Final Fantasy 2 is the only one that comes to mind (due to counterattacks not existing yet). They either don't take much (FF4, maybe other FF games) or they use nasty counterattacks in that case. Was there even a FF where you could attack them safely anyway with magic...? Doubtful. Well, from what I saw, IV they counter all but summons, V counter is the only thing they ever do, except cast Meteor when low on HP, VI they counter summons, II, III, VII, VIII, and X don't counter at all.
