Magic is the best way to defeat them! Depending on the color of the sprite they are susceptible to only certain types of magic or physical attacks. At least from my experience on the SNES FF series (FF3/6 is the only one I've beaten but with abuse of original bugs, I downloaded a fixed version that I will replay sometime soon.)
