Fair enough, but I think games like the Tales or Persona franchises handle this well. They give you 6 - 10 characters to use and limit you to using four at a time, so unless you hate everyone, you'll still be able to build a team of just the characters you like and have all your bases covered (e.g. DPS, support, tank) since they're designed to have overlapping roles.

The issue with that would A: be permadeath and B: low unit counts for battles.

I consider Hopes having only 4 characters per map for every map too little. (You get 4 "AI only" units extra units for the big final map of each chapter but A: that's annoying they aren't controllable and B: I wish that was actually the standard.)

I really like having the big battles and controlling roughly 12 at minimum units in FE, part of the reason I heavily dislike Pair-Up is how it effectively often relegates units to stat backpacks so it feels like you're only playing with like 5 "real" units.

Yeah, he talked about Valbar a lot, but he did more than just talk about Valbar. Compare that to Monica, whose every Support seemed to involved Edelgard in some way, and even her Forging Bonds in Heroes was all about how much she liked her too (she was paired off with Tharja of all people, which really drives that home).

    Yeah Leon wasn't comedically obsessed.

I still liked Monica though since she was at least funny about it. (As opposed to Tharja, who's just creepy, not to mention the Noire stuff...)

Granted I also liked Faye in SOV and Monica is basically Faye 2.0.

  3. I'd like to see "learned" magic maybe be present but take more of a back seat to Tomes/Staves.

I liked getting rare limited high end spells and in 3H you won't know who gets what if playing blind but when you do get them, you may as well spam them completely, since you're getting free refills every map.

I'd like to see units have smaller/longer to learn "Inherent" magic, with tomes/staves making up most of your magic.

So one character learning free warp in the late-game would be distinct but anyone can use a warp staff.

Unarmed should replace fighting with broken weapons, it's funny and not being able to use 2-range when broken would be more of a drawback.

I think morph's or something like it should be given another try. Lately Fire Emblem has been fond of magical monsters as enemies. And they're all boring. Even monsters as imaginative as a bondage shrek always made things far less interesting whenever they showed up. Sacred Stones had the most imaginative designs with giant spiders(...okay not THAT imaginative), centaurs, and all manner of Greek monsters, but because those didn't have personality either they were all boring as well.

But Morphs have personality. Very much so in Sonia's case. Even the lack of personality in cases of Limstella and Denning become them having some sort of personality. They're also cost efficient. No need to create new monster models, just turn some skin grey and some eyes gold.

I agree, Morphs are pretty cool.

This is a recommendation thread, so I'm not going to sit here and argue with you (I knew one of you would reply to me, there is always one whenever this is brought up). Whether you want to argue or not, the fact is I listed the strengths and weaknesses of the game I recommended he play (the majority of people who enjoy Engage state the gameplay as a strength, which despite your attempt to defame it, is true) while the story is frequently cited as a weakness. If you disagree with either of those points it's obvious you're just being disingenuous.

I'm saying gameplay is subjective, after all, Fates was the "best gameplay" FE before Engage and I think the gameplay is awful in it. (Not played Engage.)

I'm also mainly disagreeing with the "story isn't the core of FE" take, considering how the GBA games onward tried to have it be more important. (Not to mention you listed Heroes as an example of a story driven FE? the game with Fates-tier writing.)

  6. 2 hours ago, Xander said:

Why not play Engage? The game is great. Is it just the newer generation of FE Heroes & Three Houses fans that don't actually know that the core of fire emblem games (God forbid you read an actual book if you want a good story) is the gameplay that have spammed bad reviews while being as vocal as possible? If you actually started with Three Houses and you expect an enthralling story in a Fire Emblem game you should probably play Tellius next.

    I mean.

To be blunt, the story seemed like a big part of the GBA/3DS games. (It's just any 3DS game not named Shadows of Valentia had awful writing.)

People can also just, think the gameplay is bad. (It sounds like it takes after Fates, and I hated Fates gameplay contrary to the norm of people who think it has the best gameplay of the 3DS games.)

    Hey guys.

After finishing Echoes I just decided to binge as many FE games as I could. I recently just finished FE6 Normal (Sacae) and I absolutely loved it. I would say it's my favorite FE by far but it could just be recency bias so it's still tentative between that or Three Houses.

I did start Sacred Stones but something about it just kind of turns me off from playing right now. Maybe it's how Eirika's sprite graphics look compared to how FE7 and FE6's sprites looked? And I've been heavily debating between this or Path of Radiance. Also been more and more tempted to try out Thracia, however I am aware that it's one of the harder installments of the series so it may be best to get a few more games under my belt, and a lot of people seem to recommend playing Geneology before Thracia so I'd need to mentally prepare for those huge maps. But I do know with the Radiant Duology and Thracia they're considered to have some of the strongest storytelling in the series, plus offer a good challenge. FE6 had a simple story (not bad in my opinion) but the challenge was thrilling to overcome.

I don't know I just thought it'd be cool to get some recommendations from you guys for what you would personally recommend to play next and on what difficulty?

Games I've finished: Awakening (Lunatic), Fates (All Routes on Normal), Echoes (Hard), Three Houses (All Routes on Hard), 7 (Normal), 6 (Normal)

Well if you want something different, Three Hopes exists and even has a Eshop demo you can download, so you can try it without actually buying it.

  8. I just beat chapter 13.

Since my other units were (and frankly, still are) unreliable, I was reluctant to use Mozu.

I am now on chapter 14 and Mozu is still level 1 and seemingly there is just no way to give her EXP right now.

Is she just useless to me? since it's not like Fodlan where the Adjunctant unit constantly gets EXP even if they don't "chip in".

And while I've admittingly not had the chance to send her against sword enemies, she appears to do 0 damage to at least axe enemies. (Yeah I know weapon triangle disadvantage but most enemies in the last chapter were either axes or lance enemies that she did zero damage to.)

It seems like she's past the point of potentially being usuable.

  9. Echoes

To put it as simply as possible,  I completely despise AwakenFates, the characters are unlikable, the gameplay sucks and the stories gives me headaches with their awful plot-hole-ridden-clearly-just-copying-tropes-willy-nilly writing.

Echoes, has a cast of characters I actually like, the story only really has Celica being dumb at the very end as a negative and the gameplay is actually fun since it completely lacks all the awful mechanics introduced in the other 3DS games. (I would like to thank Pair-Up and it's effects on gameplay for single handedly being the worst god damn thing ever.)

It also has no Avatar, which is great since I really hate the constant worship Robin and Corrin get alongside their godawful writing.

Echoes is a nice, simple well-made game that feels like it was actually made by people instead of randomly throwing stuff at the wall.

Regarding Shez: I haven't played Three Hopes, but just on principle I'm not sure I'll ever be able to respect someone who needed divine intervention to survive someone who needed divine intervention to survive a prologue bandit.

Clearly the takeaway is that Kostas is the strongest man in Fodlan.

IS are clearly saving him to be the final OP unit of Heroes.

-Garreg Mach Monastery was better designed than My Castle. Sure, it gets repetitive and tedious, but as stated above, the fact that Fates has many features that require heavy use of online to get any real use out of is really immersion breaking.

Agreed, playing Fates after 3H, I am amazed at how terrible My Castle is.

    Why is cooking random.

People talk up how great it is compared to Garreg Mach, but for me, all it did was make me appreciate Koei's Garreg Mach even more.

Oh, yeah, the achievement rewards won't be earned again. You could always keep the battalions; I don't think they'll be game-breaking, since the best ones require higher ranks you won't get until midway through the game anyway.

Can I accidently permanently destroy the unique weapons/batallions given by them or can I only get rid of the "generic" rewards.

At least of the unique stuff like the secret transport force, I know not to use them too early but I'm worried if I can accidently permanently destroy them from my save file.

I've never used stat boosters so I can just leave those in my inventory.

  13. 8 hours ago, Dark Holy Elf said:

You can set your level to 1, trash all your imported weapons and any crucial items (and don't use the ones you can't trash, like relics or whatever). You'll still important facility upgrades but those aren't that game-breaking by themselves. As mentioned you can also set the difficulty higher, though be warned that NG+ Maddening is still easier than NG Hard with almost any significant importing.

Agreed that gating content behind NG+ was really stupid. It should have unlocked just for beating all three routes on one player profile.

I guess i could try trashing everything with the level reset but even then, can you trash achievement stuff? since stuff like the batallions/weapons for achievement rewards seem unique.

  14. I know there's a bonus character for doing all 3 routes on one save file and this has put me in a bit of a pickle.

I generally dislike using a new game + feature as it usually makes a game too easy, and with Hopes I can see it easily doing that.

But I have to do NG+ for all rotues in order to unlock this character.

Any advice on how to minimize new game + stuff? I know all your items carry over, including Accessories which seems like an issue.

By the way guys, this thread was just meant to be about the possiblity of world building cheats being used to justify Edelgard's route, not a venue for yet another round of "Edelgard did nothing wrong". I suppose it was naive of me to expect things would stay on topic, but if I may indulge for just a moment: the whole point of Edelgard is that she does terrible things (that you've already discussed, like enabling TWSITD and starting a war without trying to negotiate or secede peacefully) for what she considers to be a just cause (getting away from the influence of bloodlines and specifically Crests). She even says as much right before the time skip in Crimson Flower (so just before Fodlan shifts to her affirming worldline).

If anything, those who say she's flawless and a perfect role model/ waifu are doing her just as big a disservice as those who blindly hate her.

I think I typed that up late and mistyped without realizing.

    I ment

    Spoiler

    Towards Byleth.

  16. My favourite is Mark, they're the avatar with the vaguest personality so you can headcanon yourself what it is, they don't fight and they don't have too much Avatar Worship. (With Byleth in second and Shez in third.)

Least Favourite: Honestly it could be Robin or Corrin, Corrin (who I gave the vote) is worse on a conceptional level, with their magic not-kill-anyone pacifism and the extremely absurd amounts of worship they get but I've actually finished Awakening so I have alot more personal dislike towards Robin due to having spent more hours with them.

I think it´d be supremely stupid telling even just the higher echelons of allied leadership what amounts to essentially "Nemesis killed most of the gods of this land and is using their spines to fight you. Also, he´s using my mom, the literal creator of my race, as a swordwhip."

As far as Wilhelm + successors and Seiros relationship goes... she does declare herself a Prophetess, fighting against a Nemesis that brings darkness over Fodlan or something to that effect and she can back her prophetess schtick up by becoming a big fucken dragon. Good enough if you ask me.

As per her S-support she had 2 motivations and that´s keepin the peace (for Sothis to take over at some point) and reviving Sothis, the latter House Hraesvelg doesn´t need to know and the former... she did legitimize his house as the founders/rulers of the new Empire.

Hm, the Tower of Black Winds script is ambiguos I´d say - it´s clear with Rheas quote about the commoners, but Sylvains reaction to Miklans finished transformation is kinda... y´know. It would also require the crest-having parts of the nobility to keep silent about the negative consequences of a crest-less person wielding a relic, unless Miklan specifcally doesn´t care, but at the same time he seems a bit surprised about getting sludged.

Then again it´s Sylvain. Bro don´t pay attention if it ain´t a woman.

    The wiki also has this:

      Reveal hidden contents

Tomas: Stories of misfortune have followed the Heroes' Relics since ancient times.
(The librarian had been near Byleth & Claude all along, and they're startled by his sudden appearance.)
Claude: Tomas! You've caught me by surprise. That's not easy to do. Though I suppose I should've expected to see our librarian in his library.
Tomas: I am sorry to intrude. I simply heard you speaking of the Heroes' Relics. I can tell you more about them, if you'd like.
Tomas: The story goes that Nemesis was corrupted by evil because of the Sword of the Creator. Other Heroes also lost themselves by continuing to use the Relics...transforming into Black Beasts with twisted souls.
Tomas: There used to be a great many records regarding the dark history of the Relics.
    Claude: Used to be?
Tomas: They have been destroyed, across all of Fódlan. Stripped from their shelves, including those that resided at this very library.
Claude: You make it sound like the church is covering up the truth. But now that you mention it, Rhea was very specific about not wanting anyone to find out what happened at Conand Tower.
Claude: Hey Tomas... why are you telling us all this?
Tomas: It seemed like you were searching for answers about the Relics. What is a librarian if not a guide in the search for knowledge. And not only have you been searching, but you have been doing so through the night. I would suggest you stop before the knights notice.
Tomas: And that is enough meddling for today. Please excuse me.

Now that I think about it...... why does Sothis know how to fight the Beasts? She wasn´t... alive? conscious? when she and her people were repurposed into these weapons. so I´d assume it´s her first time fighting these two, unless she gives us strats that worked against her own kin.

The same mechanics are used for fighting Dragon Rhea in CF.

Good luck trying to get dead people to change their idealogy.

Exactly, dead horrible people can't impose their ideaology on others and horrible people with drastic enough idealogy are willing to kill to make sure it stays.

I don't see what's so surprising of "Horrible people impose a horrible system, people who want to change it have to take up arms", the thing other FE lords have pretty much done by taking out enemy rulers.

  19. 27 minutes ago, Jotari said:

You're just denying the existence of morality now. Well sure, anyone can do anything if you use the excuse that the world is flawed to justify anything. My point is that Edelgard's war was unjustified, not that the world was perfect (though Fodlan from what we see is a far better place to live than Earth was even four hundred years ago). She had other options she could have done to accomplish her goals peacefully, but she chose not to. She chose to to start a war that killed countless people because she literally wanted to force her idealogy on people who didn't want it.

You mean....that thing the Church was doing?

Also good luck getting evil people to change their idealogy.

"Hey I hate how you have all this class-ism stuff and try to keep the commoner down, pls stop it".

Evidently enough people agree with her considering she has an army. (Does the Empire even have conscription?)

  20. Am I really the only one who didn't have too much of an issue with these maps in Echoes?

They were a bit long but I don't recall having too much trouble, I honestly had more trouble with Fates Pre-route.

Unless it's purely length if you know what you're doing, as opposed to having to reset constantly.

Like I genuienly don't recall having issues with Zofia Castle, the only time it was difficult was the DLC version.

  21. 1 hour ago, Imuabicus said:

    I assume you mean this?

The leaders of the church have misused its creed to fulfill their true desire—to rule the world. They have fooled the people of Fódlan. Long ago, they divided the Empire to create a Kingdom, and then...divided that Kingdom to create an Alliance. They did all of this to make the masses bicker amongst themselves. They caused instability in order to reinforce their own authority. They gathered gold and lived in extravagance. How? By preying on the devotion of those who wished for the goddess's salvation. Those corrupt hypocrites cannot lead Fódlan to true peace. Their foul belief system must be torn asunder so that true wisdom may finally prevail! And so, I have decided...by order of the Adrestian Emperor, Edelgard von Hresvelg... The Empire hereby declares war on the Church of Seiros!
(The soldiers cheer for Edelgard as the scene fades out.)

The casus belli here, so to say, or the one she presents to her soldiers, would appear to me that the leaders of the church are misusing money (following the creation of artificial separations between the people of Fodlan, to make it easier to do so). Now what´s it look like if you say, these people are thiefs, so lemme take the bag and do my thing with it? And she declared war on the institution (Church of Seiros) not the faith (of Sothis, presumably), but how does that then look if you try to enforce exile or conversion on it´s members?

Let´s not ignore that she is speaking here, primarily to her soldiers, not even the citizens of Enbarr, it´d seem.

If the Slitherers intent is revenge and they control the court to the degree that they make deals, influence or replace the ministers at the literal seat of imperial dynastic power, behind even the back of the ruling Prime Minister, why would they take or allow such an indirect way of going about it?

I don´t think Edelgard not having the political weight - her father lost a signifcant power struggle, she hasn´t been to the empire and has been experimented on for some time - to enforce her policies is the same thing as her being manipulated. Her being manipulated would, I think, mean that she entirely buys Thales story about the church, but that is evidently not the case.

Linhardt, I think, expresses distinct surprise just how easily she ascended the throne and gained the military and financial support to start a war of all things. I would expect Arundel/the Slitherers to have had his/their fingers in that soup, because why else would the ministers just lend her the political power they just took from her father a couple of years before?

Yeah, Edelgard is trying to use the Slithers as much as they're using her.

It's less "she's fully onboard with them" and more "The enemy of my enemy is my friend, especially when the other enemy is way larger."

I've been mulling over this since Three Houses came out but I've been meaning to talk about it more strongly over the past few months and a topic on the Engage forum prompted me to give this a go.

When you start CF, Edelgard tells you the "true" history of Fodlan, that Rhea is a control freak who's evil to the core and Nemesis and the other Elites were essentially freedom fighters. The rest of the route seems to support this. People have already pointed out that Edelgard is much nicer than in other routes (even if she still lies to her own allies) but Rhea is much more malicious too.

But then you look at the other routes and... none of the above makes sense. Nemesis et al. are clearly painted as power-hungry maniacs, Rhea is shown to be someone who meant well but chose poorly and Edelgard goes full war criminal (RIP Bernie). And to top it all off, these (and other details) remain consistent among all three of the other routes.

There's still some evidence for Edelgard's claims in them: for example, the library in the Abyss shows the Church tried to stop technology progressing too far, Manuela states in Part 1 how odd it is that Garreg Mach is connected to all three regions despite the original Empire splintering after it was built and Rhea flat out admits to faking history (but only in an attempt to prevent another war), but despite these three routes remaining consistent it feels like Crimson Flower pulled a Fates by changing reality to make itself make more sense.

Either that, or Edelgard pulled a Celica and decided the obviously evil people she knew were liars and manipulators were telling the truth over more reliable sources for some reason.

    What do you think?

While we don't know how much Edelgard believes it, she clearly doesn't trust Rhea's history, so even if she doesn't believe all of it, she probably thinks what Rhea's saying is bunk.

The Drop of Joy line is...well Edelgard says it best in response: Pretty words, but it doesn't make a difference. She may not like her body-snatched uncle personally, but his death is clearly devastating enough for her to decide on her last option a moment later - foreshadowing that she's about to complete her uncle's experiments and become the giant crest monster. If you had given her a choice to let Arundel die in battle or save his life, I can't imagine her choosing the former, especially in this route when pushed into a corner.

I recall it clearly being less sad about Arundel for her transformation and more how her only options realistically right now or death or imprisonment since the forces that killed Arundel are coming for her, she hates Thales but needs him alive since she needs the resources of TWISTD to fight the Church. (Hopes makes it messy but Hopes already has blatant large retcons like Sothis' power doing completely different things so I don't think we can fully assume stuff is 1-1 between it and Houses, especially since from what I've heard, AG has things go even worse for Edelgard than the Houses Blue Lions route so clearly trying to backstab TWSITD early can come back to bite her.)

Realistically, there's no way Dimitri can just let her go and considering what happened to her, I believe Edelgard would choose death over any more imprisonment.

Plus the endings I recall make it clear that we fight TWISTD offscreen, it's awful it's offscreen (Whenever due to a mistaken belief that ending with Rhea only is better or due to time/budget iissues), but it's still there, Jeritza and Byleth's S-Support is even mid-them fighting TWSITD in Shambala.

    Hi,

This is my first time playing a game of this saga, and I have several questions regarding it:

1- My main characther, the proffesor, is a swordmaster. I have read that Lysithea is the best mage in the game, so Im trying to recruit her, but the issue is that as my character is skilled in sword+dex+etc but not faith/magic, it seems that im not able to do it, even if I have given her a lot of gifts and fought with her and now we have the level B support. What else could we do? Do you need to play the same class as the character that you want to recruit? Because in that case I would only be able to recruit sword players or similar.

2- I have recruited catherine and she seems really OP. She kills almost all regular enemies with a normal atack. Now I have just recrutied the other proffesores (Manuale and the other guy), I have not tested them in battle yet, but are they so op too? Is it better to play with them rather than with your students? Are there parts of the story when you can only play with your studes? I have just finished the battle of the eagle and the lion, and there I couldnt play with other than my students.

3- With sylvain, I think that his heroic lance got broked without using a combat art, is it possible? Since I thought that only combat arts consume durability. But I think that I did a regular atack and it broke

4- Regarding difficulty: I find this game really easy, Im playing in hard/casual. I find easy to win all the battles, even not using all my units or gambits, just with regular atacks and going straight forward, since I have 3-4 characters than kill everyone in a single atack, or even with counter atacks, so I dont need to worry. Is always like that? If so, what would you recommend me for a new run, go madness/casual or hard/permadeath? Would you recommmend me to use NG+? I have read that you can keep your battalions and renown.

5- I just read that they released recently a new game, engage, but it has much worse reviews than this one. Is it so? Is much worse? Since I want to explore more about this saga, but the other games seems too old right?

    Thanks in advance

You can briefly switch to increasing that skill (By using that class or faculty training) to recruit someone then switch back.

Catherine is good but falls off, the students generally will get more stats when levelling up, at least allowing them to become onpar with Catherine.

All attacks consume durability, Combat Arts just consume them faster.

For what it's worth, Classic mode means you have to avoid units dying, so I play on Classic, you have the turnwheel, so you can still fix it if someone dies but it requires you to go back and prevent them dying.

The first FE game I loved was FE7 on the GBA and I played in 2008, the older games are outright better than some of the new ones in my opinion.
