight major installments. His most iconic weapon is the beam saber he used in the very first game, and I expect that's what the majority of his moveset would be built around, though his claws from X2 and his scythe from X4 are pretty memorable as well. I certainly wouldn't mind if they pulled a K. Rool and made his specials each represent one of his notable boss battles.
  21. Eh, while I'm not against adding more sword-users to the game, I understand a desire to see weapons besides swords in smash. They have yet to add a dedicated axe or spear user, the closest we've gotten being Byleth. We also don't have a lot of straight-up mages who use rods or staves (despite the fact Zelda would be a perfect candidate for one what with Magic Rods being a thing in her series and all). So, I get why some fans roll their eyes over "yet another sword fighter". Me personally, I want more cartoony mascot-type fighters like Crash and Rayman to round out all these basically human fighters we've been getting, though I of course also still want Shantae, who offers the novelty of a Middle East-inspired belly dancer with a ponytail whip and magic powers.
  22. A Soul Calibur fighter would be appropriate. Bonus points for the fact Link guest-starred in SCII for GCN. Back in 2015, Project Soul and Namco held a popularity poll for the SC series' fighters. These were the top ten results: At this rate, I really hope a FP3 is on the way, as there are just too many good candidates left. But, sooner or later the FPs will have to come to an end so they can work on SSB6. Though I could see a mobile game coming in the future, too. That would make sense given Nintendo's recent forays into the world of mobile games. And though I know gacha is rather infamous over here in the West, it would make sense for a Smash mobile game. Fighters, costumes, equippable weapons and spirits, custom specials, you name it.
  23. A couple weeks back, I posted a topic speculating on remakes of Pokemon Diamond & Pearl for Switch, following the pattern first established by FireRed & LeafGreen for GBA and followed by HeartGold & SoulSilver for DS and Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire for 3DS. A few days ago, what should be revealed but Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl? So now, it only stands to reason that we'll eventually get Pokemon Black & White remakes, probably within five years or so. Will it be for Switch? Or will we see a new, hopefully even better system launch by that time? But of course, we can't forget that Pokemon Generation IX will likely have started by then. BWR could very well be part of Gen IX itself. This topic is thus dedicated to speculating on not just BWR but Gen IX as a whole. And like with any future Pokemon generation, that means exciting possibilities like new Types, new battle modes, and even new gameplay mechanics. So, what would you all like to see in Gen IX? Let's speculate! Ever since Gen V brought us away from Japan-inspired regions and explored other parts of the world such as New York, France, Hawaii, and the UK, many fans have eagerly discussed how different states, countries, and groups of countries could be interpreted within Pokemon's world, such as Texas, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, and Scandinavia. Since we just left the Europe-inspired Galar with colder climates, I figure someplace warmer is in order. We have yet to visit an arid region within the mainline games, so someplace based on Egypt and/or Arabia could be quite fun. Or, we could revisit the Americas and look to Texas or California for inspiration. But honestly, I think a Greek region would offer the most excitement due to its highly prolific pantheon of gods, monsters, and heroes which would lend themselves well to Pokemon. Just imagine a legendary trio based on Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon. Perhaps they could be Flying/Electric, Ground/Ghost, and Water/Steel, respectively? I hereby propose the name "Xander" for this region, derived from "Alexander". I now prefer "Theos", as a nod to the region's focus on legendaries based on deities. They could introduce a new Beast type, which would be given/added to Pokemon with beastly qualities (such as Arcanine, Luxray, and Pyroar). They could introduce a Petrified status associated with the Rock-type, in anticipation of a Pokemon based on Medusa or Gorgons in general. Some past Rock-type moves could acquire Petrification as a possible side effect. Petrification could work similar to Freeze, but with the added property of making the Pokemon Rock-type (and therefore vulnerable to Grass, Water, Ground, Fighting, and Steel-type attacks). A new item would be added that cures petrification. Rock-types are immune to petrification for obvious reasons. Some ideas for Pokemon: That's it from me for now. Feel free to share your own ideas for Gen IX, be they for a Greece-inspired setting or something else!
  24. Hopefully the battles won't be slow again. That was honestly the number one issue with DP since it would crop up far more often than a weak story or barely-present NPCs. That, and the dearth of Fire-Types. The good news is, if there are any issues with BDSP, they can at least distribute patches to fix those issues now. Not like Litwick's line are the only Pokemon allowed to be Ghost/Fire. And they're based on candles and chandeliers rather than lanterns per se.
  25. So, last year, Taiwan saw the release of Rockman X DiVE, a neat little gacha platformer game that lets you play different characters from the Mega Man X series as well as guest stars from Classic, Zero, ZX, Legends, and Battle Network, all of whom are capable of equipping weapons in any of five categories: Buster, Melee, Machine Gun, Sprayer, and Cannon. As an avid Mega Man fan, I am ecstatic to try this game out myself, particularly because many of my personal favorites are among the playable lineup including Alia, Layer, Leviathan, and none other than Iris, the queen of all Mega Man waifus (feel free to fite me online when DiVE comes stateside). The fact that someone as peaceful as Iris gets to tote gatling guns and sabers in DiVE makes me wonder: Could DiVE influence Super Smash Bros. by way of providing material for future playable MMX fighters? Like, could Iris, given her popularity, one day join Smash's venerable roster, adorably laying waste to foes with Floating Mines, Peaceful Wish, and an arsenal of weaponry? I won't lie: I would love to see most of DiVE's playable roster make it into Smash one day, and then some. And SSBU currently has one specific piece of content from a gacha game: A remixed theme from Fire Emblem Heroes. So, the gacha genre has one very small foot in Smash's door already. Heck, DiVE itself actually plays a lot like Smash, thanks to its pvp capacity and sidescrolling format. And I could see Nintendo putting out a Smash gacha game for mobile, with different fighters, skins, and Spirits as gacha prizes. I know the very idea may make a lot of you wretch and seethe with contempt, but like it or not, the gacha genre is popular and successful, and a series as popular and content-rich as Smash would fit gacha like a glove. But I digress. The main subject of this topic is: would you like to see anything from Rockman X DiVE get into Smash, either in SSBU or a future installment?
