    I think this point has some merit, but it depends on what kind of media you're consuming. There's a lot of media out there that desperately needs some world building, time for minor characters, etc. However, if someone is creating a piece of media, and their goal is to create something that could be considered literature, I truly believe that every single thing in that piece of media should contribute to the story and messages at hand.

    The first piece of literature that I experiences this with was a book called Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison which I was forced to read for AP Literature in highschool (many years ago). That book had a ton of random stuff, but for the first time in my life every metaphor was explained to me in a way that actually stuck, and it made me realize that the story was this beautiful constructed and meticulously crafted message where every word in that book serves towards the greater narrative. Not every story is like this,  but many notable stories, say Neon Genesis Evangelion, are constructed in a way that *almost* every single piece of dialogue and camera framing and voice acting is serving the purpose of the themes of the show (lots of times comedy is added to shows to lighten the mood, which doesn't really progress the narrative). I'm not saying that stories like this are objectively the best for everyone, but for stories that are too focused on singular people or singular threads, there are plenty of ways to explore new people and ideas while still tying everything back to the narrative at hand. Think something like Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood which has tons of variety in its characters and settings, but no time is ever wasted just doing something random.

    May chaos take the world.

    How to make something feel extra artificial. Life isn´t hyperfocused on a single thing (i think, but I´m only 1/8billions). The idea that everything must contribute, is in my eyes born from the limitations of the medium - a book can only be so big, a film only be so long etc and not the telling of a story by itself.

    You won´t ever truly know why the artist [Disclaimer: term used broadly, describing people making stories] thinks something belongs in their creation.

    Edit: To be clear here, this isn´t an opinion formed from consuming media, but observing discussion about media, where people all too easily, in my opinion, jump to the idea that something was superfluos, unnecessary, didn´t add anything, and more of the likes of phrases, indicating the obsolence of something the author decided to put where it is.

    Noone gets to judge that, especially not when the majority of opinions seemingly conflate the enjoyment/satisfaction they derived from consuming said media with the reason it might be there in the first place - which would require intimate knowledge about [Everything the Author TM].

    Edit 2: But, I suppose, much of this is witnessing discussion Social Media style and not a more proper forum.

    Edit 3: And Edit 2 probably puts quantitative doubt on the wholt thing.

  2. Add the idea that everything happening in a story must contribute to the story, to the pile of garbage that ought to get taken out the back and the idea that everything must tie together, both of which is a sign of a weak spirit yearning for a complete, safe and sane world.

    Put random shit in stories! Makes it greater than woohoo, you´re gods favorite chosen specialz and the evil guy is actually your mom.

    I have a huge fondness for Setsuna. Her voice lines melt my heart and she's a fun project. I know everyone's always raving about archer Mozu, but I prefer Setsuna. She's not even that bad. She has boatloads of speed, so all she needs is a stronger bow to alleviate her lower strength.

    Agree, but Setsunas problem is less Mozu... and more so the pineapple with a special bow. Making Mozu an archer in Brithright... I mean yeah, it´s still Archerzu, but eh. Hard, eh.

    According to our lord and savior, Google, the highest flying bird is Ruppell's Vulture, which can reach heights of 11,000 meters. While Everest is 8,000 meters. So, yeah, birds above Everest are possible. Which is pretty freaking wild. Still I doubt Ruppell's Vulture could carry Ruppell up there, and without oxygen masks and a good parka, the riders are still going to feel some impacts of those heights.

    Yah, but that´s a birb... imagine a whole ass HORSE trying to fly up there. Need an oxygen mask for horse and rider.

    How would this change make choices more interesting in any way? It sounds like you just limit the amount of choice you have by removing the ability to use units with skill stats and weapon levels that differ from eachother. A unit that has more weapon options but is less reliable vs a unit with more restrictive weapon options but is more reliable with chances for extra damage is the interesting choice this change would removing with this change.

    ... by elaborating on the weapons system, for example? We have Bronze -> Iron -> Steel -> Silver as a baseline but we also have sidegrades and variations of this, like the heavy weapons (I think PoR,RD and smach weapons in Engage). If we take Bronze -> Iron -> Steel -> Silver and +MT/-Hit;-MT/+Hit as a base, that´s at least 8 weapons; then we can have even more specialized weapons, specifically high hit ones with low might and reverse etc. And then, weapons that influence Procc Rate (Read: Sword with Quixotic Effect.) Then we could think of consummables for secondary stats for example, +10hit? Maybe weapons which act one wepaon rank higher than the unit might be able to use, but very low uses.
    I was pretty clear, that such a change would have to be thorough, as it does concern a stat which touches a lot, but not very strongly.

    Re: Not all stats are equal.
    I just want the games to punish hyperfocs on Movement for once. Oh, you moved too far ahead within X turns? Damn, ambush spawn trap. Enemy units that actually hold weapons, that can threaten horses and fliers (and I don´t just mean bows). I think the Kitsune map fucking over any horse based army is splendid
    An isolation mechanic, which lowers your units evade/crit-evade/hit/crit when surrounded by too many enemies. Maybe extended to having too many enemies too close affecting units... obviously this would affect the enemy negatively too.
    Boots and horseshoes and... whatever the fuck you´d give fliers (drugs?), affecting the entire army for X amount of maps and the effect disappearing after said maps.
    Fliers as subject to air currents... which can change, obviously.
    Mountains should probably affect fliers as well... I ain´t heard of no gawdamn birb on Mt. Everest (but maybe I just don´t listen)

  8. Not an inherent trend to media in itself, but the great majority of fans and the degree to which headcanons and the actually presented media itself are being intermixed. I made a very angry comment about something similar in the General Unpopular Opinions thread.

    I am so fucking thankful, that SF only goes through hyper-activity when a new game comes out, or someone throws shade towards their favorite boy Dmitri or their gal Edelgardand and that the shittier less interesting discussions can be steerad clear from thanks to individual topics... as bad as it might be to say, as a member of this board, I so very much appreciate it´s... low tempo, is how I´d put it.

    I mean skill/dex is an important part of the accuracy calculations. The formula in Sacred Stones (per https://serenesforest.net/the-sacred-stones/miscellaneous/calculations/) is Weapon Hit + (Skill x 2) + (Luck / 2) + Support bonus + Weapon triangle bonus + S Rank bonus. While the hit rate itself is the most important part of the calculation, the battle accuracy formula checks it against enemy avoid, in which the bonuses provided from Skill and Luck may be impactful.

    For Three Houses, the formula is almost identical, at least according to the Fire Emblem Wiki, as I could not find a page on here regarding the combat calculations: Weapon accuracy: Hit + (Dexterity × 2) + (Luck / 2) + (Support bonus) + (Skill bonus).

    For Awakening, per SF's section on calcs- Weapon’s Hit rate + [(Skill x 3 + Luck) / 2] + Weapon Rank bonus
    Awakening Crit Calc- Weapon’s Critical + (Skill / 2)

    Without getting into Skill proc calcs, which are usually just based off of raw Skill/Dex, the Skill/Dex stat is SUPER important for combat calcs, not just providing a "lil boost" to hit rate. It can make or break certain units (usually axe users). To use an example that may be a bit of a stretch case-
    Vaike, the man, the myth, the legend from FE:A is notably the first dedicated Axe user you get. His bases for Skill and Luck are a respective 8 and 4. He starts with a D rank in Axes. The first weapon you get for him is an Iron Axe.
    Not accounting for enemy avoid, if we plug in the numbers to the calc formula

    • 75+[((8 x 3)+4)/2]+5
    • 75+[(28)/2]+5
    • 75+14+5
    • 94

    This gives Vaike a 94% Hit rate, assuming enemy dodge is a 0. If we grab enemy data (Risen Barbarian, Lv 2) from the chapter he was introduced in (On Lunatic, as Serenes doesn't seem to have the enemy data for chapter 2 on normal or hard) we can get a full combat calc-

    • Risen Barbarian Avo Calc: (Speed x 3 + Luck)/2-> (10 x 3 + 6)/2 -> 36/2 -> 18 avo
    • Combat calculation- Hit rate + Weapon triangle bonus + Support bonus – Enemy’s (Avoid + Terrain bonus + Support bonus) [%]
      • 94 (Vaike's hit rate) + 0 (Both are axe users) + 0 (No supports) - Enemy's (18+ 0 + 0) -> 94-18 -> 76%

    This gives Vaike a 76% chance to hit, and that 25% chance of missing is not insignificant on higher difficulties. Taking the same combat but bumping up his Skill by 2, assuming a REALLY good level or two gives us this-

    • 75+[((10 x 3)+4)/2]+5 -> 75+[34/2]+5 -> 75+17+5 -> 97%
    • 97 (Vaike's hit rate) + 0 (Both are axe users) + 0 (No supports) - Enemy's (18+ 0 + 0) -> 97-18 -> 79%

    Three points may not seem like too much, but you can see that this does make a difference over time, as it compounds more over time. If Vaike somehow, some way gains 10!!!! points in Skill (and got screwed in Luck) the calc looks like this

    • 75+[((18 x 3)+4)/2]+5 -> 75+[58/2]+5 -> 75+29+5 -> 109% Hit Rate
    • 109 (Vaike's hit rate) + 0 (Both are axe users) + 0 (No supports) - Enemy's (18+ 0 + 0) -> 109-18 -> 91%

    This makes sending Vaike into combat against said Risen Barbarian a lot less risky, with a 15% difference in hit rate through only(lol) gaining 10 points in Skill. This isn't even taking to account Crit calculations, where he'd have a simple 9% chance to crit-

    • Weapon’s Critical + (Skill / 2) -> 0 + (18/2) -> 9

    TL;DR- Skill/Dex actually plays a non-insignificant part in Combat Calculation. It's not *as* important as strength, but it is an important stat nonetheless. There are some units who can be considered unplayable on higher difficulties as they have low Skill growth and will rarely hit their attacks. All that is without getting into the usefulness of using Skill to help characterize units.

    See what I mean? The stat gets calculated by x1-2 or more to amount to anything. WTA in GBAFE to RD amounts to +/- 15% hit, SD-NM has WTA with +5-10, Awakening +5-15% and Fates +5-15% (20% if S-Rank). These bonuses are just +3-10 SKL, no RNG required. Not to mention having WTA is defensive in nature as well, as it lowers enemy hit/dmg, as opposed to only affecting Hit. And there are games that allow you to manipulate WT such as the Reaver Weapons or Dual Weapons and DOUBLES the WT effect.

    Weapon LVL in SD/NM is between +5-15%, +5-10% for Awakening and +5-15% in Fates = +3/10 SKL.

    Then we have all the skills affecting Hitrate, for Awakening between +10 and +50, so 7-33 SKL!

    Just using a Bronze Axe would give +5Hit = 3Skl.

    That´s before opening the the semi-unreliable can of worms regarding critical hits, wherein SKL is used on (SKL) or (SKL/2) basis and hinges even more on Weapons (Killer weapons) and Skills (Death Blow).

    By removing DEX/SKL and correspondingly elaborating on a Weapon Rank/Weapon Triangle System, Weapon stats (Really? +5 hit diff, per ranks?) and more elaborate skill systems you´d make CHOICE more interesting, rather than the brittle swiss army knife stat Dex currently is, which can be increased by, oh boy, +2/5 and whatever Rallie we want to use.

    Hell, the most interesting thing done with SKL in FE is Subakis Pike.

  10. I propose the erasure of the Skill/Dex stat in future entries.

    It serves no other purpose than a lil boost to hitrate, a lil bit of crit and the activation rate of skills, the first of which is dictated by weapon stats and weapon ranks, the second is, well, also tied to weapons and more to wepaon ranks and activation rate for skills... lmao. IS isn´t leaning hard enough into activation rates to not require stupid amounts of investments to make them worthwhile.

    Removing it would make weapons and weapon ranks more meaningful and would either force the removal of procc skills, or having them be reworked, maybe in a system that involves activation boosts like Quixotic or new one, again, tied to weapons. All the things it does, something else holds more or the same amount of sway over and the one thing it does have going for itself (well, outside of Luck procc skills) is just kinda not great. As such, why not get rid of this redundant survivor of the 1990s? Lay ´em to rest.

    P's more of a guard-focused guy, with a large portion of blocked damage being recoverable on the counterattack and a perfect parry not only blocking all damage if timed well, but conferring the stagger you would have received onto the enemy. Staggering an enemy coats their health bar in white, prompting you to hit them with a charged attack to set up a riposte state for huge damage. That's the crux of P's combat all game long: parry and counterattack, not dodge and punish.

    So its actually more like Seki- *more gunshots*

    I haven´t gotten the game, mainly because I´m cooling off of the Souls game style, but what I´ve seen from the game in a few streams etc. it did look to follow more a flow of combat rather than the usual red light-green light of dodge roll-stab.

    That being said, I do wonder, where the Souls genre will go? I feel like the possibilties of the genre are... kind of exhausted? From the classic Demons/Dark Souls, the more elaborate ways of a Nioh or Wo Long, Bloodbornes weapon system and rally system, Sekiros deflecting and deathblows... there´s only so many variations of attacks you can do, only so much delay to put in an attack... Judging by the amount of Overhaul mods for Elden Schwing that put in Sekior deflecting or try to, I think the tried and true combat could use something else. Well, there do be Elden Blings DLC to look forward to.

    I take it Code Vein is next? The Anime of Souls? 😛

    Nah chief, for that ain´t what I´m blabbering about as the Big Boss above has pointed out and 2) it´s dumb as fuck. The reason you think side characters are more interesting (probably, the fuck I know ´bout you) is cuz you don´t get the game world shown from their perspective so you have something to wonder about, while you most likely see exactly and know more about the MC, hence less room for interpretation, thus seemingly interesting. Not to mention the shit habit of trying for some kind of self insert as a MC.
