  1. Can anyone give me some characters that you think would excel as a mage/cleric/dm in this game on H3? I'm doing a magic users(and marth) only run so for example I was thinking about mking either palla or catria a mage because they have good speed. You guys have any personal suggestions on what characters make good spellslingers?

    Cecil is best Cleric->Sage.

Beat you to it again Dragon Boner.

Otherwise, Malliesia is really really good. She takes A LOT of babying as a Mage, but is worth it if you can afford to train her as a mage, if not then she is still good as a Cleric->Sage. Other decent candidates include Merric, Ellerean, and possibly even Yumina.

Yeah you really don't wanna make Palla or Catria a mage. They're much better in pretty much any other class.

Edit: As for chapter 4, you gotta use that shiny rescue.

  2. I mean, how does destroying villages help his "quest"? Exp grinding?

    Just look at Serenesforest

    Walhart failed to conquer Lunatic+

Apparently it's because I never destroyed any villages for EXP grinding

Dammit, Boner, stop trying to motivate me to beat Luna+, it's not working. Ok, it actually is working.

  3. I think it's completely fine to keep the discussion here... in case anyone else can help... but...

    5ZzxZhl.gif

    Wat.

    It's the right address.

Try this... get Dolphin in debug mode again.

    Load that savestate.

Go in to the memory menu as shown in the screeshots.

Go to that address and see if it's similar to the window on the left side of the first screenshot.

If the values are... enter "00000000" to replace the "01000000" and click Set Value.

See if what happens is like the second screenshot.

If it does, that just means the cheats you enter as gecko codes aren't working in the emulator (the cheat engine) and the code (address) itself is fine.

    PLIuUdN.png

    31WnqK6.png

Make sure you have "Enable Cheats" on the config menu, just in case.

Yep, the replace value worked (it switched from 01000000 to 00000000) and cheats are enabled, but still no luck getting the code to work. Then does that mean it is an emulator issue? Perhaps I am entering/applying them incorrectly or something, I don't really know? This just keeps getting stranger.

Could I perhaps just change that address manually every time I wanted to apply the code and just run in debug mode all the time? It wouldn't be much more of a hassle than applying a regular gecko code.

  4. Hehe, well Walhart would probably have succeeded in conquering the world. I mean the guy gives Skrimir a run for his money. Walhart is the guy who said with a straight face that he had no need for strategy. God help us all, if he actually uses his brain to direct his power.

I've got to use this one sometime. No strategy indeed!

Let's not sell Walhart short, here.

Keep in mind that we mostly see Walhart from the viewpoint of his enemies - enemies for which he holds a special disdain due to their religious beliefs and for their optimistic hope for diplomatic peace (Keep in mind that a large part of Walhart's preference for conquest comes from the history of Valm, where Alm was able to unite the continent through warfare, and where there has never been any observed indication of diplomacy being particularly effective - the deterioration of the Empire into perpetually squabbling states points towards a primarily political downfall, not a powerful rebellion or other military takeover).

From what we can tell, the Valmese (which in all likelihood includes a significant number of the conquered peoples) view Walhart as something akin to a god. He is said to be the reincarnation of the most celebrated hero in the continent's history. He has boosted Valm from a backwater collection of nations into what might be the most powerful state in the world. He is a dictator, to be sure, and a man with little respect for those he views as weak, but he is not a megalomaniac tyrant. His ambition to conquer Archanea comes foremost not from the desire to crush more peoples under the Valmese boot, but to prevent the resurrection of Grima and ensure the continued survival and dominance of humanity (indeed, if Walhart has one end goal, it is to boost humanity to the height of its potential, regardless of any opposition he runs into along the way.)

That's why the parallels with Alm are so interesting. Sure, Alm is presented to us as ultimately benevolent - after all, his war against Rigel is justified by Rigel's actions. But what if, in a Celica-less alternate history, if Sofia would have refused to accept Alm's unification? What if they kept their Mila-centric beliefs, and still walked that path to quiet self-destruction? Is it so hard to believe that this alternate-universe Alm would decide that another war would be a sad necessity in order to better the world, to achieve the goal of lasting peace he had already fought so hard to bring about? When you think about it that way, I think, they aren't so different in a way that few other Fire Emblem characters can claim.

Does the Walhart we ourselves see in game seem like someone who razes villages for fun and sport, or someone who razes villages because he thinks it's a necessary military tactic?

The sources we hear from are likely to be rather biased against Walhart, after all. And from their perspective, his actions might seem to be unprovoked and thoughtlessly cruel.

But the Walhart we actually see is a bit more intelligent than that. He doesn't seem the type to go raze villages just for fun. However, he probably knows that, if there is some dissent popping up, razing a village is a fast and effective way to scare the populace back into complacency.

I'm not saying he's a good guy, and not saying that the game necessarily treats him in a consistent manner, but I don't think he's as cartoonish as you think. (Though it's an understandable opinion given that most of the Valmese sources we get like to paint him like he is).

Well put. This saved me a lot of time that I would have spent defending Walhart. I don't know much about Alm, but it really warms my giant lobster heart when someone sees Walhart for what he really is: an intelligent, powerful, and principled leader who was not successful simply because he was not the game's main character.

  5. I can tell this is a very difficult time for you, so just allow me to say you have my deepest condolences (which isn't much really, but nonetheless) for your tragic defeat. But tell, why the hell did you think having Excellus as a commander was a good idea?

Haha this post confused me for a while before I remembered I was Walhart XD. And I knew Excellus was a sniveling worm but I kept him around because his arrogance amused me.

That aside, I always get the feeling that they made PoR with plans for RD, but then either had an overhaul in the latter's plot of just got high off their assess. So much in PoR just happens to be told in RD, but the plot is so damn stupid! (You want me to buy this pseudo-god slaying crap? Really?)

Yeah, the whole God-slaying part I've never been a fan of it needs more Walhart, but the part of the plot that deals with natural rather than supernatural characters (i.e. like 90% of the plot) is quite realistic and rather cerebral compared to most games IMO, so I just focus on that.

That aside, my main issues with the game plot/character wise are-

    A) Micaiah. What a Mary-sue little bitch without much combat use, staves aside. I also think she truly shows off how poorly thought out RD itself was, because Micaiah herself can never face a dark magic user, so the WTA of light magic is almost completely redundant, especially given you can rarely use dark magic to fight anima mages.

    B) Sothe. Sothe's a pushover and for some reason they decided to make him a main character and a Jeigan! He's even a generic class! And how did he go from 10 to 21 in three years? SOTHE! WHY!

    C) Ike. In PoR, Ike was a well developed character. As a lord his fighting style had a regalness to it that matched how he became more mature as both a person and a swordsman over the year of the games events. In RD he's a sleeveless model. WHAT THE HELL GAME?!?! I liked how he was depicted during the base convo 'Shinon' (where you get a blue gem), being innocent but not naive, but otherwise he's just kind of a burly guy in the stories without a lot of character.

    D) is for Dawn Brigade. They have very little characterization an almost always end up under-leveled. I feel like I need to low-man it for any of them to be plausible end-game fighters.

    E) Not enough Volke. Volke was a very important and interesting character in PoR, but he barely shows up here. I still love the guy, but you only get him for 6 maps. Provided, I usually enjoy the first five of those when not fight D-black dragon person. Fuck mantle.

I agree with all of these (with the exception of C), and feel that E is a very strong point. I think Ike's ruggedness is pretty consistent with his character, but I agree that the DB was weak (both statwise and in character development) and that Sothe's levels scaled abnormally between FE9 and FE10. And I definitely think there was a lot of wasted potential WRT Volke and Bastian's backstories between the two games.

  6. The code that Vicious Sal posted worked in a pal version of the game unmodified and with the button activators, though i had to mash 1 and + over and over until all of the sudden Purgo and his bandits were blue

I tried again in the NTSC version but i couldn't make it work

Hmm... I could switch to the PAL version i guess, but I'd rather not since I've already hacked the NTSC ISO. I can't find info on how to convert the working PAL code, so hopefully someone can post the offset so I can at least try that before doing the ram dump (if that offer still stands).

Assuming the offer does stand (it's understandable if it doesn't), and i can't find an alternative in the next couple days, i'll post the ram dump here (i have an eleven hour flight coming up in a few days and getting these codes working so i can start my run would help immensely).

  7. Poll stats so far, sorted worst to best scores by (# of Most Favorite Votes-# of Least Favorite Votes):

    Tharja -20 (yikes)
    Nowi -7
    Sully -6
    Sayri -6

    Miriel -2
    Flavia -1
    Panne +0
    Tiki +1
    Sumia +2
    Maribelle +4
    Lissa +4
    Cordelia +6
    Olivia +7
    Anna +8
    Cherche +10

It is no surprise that, for the most part, the most controversial characters (Nowi, Tharja) have the lowest ratings on this scale while the characters on the high end (with the exceptions of Olivia and Cordelia) are more neutral and generally harder to dislike. I mean, how can anyone really hate Anna or Cherche? Also, according to the results so far, WRT the more controversial characters, Olivia and Cordelia seem to be way more liked than Tharja and Nowi.

  8. Fuck, you steal my punchline

    Nosferatu!Cecil is the best

    XD true that!

Fanservice is fine if it's integrated well into someone's character. Tharja's character design makes more sense (well, at least for Fe13 standards) for someone like her. Contradicting your own goddamn characters' personalities for the sake of fanservice (fuck you Olivia) is stupid.

Yep, having a sex symbol type character or two is fine, but when they start designing arbitrary characters' appearances for fanservice purposes it doesn't make much sense (like Olivia or the elephant in the room- Nowi). But again, I don't really feel too strongly about the whole fanservice thing, I just agree it makes for poorly done characters when characters designs and personalities aren't consistent.

The fanservice bit was directed only at Olivia, not Cordelia. I have no issue with Cordelia's character design, but rather with the character itself.

Oops, I meant Olivia not Cordelia. Fixed that, thanks.

  9. Cecil is a terrible Cavalier, and this is coming from a Cav fanatic >_>

I never said I liked using her as a cavalier >_>

    Cleric->Sage Cecil is the best!

I really like Cherche. She is a classy woman who is both in touch with humanity and ?Wyvern kind?. Her personality is a bit gimmicky, but it's not a stupid gimmick. She loves the shit out of her beloved Minerva, and her whole existence in the plot comes with genuine reason. She aids Virion in escaping the crumbling Pre-Valmese continent in order to seek aid. She joins Chrom and Co to help restore her homeland's independence and protect others. Granted, other characters exhibit national pride (Cordelia, Maribelle, Sumia, Lissa), but they're all from the same side already. Cherche joined from the outside pretty much desperate for help, but never lost her cool in the process. How many females join Ylisse from other Nations? Flavia, but she was sought for help already. Say'ri, but she was just sort of picked up along the way. Nowi, same thing. Tharja, joined out of boredom/Avatar infatuation. Olivia was more or less handed to Chrom by an established ally. Anna joins but doesn't really have an alliegance, and Tiki is well, picked up optionally because Falchion. Cherche came from the outside with a legit reason.

She's polite and charming, and has an interesting background to boot (ex-cleric and all), while most of the characters in game, female especially, haven't really gone through any life changing or career changing events. Lissa was always a princess, Tharja was always a Plegian Hex specialist, Olivia was from what I can tell, always interested in performing and Miriel has always been studious as could be. I respect that, but I respect Cherche's life change even more.

As for least favorite, gotta be Tharja. I just can't find the overly attached girlfriend and abusive mother to be appealing.

Agreed that Cherche is one of the least gimmicky females (other less gimmicky ones include Lucina and maybe Panne). Unfortunately, this means that some people find her a bit boring, but I personally don't.

At least [Tharja]'s interesting and isn't a mess of contradictory blah for the sake of fanservice

Which is much more than I can say for Cordelia and Olivia

Tharja is definitely not as contradictory as Cordelia (Edit: Meant Olivia), however even I have to admit that Tharja is pretty fanservice-y and I personally hate the whole "OMG fanservice" thing.

  10. Weirdly, I can't replicate the behavior with the Axes. I threw Gregor out there, no Pair-up partner, equipped with a 1-2 range weapon, and stripped of both Avoid +10 and Patience. Both of the Warriors have 94% listed HIT on him with Axes at this point. But unless they have Hawkeye, they still preferred to attack with their bows.

It's kind of baffling. Gregor is basically guaranteed to die on Enemy Phase, so maybe the near-100% hit chance and the irrelevancy of the extra +1 mt had something to do with it.

Hmm... that's weird. I'm trying to think of some way to test this without trying every def and hit combination, but I haven't thought of anything so I'm afraid it'll be difficult to test conclusively.

  11. Or, the player selects, say, 7 unfielded units, who all then get a full level up. This way the army isn't growing universally a tiny amount (One level per two maps is pretty pathetic) and it still affords the player a degree of choice.

Another interesting idea (probably for a separate context) would be to implement a traditional RPG level up system (can't think of a better name of example for it), whereby each level nets you a certain number of stats and you can choose which stats to boost. For example, beating a chapter could give you three "points" or whatever and you could choose to spend 3 on strength, 1 on str and 2 on spd, etc. Point costs would increase as the stat gets higher so you couldn't just pour all your levels into speed and have an uber broken character.

It'd probably be really hard to implement, but I'm just throwing it out there. It's something I thought would be interesting, it probably wouldn't be compatible with this idea but it could potentially add a new mechanic to the game.

  12. iirc, Gangrel's motives were to protect the continent (...hey, is the continent called Ylisse too? Like how Archanea referred to both the continent and country?) from Walhart and then he went overboard and mad. Also has a very sucky backstory.

Here are the two main problems - a) said sucky backstory is only mentioned/implied in the japanese only background site and not every english player knows japanese (I only know about it thanks to shadowofchaos's lp) and b) his explanation/motives are ONLY shown through the optional support conversations (in particular, I think they were just the male!avatar's, though it could be in the female's as well), which some people might completely skip over because Gangrel's an ass (I only have them because I'm filling out the support library for instance). Unlike Walhart, whose motivations were stated in the story proper through both his own words and through the villains'.

IS did a VERY good job in making people (me) hate Gangrel. I feel like they bungled the whole 'atoner'/'redemption' part of him in the spotpass. (Okay yes, I'm pretty certain his conversation with Emm in the Spas mention/imply he feels he's past redemption... but, damn it, you could at least try!)

No argument here. I couldn't have put it better myself.

He forgave him? I thought it was more that Gangrel just wasn't worth killing because he was so damn pathetic.

(note: all of the above is based off my no doubt spotty memory and I could be mistaken about just about anything up there)

Nah, you're right, I just phrased it badly. I only saw the Gangrel recruitment once (I couldn't bring myself to do anything but slaughter him in my other playthrough), so your description was better. IIRC Chrom said something about not killing him out of mercy or "that's what sister would have done" kinda thing, but I still find it hard to believe that Chrom wouldn't be vindictive about it (goes back to what I said earlier in either this or another topic about lords supposedly motivated by "revenge" that don't display any sort of vindictiveness or appropriate anger).

  13. And I just really don't like Sully at all. Cecil was the better tomboy cavalier.

Definitely. I hate Sully (probably third worst after Maribelle and Cordelia IMO). The swearing every sentence gets old quickly, I mean couldn't IS be more subtle? And Cecil's great, both as a unit and as a character (well, by FE12 new character standards anyway).

Edit: Wow, looks like I was wrong about people liking Tharja (although I was right about people disliking her). Apparently her popularity in Japan does not translate to here (unfortunately it appears that Cordelia is just as popular here, however).

  14. It sounds like a great idea! The only issue that seems like an actual problem is the unit balance. You would need to provide additional incentives to use units other than fliers and mounts as you have said. I think simply nerfing the growths of fliers and mounts (plus not having a mounted or flying Jeigan) should suffice, but if you would rather get more creative that's even better. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any FEs where fliers and mounts had obviously worse growths (well, maybe FE6 fliers), but that would be an interesting and effective way to encourage balanced parties, since if done correctly fliers would still have use while not being as broken.

  15. Well, apparently (based on what 1% critted said) the AI isn't consistent with this sort of thing, so it places different weights on 5 hit depending on specific hit rate values, but I still think it would be reliable in this case. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference here since the chance of enough warriors spawning with Hawkeye and Counter for Laurent to die is negligible, so IMHO I would consider it about as reliable as it gets.

  16. Favorite is Say'ri, I just love her story, her mannerisms, the fact that she is a swordmaster [my favorite class]. My favorites that tail her are Sully, Miriel and Maribelle

Least favorite is Tharja, due to the horrors she inflicts on Noire, but she isn't too bad otherwise she is just my least favorite of the bunch

I figured I'd like Say'ri before playing the game (prepromoted female Swordmaster with Lunatic bonuses), but I didn't find her particularly appealing due to her late join time and rather uninteresting personality. But she never really had any negative aspects so I can understand how she could be your favorite.

I'm figuring that Tharja is going to get a lot of votes in both the most and least popular categories.

  17. Ok, so I stole the idea from here and it originally came from here, but I decided to continue the tradition of favorite Awakening characters polls. If someone else was going to make this topic eventually I apologize, but I'll at least be keeping the rules from the Favorite First Gen Males topic for continuity purposes. So yeah, no spotpass characters here.

You can base it on character development, supports, appearance, pretty much anything. Biases are fine. You don't have to post unless you want to, but hopefully this will generate some good discussion like the last couple topics.

There's one more rule, you can't vote for either Maribelle or Cordelia as your favorite or else.

I considered adding Libra to this poll as a joke option, but didn't because I figured it would skew the results, but if enough people want me to I suppose I can do that.

First post: Voted for Miriel as my favorite because her nerdiness is endearing and quite hilarious at times. Not to mention she allowed the game to subtly add a few science references that shed some light on the role of technology in FE (and gave me a good laugh to boot).

Least favorite was Maribelle (don't worry, Cordelia is close), because I made the mistake of marrying her to Chrom on my first playthrough and I was disgusted by how obnoxious she was (not to mention she is a terrible mother for Lucina both gameplaywise and support wise).

  18. ...I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought like this. I loathe him and, even with his sympathetic backstory and wish for atoning... well, I'm a little like Chrom and just can't, because I feel like he went entirely too far, while on screen. It's implied that Walhart and Aversa did as bad (or perhaps worse from certain points of view), but that was never seen, only heard.

If the poll had included the spotpass males, Gangrel definitely would've been my least favorite vote. It doesn't help that I feel like his "recruitment" has the least sense in it [...Okay, Emm's might be more, but she shows actual mental damage, so I sorta let it slide...], considering how my line of thinking is "hooray, we've slain the Mad King. Now, let's make sure that he's dead, because he could be faking to kill me again later." ...Admittedly, I've been noted as pragmatic and cynical, so maybe that was just me?

No, you definitely aren't the only one, and I'd hardly call being a bit cynical a bad thing. I get that the spotpass characters aren't "canon" and their deaths and rebirths aren't practical at all, but I'd agree that it is a bit hard to suspend your disbelief when Chrom forgives Gangrel for killing Emm. As for Walhart, while he shared Gangrel's "ends justify the means" philosophy, Walhart's ends were undoubtedly not only more noble but also more practical than Gangrel's. I mean, Walhart's plan would have killed both the gods, and suddenly not only is there no more Grima problems, but the entire world would no longer be subject to the whims of the gods. Sounds like a win to me.

    </Gushing about Walhart>

well, I guess I did like his gimmick more than I should have, but when I saw his first few lines, I sighed and immediately thought we had another volke on our hands, and when I did see his weakness for candy, it was a rather nice surprise.

That is understandable. I probably would have felt the same if I Gaius had struck me as overly similar to Volke.

Is anyone planning on putting up a first gen female equivalent of this poll anytime soon?

    I got you covered: http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=42065&st=
