  1. 1. Which one - group thread or individual threads?

    • 1 Birthday Topic for everyone!
      8
    • Individual B-day Topics for each person!
      6

So, there's this jolly good fellow on another Fire Emblem forum I frequent (mostly dead) who has the following problem:

I've been posting on another message board lately, and I ended up having a rather heated discussion about birthday topics. I made a Happy Birthday topic for a member of the board, and I was then informed that there was a topic called "Happy Birthday" in which all birthday wishes for everyone should be placed in.

What do you think? Assuming birthday topics should exist, should there be individual threads for each birthday, or one thread where all birthday wishes are grouped? I am in favor of the former.

Each option has pros and cons.

One thread means less topics for the same purpose, which is a little convinient for some of us.

But it also means that many pages will be filled and maybe members will get lost.

Having too many topics for the same purpose is a bit odd, but helps in avoiding people getting lost when greeting the right person.

I choose the first one, but you guys know there is an easier way right?

Just go to the bottom of the forums page, look whose birthday is and if you want to greet him/her then leave the post in that person's profile.

As easy as that.

Does anyone here watch The Office? Remember the episode where Micheal wants to go out into the wilderness like a survivor-man and Jim is left in control of the office? Well there were multiple birthdays coming up and Jim had the genius idea of putting them all together as 1 birthday celebration instead of a different party for each person. It turned out to be a disaster. No one was happy.

Even better. Instead of a topic for each person, there can be a topic for all birthdays on a certain day, or all birthdays during a certain week. That would cut down on the number of topics but would still be more personal than one huge birthday topic for everyone.

I have personally found that a thread discussing birthdays is useful for filling the forum with small talk, which is lots of fun. Thus, I don't like this option as much because it discourages cross-talk over birthdays.

But I concede your suggestion is a valid third alternative that could have been included in this poll.

At FEW we usually have one topic for everyone during one day, at least from what I can remember. I like the idea about weekly birthday topics, although it would require mental fortitude to keep track of bdays during a certain week. (most forums only display daily bdays)

A subforum perhaps? Shouldnt this be moved to site content or something like that?

I'm simply asking people's opinions on the subject generally, not trying to change SF's policies on this matter. Moreover, I'm doing it in part because I feel it is a laughing matter. Here's what I said on the other forum:

Hmm. I personally think that having separate topics allows for each birthday to get its own rightful due in attention and praise. A birthday topic would encourage people to overlook certain birthdays on occasion, and also make it difficult because birthdays would be meshed and mixed up like some kind of messy batter so you could no longer distinguish between the individual parts. What I mean by that is that there would be this horrible state where the following would occur:

Let A=initial birthday post for person #1

B=initial birthday post for person #2

C=follow-up birthday post for person #1

D=follow-up birthday post for person #2

ACCBDDCDCDDDCC

Do you see what I'm getting at? It would be further complicated by E and F, thank you post from birthday person #1 and thank you post for birthday person #2.

What happened to leaving messages on people's profiles saying "happy birthday". That seems like it would do the job adequately. But as long as it is in FftF, I don't really care how many birthday topics get made (up to a point that is much greater than 1).

If Michael Scott says that it was a terrible idea, then...... ;)

Yeah I was thinking containing everybody's on a certain day too, but...

Think we should just stick with profile. But this doesn't help as much if someone wanted it to be more public.
