CT075
The order of operations exists. It's 288.

Xander
I got 2. One of us is doing something wrong.
Nanami Touko
I got 2 as well. I think you're supposed to multiply the 2 by the 12 in the brackets before dividing it into the 48.

CT075
It's actually 48 (divided by) 2 * (9+3) not 48 (divided by) (2*(9+3)) Order of operations is complex.
Nanami Touko
asdfasdfasdfasdfasdf WOW, I feel stupid now. I haven't mathed in forever Dx This is quite embarrassing.
Claude C Kenny
you do the operation in parenthesis first, then 48 divided by 2, then the number in parenthesis is treated as a multiplier. so it should be: 48/2(9+3) 48/2(12) 24(12) which is treated as 24 x 12 = 288 simple math. at least that's how I was taught to do it. Dr. Tarrasque
1st - Parenthesis 2nd - Exponent 3rd - Multiplication 3rd - Division 4th - Addition 4th - Subtraction For same precedence cases it is done from left to right.
CT075
Way to repeat what I just said Yeah, it works out to 24*12, not 48/24.

Multiplication and Division are on the same level, while Addition and Subtraction are on the same level. There is no difference between adding -2 and subtracting 2. eclipse
Multiplication/division work like addition/subtraction - same priority, so go right to left.

There is no difference between adding -2 and subtracting 2. Edit: Clarification Isn't that why I labeled both Multiplication and Division with "3rd" while Addition and Subtraction were labeled "4th" as if to say their level of precedence is the same? Multiplication/division work like addition/subtraction - same priority, so go right to left. Left to right. Paperblade
Isn't that why I labeled both Multiplication and Division with "3rd" while Addition and Subtraction were labeled "4th"? Wow I can't read. I'm too used to idiots who don't know basic order of operations spreading this Multiplication > Division > Addition > Subtraction shit Edited April 12, 2011 by Paperblade
Dr. Tarrasque
Wow I can't read. I'm too used to idiots who don't know basic order of operations spreading this Multiplication > Division > Addition > Subtraction shit Understandable. Oh snap, throughout my entire elementary school life, I've always been taught that division comes before multiplication... For things like this we're usually given words to remember the order of things. In this case, it's "PEMDAS". The only thing that remains after that is to recall that M&D are equal in precedence level with the same being true for A&S.

Paperblade
Redoing the math with P>E>M>D>A>S it also becomes apparent this topic is a troll targeted at those sort of people. ;/ Good thing I was never taught PEMDAS
WeaponsofMassConstruction
For this sort of complicated mathematicals, use Wolfram Alpha.
Anouleth
I was always taught that division took priority over multiplication. Of course, all this could be solved easily with use of brackets, or by formatting it as a fraction that makes it clear whether you multiply first or divide first. Kriemhild
Multiplication/division work like addition/subtraction - same priority, so go right to left. Really? I thought most programming languages uses left to right. Understandable. For things like this we're usually given words to remember the order of things. In this case, it's "PEMDAS". The only thing that remains after that is to recall that M&D are equal in precedence level with the same being true for A&S. I learned it as BoDMAS (B for Brackets) but yeah, it's the same thing if multiplication and division are the same. I guess all that really matters HERE is whether it goes from left to right or right to left. For this sort of complicated mathematicals, use Wolfram Alpha. We already know that the answer is 288, and Wolfram Alpha agrees with that. Edited April 12, 2011 by Kiku-Ichimonji
