  1. I'm not saying the story wasn't there or good, but at least half the time you just walk to a new map and start fighting immediately without a single word being said. If there were to be a remake, they'd probably change that to make it more in line with every other entry in the series. The topic's about things that would change in a remake, and I can't see them leaving it like that, for better of for worse.
  2. Honestly, a Gaiden remake would have to do so many things to make it playable by today's standards that it wouldn't be Gaiden by the end. The story is barebones to nonexistent most of the time, and the characters are barely people, so you'd have to make up a ton of dialogue just to make up for that. As was mentioned earlier, it is pretty short, so a remake would probably stick in more maps and ease up on the difficulty curve, for better or worse. IMO, Gaiden is fun and has a lot of charm, if you like janky old NES games, but that's really its biggest selling point, and a remake probably wouldn't do much more than drain that out of it.
  3. Benny is my favourite character in the game by a pretty wide margin, so he wins for the dudes. Everything about him is perfect. For the girls, Selena wins out, but not by nearly as wide a margin as Benny did. Ophelia and Mitama are pretty great too, but I find the kids a lot harder to care about in Fates. I like playing as Femui more because she doesn't look awful and can marry dudes. Lastly, Conquest wins out for having a dramatically better cast of characters, actual difficulty, and fewer gimmick maps.
  4. Here’s chapter 2, featuring my third fighting unit: [spoiler=Chapter 2] Marth and co. are on the move already Chapter 2 and we’re already fighting promoted enemies. Conveniently, they’re promoted enemies that I can hit for effective damage. The crew. I’m glad they give you a preparations menu right away, instead of making you wait ages like in the GBA games Suddenly Catria. She joins up before the start of turn one and is apparently one of the best units in the entire game, so she’s getting benched immediately. I move my squad over to the left while the enemy begins to charge me. Fortunately, the enemy wyvern knights spread out to the forts instead of attacking. One of the houses has actual useful information instead of just complaining about being oppressed. Warren get Here’s his stats. Pretty much all around better than Ryan, plus he’s got one more move and can actually pass through terrain. I like him. Warren’s first action as a member of my army is to do an about face and shoot his former squadmate in the face Here’s the situation at this point. I’ve only got one unit who can attack at 1-range, but the forest should be enough to slow them down to a reasonable pace. Also, that thief’s trying to run off with a Lady Sword and, uh, spoilers, but there’s no way to reasonably catch up with him with just Marth and two bow guys. I pull out Marth’s Rapier to take on the Cavs and he kind of brutalizes them. Also, he’s got a unique attack animation with the Rapier, which I thought was pretty neat The cavs throw themselves upon Marth’s blade, and he picks up levels 8 and 9. Favouritism makes a unit stupidly good in a game with no diminishing exp gains. Ryan picks up a chip level… Then I do some trade shenanigans to let Warren finish him off with the Steel Bow Things are much more manageable now …Kind of I clicked too fast and accidentally had them attack separate targets instead of focusing down one guy because I’m great at this game All according to keikaku Warren gets his first level of the playthrough; Strength is always nice Time for some dragon-baiting I have no idea how you’d do this if you weren’t letting yourself use archers for whatever reason. These guys are such tanks that even after a round of combat with my super-Marth, I still need to break out the Steel Bow to take them out Apparently the boss moves. This caught me completely off guard, and I was really lucky that my archers were barely out of range. He’s got bonkers defence and a Knight Killer, I’m sure this guy caused a lot of salty kids back in his day Ryan and Warren have to team up to take him down, and Warren gets another level that might as well just be Strength. Time to bait the last dragon I wanted to feed the kill to Ryan, but I forgot that he sucks And with that, we’re done Inside the castle, we find yet another unit that won’t ever see the light of day Also she gives me this thing; I guess it’s important or something And… that’s Chapter 2 done. Thanks for reading, stay tuned for Chapter 3.
  5. It’s been almost two years since I almost-but-not-quite finished a screenshot LP of FE3 Book 1, and I’m back, this time for Book 2. If you’ve been waiting for the exciting conclusion to Book 1 (which, I’m sure you haven’t, since it was ages ago) then just picture Marth getting anticlimactically warped over to Medeus and poking him with the Falchion, and then get ready for a new, fun filled adventure, featuring new faces and conspicuously lacking in certain others. Anyway, to make things more exciting, I’ve decided my first run should be a challenge run of sorts, so here are my rules: 1) I’m not gonna look anything up. I’ve never played Book 2 and only played the first half-ish of 12 years ago, so it’s mostly blind, excluding the fact that I have ambient knowledge of what goes on just from learning them second hand over the years, like how I need the star orb things and how you recruit the Bishop girls in the final chapter 2) Since playing through Binding Blade with only crappy units was so much more fun than playing regularly, I’m going to do the same here. Since I couldn’t find an actual tier-list, I’m going to use the characters who are ranked as worst of their class on the unit ratings on the SF page for Mystery of the Emblem, aka over here: http://serenesforest.net/mystery-of-the-emblem/characters/character-ratings/ This means I’ll be using: Marth, Midia, Ryan, Sheema, Yumina, Est, Warren, Elleran, Ricardo, Samson, Feena, Bantu, and Chainey. I’m also going to allow myself to use the 4 units who can recruit the girls in the final chapter, aka Sirius, Merric, Minerva, and Julian, since I want to go for full recruitment and also I don’t really want to solo the first half of the game with just Marth and two bowmen. 3) Malliesia is legal until I get Yumina Anyway, without further ado: [spoiler=Chapter 1] Here goes nothing The game starts out with a little scrolly intro, but it’s hard to cap and really long. Essentially, the war from Book 1 is finally over and Hardin is Emperor of the World now. More preamble. The war is over, Jeigan is too old to fight, and Sheeda and Marth got married. Also, I had to use the old translation patch, since for some reason the new one absolutely refused to work for me this time around. So, sorry for the outdated names. I love that Hardin just sends Marth a letter. “Dear Marth, please go kill some bad guys, love Hardin, XOXOXO” The chapter starts off with this guy bossing Marth and his army of nobodies around. He’s just your average friendly old man, nothing to see here Anyway, here are the only two units I have that I’m allowed to use. Marth is pretty decent, since I’m pretty sure caps are all 20, but Ryan looks 12 years old and has the stats to match. I start off by trading Marth a sword that I don’t mind using up and then get to work on the first enemy. It’s a pretty standard bandit chapter, since plotwise the rebel army is already all but eliminated. More trading, since Gaggles won’t ever be seeing the light of day The enemies pile up on top of me, but Marth has Lord magnetism and Ryan is completely helpless, so they conveniently don’t even bother trying to attack the guys I’m not using Mopping up a few more bandits A whole bunch of thieves spawn from this cave, which is kind of weird, since there’s only one village and it’s across the map so it’s in no danger. I think they just want to feed you a bunch of free exp Marth gets the first level of the playthrough, and he doesn’t disappoint I have him down a vulnerary and head to the village, since Marth is the only one who can visit in this game Malliessia get. I’ll be using her for like, two chapters Ryan gets his first level, and it’s the same as Marth’s. Maybe there’s hope for him yet? I pick up an extra iron bow, since I don’t want Ryan to run out. Marth can keep snagging swords off my cavs, so I didn’t bother buying anything else. These guys don’t attack, they just kind of wander back and forth aimlessly I wanted him to chip for Ryan, but Marth doubles and kills them Levels. They’re noticeably worse than the last ones. When you get too close, Lawrence and Ogma pop up Lawrence tells Ogma to take the kids to safety, Yumina refuses to go and then… Lawrence just accepts that? She’s a 13 year old girl, Ogma could have just carried her away to safety without breaking a sweat and a lot of trouble could have been avoided. I’ve got Marth holding this fort, but Ryan can’t cross mountains, so it looks like the rest of the map is a Marth solo. Marth hits levels 6 and 7 fighting off the orgy of bandits. At this rate, Marth is gonna hit 20 before I even get any star shards. Marth can Talk to Lawrence to end the chapter without having to fight him The reason you don’t have to fight is because Lawrence spontaneously explodes, somehow. This isn’t explained in the slightest. Marth seizes, and then the kids show up. They’re not too happy about the whole explosion business. Marth tries to save the children, but Lang is a dick, so he refuses and sends Marth off to Minerva’s country, Macedonia, where she’s allegedly being held captive. And… that’s it for Chapter 1! Hopefully things are more exciting and less infodumpy as things progress.
  6. I'm like, half a year late to reply to this, but here goes: Cavs: Percival wins this pretty easily. I don't actually care for any of the others, except somehow I always find myself using Treck, so I guess he's my second favourite. Archers: Dorothy and Igrene are both pretty close. I think Igrene might inch out just a bit further because she's so pretty. Nomads: Sue's the only one I like at all, so this one's pretty easy. Shin bores me and Dayan is kinda terrible. Knights: Barth is great. He's a crazy good tank unless he's up against mages, and 6 doesn't really throw that many mages at you since it's too busy swarming you with Wyverns. Switch him to Axes upon promotion and give him Armads and watch him tank Manaketes all endgame long. Shamans: I'm Sophia trash. She's so bad that I can't help but love her. Mages: Lugh's my favourite, but Lilina's white dress is really pretty. I never got why her artwork and mugshot are wearing red while her sprite is blue and white. Stickpeople: Saul's the clear winner for me, since Elen's 50% Mag growth somehow means that she never procs it for me, and I just can't like Clarine for some reason. Plus, using a troubador over a priest means you miss out on having an Aureola user. Thieves: Wyrmslayer Cath comes to endgame every time Swordmaters: Fir. Rutger's another character I can't make myself like and Karel comes way too late and I'm still a little resentful that he was better in all ways compared to Fir after I'd spent the entire game babying her Axe bros: I like Lot. He's cute. I want to like Garrett too, but he's kinda bad. Mercs: Dieck, no question. The other two wish they could be that strong. Wyverns: I honestly don't really like either of them. Zeiss probably wins out by a bit if I have to choose. I just wish one of them had a non-blue wyvern, it would have shot their coolness factor way up. Pegs: Tate. There's something about Thany that I just can't like, and Juno is borderline unusable. I'm also still a little mad that my dreams of Durandal Juno were quashed. Refreshers: Elphin's bird is the best. Merlinus?: He's borderline useless as a deployable unit and only exists in the plot to be yelled at by Roy for being a jerk who doesn't want t help literally everyone. Fae?: She's cute and I like to feed her a few levels so she can contribute to endgame, but it sucks that you can't legitimately use her that much since her dragonstone has so few uses. Roy?: This is what I think about Roy:
  7. I miss a bunch of classes that would be totally redundant, like Bishops and Pirates. Druids were pretty great, too.
  8. For Rider, I'd suggest going for one of the more esoteric mounts, like Kinshi or Falco, or maybe even Mechanist. Their whole thing is being able to ride anything (except dragons, I think), whereas around half of the other classes have some degree of proficiency with riding, so horses don't really show off their skill. I'd say they should probably get a Skill or Res boon, since they're typically not the best with actually fighting and use their mounts as gimmicks. Avenger should probably be a weaker class with both the counters and like, an unforged bronze weapon. The other Avengers don't really have anything in common with each other because it's kind of a gimmicky non-class, so you might as well base it off the first one.
  9. I'm at 161:36, which is 3rd place, behind Awakening (which is just shy of 300 hours) and Rune Factory 4. Times played is 39 (20th), and average playtime is 4:09 (7th).
  10. Hyato's position as the most disliked character makes me pretty sad. I can only assume that people just went "LOL it's Ricken 2.0" and then never used him, because honestly, he's a great unit if you know how to use him right (aka, swap him over to Chieftan and he's Birthright's best tank with 1-2 range), and his supports are actually pretty decent. He's way better than Ricken, that's for sure.
  11. Just got this when Lewyn killed Reptor in Chapter 5. I'm not really sure what could have caused it, though, since I'm sure tons of people have gotten past Reptor without bringing this up. Also, should there be an ellipsis/dash after the first That's instead of a period? It looks wrong.
  12. It's because the Kana that shows up on the map is a completely different unit from the Kana you recruit at the end. If you talk to a kid and they turn blue during the map, then they'll have skills from the start. If they don't join until after the map's over, their skills are rolled when the map's over.
  13. Honestly, I always pick Johalvier just because I like his animations a lot more. If I'm not going to actually use either of them, I might as well at least get the satisfaction of watching one of them waddle across the arena a few times a chapter.
  14. Tellius in general has my favourite cast of all of them, so it's kind of hard to narrow them down. So, in mostly no particular order: Ladies: Laura: I'm a sucker for down-to-earth tries-their-best healer types, and that pretty much describes Laura to a T. Also, there's something about how... normal she looks that really draws me to her, too. Heather: What's not to love about a spunky lesbian character? Nothing, that's what. She's great, and I always end up inexplicably having her be the MVP of the GM chapters. I've brought her to endgame multiple times just because I like her as a character so much. Astrid: She was such an amazing character in PoR and then RD just... ruined her. I'm still a little mad. Calill: I'm gonna be honest, I don't even know why I like Calill so much. She's my favourite mage in Tellius, though. It's a shame she's stuck with knives in PoR. Vika: I love crows, I love the Laguz Emancipation Army, and I love the little bit of personality that you get to see in the single scene focused on her. I just wish the game'd let me actually use her. Honourable mentions go to Meg and Lyre, because they're awful and I love using them Dudes Muarim: Muarim is my favourite character in the entire series, bar none. Everything about him is perfect.I really love how selfless he is, plus, uh... he's easy on the eyes, to put it lightly. Leonardo: Leo's another character I really like but don't really have a reason for. I like his colour scheme a lot, and he's a nice guy all around. Ranulf: He kind of seems like the kind of guy I'd want to hang around with, if he were an actual person. He's a nice guy and a good friend to Ike. Also RanulfxIke OTP Rhys: He's the dude version of the down-to-earth tries-their-best healer type. I like that he's always looking out for everybody despite being sickly. Also, in my last playthrough of RD he got the most kills out of everyone in the end, which is bonkers. Soren: I honestly like him mostly for his dynamic with Ike, but I've got a wind magic bias, too. Plus his scenes with Aimee are fantastic. Honourable mentions to Aran and Naesala
  15. Across all three routes, the only blow-everyone-away best unit I really had was Hayato in Birthright. He had something like 34 def as an Oni Chieftain after Horse Spirit and could handle entire maps on his own.
  16. Off the top of my head, Xander x Nyx and Odin x Kagero. I don't mind having a bad Siegbert because I never really use him anyway (though, Xander doesn't really want Nyx's pair up bonuses), but Ophelia really wants a magic mom and she's too awesome not to use.
  17. I always assumed there were some people left over in Valla afterwards, like Anthony, or whatever his name was. Like, he was part of Anankos' army, but he also seemed to have an actual free will, unlike the resurrected people you fight. Plus, it's only been about twenty years since Anankos ousted the former royalty, so there could have been pockets of survivors left somewhere.
  18. Corrin(m) vs Corrin(f) (avatar) - F. M Corrin is borderline impossible to make not look like a doofus, and also F Corrin means I can marry dudes. Kana(m) vs Kana(f) (avatar child): M. I... kind of really hate F Kana's awful bun thing. Felicia vs Jakob vs Flora (maid/butler): Probably Felicia? I honestly don't care for any of them that much. Flora is the clear loser, imo, since she's... really boring. Silas vs Sophie vs Xander vs Gunter vs Seigbert vs Peri (cavalier/great knight): Another set where I really don't care for the whole group, which is bad since it's the largest one. Probably wither Xander or Peri. Hinoka vs Shigure vs Caeldori vs Subaki vs Reina (pegasus/kinshii): Shigure wins by a fair margin, but Hinoka's really grown on me. She's pretty terrible as a peg, though. Takumi vs Kiragi vs Setsuna (archer): Takumi's great, but I've got a real soft spot for Kiragi. Niles vs Nina vs Shura (outlaw): Niles solely for being the token gay option. I like Shura quite a bit too, but mostly just because he's a really good utility unit. Forrest vs Elise vs Dwyer (troubadour): It's me, the one guy who really likes Dwyer. Something about him is really appealing to me, and honestly I have no idea what it is. Sakura vs Mitama vs Azama (cleric): Mitama is probably my favourite Birthright-side character. She's hilarious and also a pretty great unit. Saizo vs Kagero vs Kaze vs Asugi (ninja): I change whether Saizo or Kagero is my favourite like, every time I think about them. Saizo probably wins out, but also sometimes he explodes. Midori vs Mozu vs Yukimura vs Azura (etc group): Midori. I really liked Yukimura before the game came out and I only knew their vague descriptions and appearances, but it turns out he's really boring. Fuga vs Ryoma vs Hinata vs Hana vs Hisame (swordmasters): Here's another group I don't really care about. I married Hinata in my first playthrough of Birthright and I kind of regretted it, but I guess I like Hisame, probably? Rhajat vs Hayato vs Orochi vs Izana (mages): Hayato grew on me so much more than I ever could have imagined. Plus, his little "...Goodbye" crit quote gets me every time. Odin vs Nyx vs Ophelia (dark mages): Ophelia is in my top 3 faves in the game, so she wins this one handily. Arthur vs Charlotte vs Rinkah (axe users): I really like Rinkah, even if she has some rough patches combat-wise sometimes. I think I'll probably like Charlotte once I actually manage to pull off a playthrough where I use her, but she's pretty awkward to get going. Percy vs Beruka vs Camilla vs Scarlet (wyverns): Beruka, even if she's kind of suboptimal as a unit most of the time. Oboro vs Shiro (lancers): Shiro. I never got the Oboro hype. Effie vs Benny vs Ignatius (knights): Benny is my favourite character in the game and my second favourite character in the series, after Muarim. I rolled f!Corrin in Rev just so I could marry him. Soliel vs Lazlow vs Selena (mercenaries): Selena. Severa was one of my faves in Awakening, and Selena is still way up there in Fates. Plus, she's a stupid good Dread Fighter. Kaden vs Selkie vs Veloruia vs Keaton (shifters): Wolf!Shigure Keaton. He's a cutie and his class is absolutely fantastic, both combat-wise and aesthetically. Marth vs Ike vs Lucina vs Robin vs Anna (amiibo/dlc): The only amiibo I have is Ike's, and his "We meet again" makes "We've got trouble" sound like it should win awards for best voice acting. I guess I'll say Anna, since she's kind of a real character sort of.
  19. I'd say Chackram is the one that bothers me the most, but that's mostly because a) it was just randomly renamed into something not even tangentially related to what it was in the JP version, and b) it sounds way too boring to be an S rank. The Nohr S ranks kept their cool names and the Hoshido ones got crappy and uninspired English ones.
  20. 8 at least has moments, like Phantom Ship and the desert chapter. Rev mostly just has that one part when the Nohr Retainers join up with Xander and Leo and you've got to keep them alive and you weren't allowed to save since the chapter before.
  21. I agree that Revelation is probably the easiest hard mode-having game in the series. It mostly just feels like they decided that they'd make up for not having difficulty by throwing as many gimmicks at you as possible. I'd probably stick Birthright Lunatic just above Awakening Hard, but that might be because I barely used Ryoma and have played through Awakening so many times I could do it in my sleep. As for Conquest, it might be because I played it first, but I'd say its Hard is significantly more difficult than Birthright Lunatic, and probably harder than 6H or 7HHM, since it still possesses difficulty near the end of the game, whereas in the gba games, even if you limit yourself to garbage units, you can still one-man army the majority of the game once they gain a few levels. But also, I'm a scrub and haven't done most of the "hard" games/difficulties, so, my ranking for what I've done is probably: Awakening L>Conquest H>BB H>7HHM>SD 3*>RD N>SS H>PoR H>Birthright L>Revelation L>Mystery Book 1>Genealogy I'm not gonna rank Gaiden because the only time I played it I broke it in half with Angel Ring grinding, but also it doesn't look like it would be that hard if you know what you're doing.
  22. I had a lot of fun with Great Master Shiro in my first Birthright run. It's actually a really good class, it's just really hard to put onto anyone who'd appreciate it, since it's dudes only and there are a grand total of 4 guys in Birthright who start with a lance rank, all of whom need to marry for it. Also, no reclass makes me as happy as Wolfssegner Shigure. He's absolutely perfect.
  23. I like switching to Oni Savage after level 5; with Horse Spirit he gets really, really tanky. Like, tanked half of Birthright's endgame tanky. Rajhat can do it too if she has a good mother, but her Skill's pretty iffy sometimes.
  24. No, but there's an enemy in the Vanguard dlc that drops an Aether scroll.
  25. Yeah, funnily enough, if you change someone with a stone rank into a Mechanist and then click their face to see the little weapon demonstration, you'll actually have a rank in Saws, despite the class not being able to use them.
