If you set your status on Skype to "away," you'll still get the messages, but the screen itself won't pop up when a new message is received. If you want to read or take part in the conversation, you can open up Skype and manually open it. Then you can either read the messages that have popped up since the last time you were on, or just scroll down to the bottom and catch up with what's going on right then.

Yeah, AIM is incredibly outdated and really deserves to fade away. I haven't used it in over 5 years, and even back then I could only stand it through a 3rd party multi-messaging system because the native interface was horrible. MSN is decent, but I haven't signed in in ages. Mostly I use Skype and GTalk for the few live online conversations I carry on.

In cases where you only name one character, and you get to pick gender (pokémon trainer!), I always pick a female and I always name it Kirie. In cases where you only name one character, and you are forced as a male, usually I just keep the default name. In cases where you get to name multiple characters, I like naming the characters after characters from other video games, just for amusement. On one playthrough of Emerald, I named all my pokémon after other pokémon, but that got confusing so I never did it again after that. I'm rather fond of naming characters after the character of Lunar games.
