I've identified what's going on with the more recent influx of spambots and am presently deploying a fix, which means that for the next hour or two you may see some weirdness. Registrations are also being disabled temporarily while it deploys, so I can make sure I have a clean baseline to monitor. I'll update this thread when everything's cool again. But, yeah, it was pretty extreme a few days ago. I wonder why it's even happening, like...is it seriously making someone any money to be spewing out all this stuff by the novel full in a language the people of the site don't use? If it's anything like I think it is, it's just a way to seek attention. Unfortunately for a forum site like this, we kinda have to give it attention to get it cleaned up, which just sucks. My working assumption is that it's for SEO. It doesn't matter that we can't read it; it only matters that Baidu's algorithms can. And running spam bots is cheap enough that it's probably worth taking a chance on them, since they probably just have to move their site up just a single position in Baidu or Google's search result for them to make back their money and then some.
