Johnathan Crane is also known as Scarecrow, who I'm sure you're familiar with. In this case, he's a bit like the Batman Begins version, a concieted corrupt man, only he's not so psychotic or uses fear drugs. I kinda only made up the outrageous sum of gold, because he was frustrated at everyone else then. He personally couldn't care less about the money. It's basically an excuse to follow them, and to keep him in the group. It's turned to "His light magic is necessary" so that's why he's coming with now.
