In the mean time why don’t you read some good old sword and sorcery literature, like Frirz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. I just finished Karl Edward Wagner’s Kane series which I’d also recommend, although not for the faint of heart.

    I can agree with that.

I’m one of those old fans whose been playing the series for well over a decade and yet had fun with both Awakening and Fates. By the time Awakening came out I had already beaten all the other games in the series and was looking forward to a brand new FE game in 2013. Although I enjoyed Awakening, I believe that it was all the callbacks to the other games in the series that made me enjoy the game more then I should of originally. That and also being able to marry Tiki, in the process giving her own personal story a positive resolution.

I started with awakening, decided to see if path of radiance and radiance dawn were as good as awakening, and found myself loving them far more than I ever imagined.

It just feels so unfair that IS doesn't just re-release the older games so everyone can decide for themselves.

The hellion days of FE’s youth was put to the sword long ago.

  4. I think the issue with some fans (such as myself) is that Awakening and Fates lowered the bar for the series in terms of storytelling and characterization. It really feels like these two games sought to mimic FE’s contemporaries (Tales of Series and Final Fantasy) in terms of style and tone to gain relevancy in a dire time for the series. While this gambit worked in getting the series high sales figures and new fans, in the long run the core ethos of the series has suffered as a result. The FE games seem to no longer be war epics dealing with the themes of fellowship and tragedy, but instead more interested in waifu culture and anime cliches.

  5. I’m of the opinion that the story of Fates wasn’t as terrible as everyone says. I think  that while the main plot has issues, the themes of the game were very interesting (family, betrayal, the consequences of choice, etc) and handled well. The concept of Conquest had me enthralled, not being the clear cut “good guys” and having the Nohrian royals trying to justify the atrocities of war based off a sense a misplaced loyalty and fear. I really felt that IS was trying to do a A to Z villain story with the Nohrian royals during Conquest. The idea behind this is that  a character will commit an evil act which they justify to themselves and then commit a worse act and so on (hence A to Z). Thus the actions of the character spiral out of control over time until they end up being the villain. The concept alone beats the hell out of most generic JRPGs stories even if it wasn’t fully realized in the game. Less “friendship is magic” and more Karl Edward Wagner’s Kane series,  an improvement by my estimation anyway.

  6. Within the last two years of ‘surviving’ a PGCE program at a Russell Group (England’s Ivy League) university and teaching in an inner city school. It’s amazing how a teacher’s perspective can change after being assaulted several times by their own students. Also living abroad for a fourth year with a newly acquired Italian citizenship can also do the trick I suppose.

Time for yoy to hang up fire emblem my guy. Seem like your been put into the elite class now and typical jrpg fantasy medevil stories or anime will stratified you anymore; probably watch some 80s or 70s maybe 90s anime. Bob samurai a good source for old school to recent 90s anime. Probably western games are more to your new refine test. No bull I am being 110 real with you.

I’m going to give FE Three Houses a try. As for anime, I’ve basically stopped watching it. I’ll watch an episode or two here and there, but it’s been years since I last watch on entire season of a show. I can’t even remember the last anime I watched to completion.

In one short sentence... How dark are SMT games? Its theme is death and gore and edgy stuff? :o

The SMT games are very dark and disturbing. In many of the games you kill God (as in the Jeudo-Christian God) to try and save humanity from his yoke. Spoiler Warning: It doesn’t work.

Listen to the music and you’ll get a good understanding of the atmosphere of the first 2 SMT games.
