Honestly I'd be happy if no characters from the other games showed up. Anna making a cameo as a merchant is fine, however I'd prefer not seeing her as a playable unit. It was interesting in Awakening being able to have her as a PC but it felt like an afterthought in Fates, even if she was DLC. Due to the fact that Three Houses isn't directly tied into any other games (as far as we know) it would be best if the new cast could stand on their own two feet. Before Awakening characters didn't show up in other games unless they took place in the same world, and I'd like IS to go back to this ethos.

This was a Fire Emblem game?
Not really, it was more ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Persona!’ rather then Fire Emblem.

I'm now a bit more interested in this game, but only a bit. I hope that whichever of the three houses the avatar sides with will create conflict and change the course of the story. It would be nice to have some actual role playing elements in a JRPG and to have the ideas of Fates be properly implemented into a game.

I've never really understood the appeal of the Tales Of series. Although it is regarded as one of the bigger JRPG series out there, I feel that most of the games embrace the tropes and cliches of anime way too much. The series as a result to me comes of as decent, but nothing special. Thus I wish to pose the question as to what makes the Tales Of games special to you?

...Why is this banner a thing?

I’m honestly still apathetic about the game until we get more information or a new trailer. I’m currently too busy enjoying the short stories of Ray Bradbury to care.

Wait...where am I?

About damn time we got some laguz units!

Probably would enjoy the works of Karl Edward Wagner.

In the mean time why don’t you read some good old sword and sorcery literature, like Frirz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. I just finished Karl Edward Wagner’s Kane series which I’d also recommend, although not for the faint of heart.

I can agree with that.
I’m one of those old fans whose been playing the series for well over a decade and yet had fun with both Awakening and Fates. By the time Awakening came out I had already beaten all the other games in the series and was looking forward to a brand new FE game in 2013. Although I enjoyed Awakening, I believe that it was all the callbacks to the other games in the series that made me enjoy the game more then I should of originally. That and also being able to marry Tiki, in the process giving her own personal story a positive resolution.

I can argue that Awakening still pulls this off to a degree. Sure, there's fanservice and anime cliches, but it still has a solid story imo.
True, but in my opinion to a far lesser degree then what is found in the Jugdral Saga or Tellius Saga.

I started with awakening, decided to see if path of radiance and radiance dawn were as good as awakening, and found myself loving them far more than I ever imagined.
It just feels so unfair that IS doesn't just re-release the older games so everyone can decide for themselves. The hellion days of FE’s youth was put to the sword long ago.

I think the issue with some fans (such as myself) is that Awakening and Fates lowered the bar for the series in terms of storytelling and characterization. It really feels like these two games sought to mimic FE’s contemporaries (Tales of Series and Final Fantasy) in terms of style and tone to gain relevancy in a dire time for the series. While this gambit worked in getting the series high sales figures and new fans, in the long run the core ethos of the series has suffered as a result. The FE games seem to no longer be war epics dealing with the themes of fellowship and tragedy, but instead more interested in waifu culture and anime cliches.

Apparently IS thinks that it’s still 2006. The theme is very anachronistic when compared to the music of the other FE games.

Correct:
Can we replace the stupidly edgy song from the trailer with actual non-stupud non-edgy songs for real?
I didn’t know that it was still 2006. Huh.

Did anyone else get a feeling of tonal whiplash from playing Chapter 3?

I’m of the opinion that the story of Fates wasn’t as terrible as everyone says. I think that while the main plot has issues, the themes of the game were very interesting (family, betrayal, the consequences of choice, etc) and handled well. The concept of Conquest had me enthralled, not being the clear cut “good guys” and having the Nohrian royals trying to justify the atrocities of war based off a sense a misplaced loyalty and fear. I really felt that IS was trying to do a A to Z villain story with the Nohrian royals during Conquest. The idea behind this is that a character will commit an evil act which they justify to themselves and then commit a worse act and so on (hence A to Z). Thus the actions of the character spiral out of control over time until they end up being the villain. The concept alone beats the hell out of most generic JRPGs stories even if it wasn’t fully realized in the game. Less “friendship is magic” and more Karl Edward Wagner’s Kane series, an improvement by my estimation anyway.
