Well, I kinda grew up with the GG version. I didn't own a Game Gear, but I had a friend who had it. Neither of us could easily beat the first boss because of those damn randomized balls. They bounce the same way in the SMS version, but in the GG version, they have different velocities and heights making it kinda unpredictable.

GG version is harder. The first boss was an absolute bitch due to small differences compared to the pansy it is in the SMS version. Great boss music though. SMS's never really clicked with me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTkrus3xhSc

So I beat Sonic 2 on the Game Gear. Feels good. I did beat the SMS version prior to this, but that was awhile ago.
