Well, even separately, that's pretty painful to do... but first game woes. Ah yes, it is quite painful to play...though the big bosses are great visuals. The soundtrack, though...that's the best! I really love it, so I wouldn't call it a bad game per se, but it's a bit archaic and not designed very well (even for its time, when you had other totally playable and good things like the original Gradius and the original R-Type). Getting powered up takes ages, dying makes you lose any power-up progress, and sometimes stuff is just unpredictable. That kind of thing. I just accidentally tilted my MAME and the game reset. That's probably my cue to stop playing it. EDIT: And I just noticed that I was in Zone P, one stage away from Zone Z... Yup. If you go up a tier, you'll stay on that tier even if you die, which is a godsend. But surviving long enough to get to the last tier of each power up...that's the trick. And yeah, shield is really difficult to get to the third tier. I usually die before I can. You can get a considerable amount of power in the first stage, it's true. My main strategy is to just stay in the middle-ish of the screen and shoot frantically, so maybe that would help.
