Lancelot was added 100s of years after the first versions of Arthur came about. Gawain was one of the earliest knights. Lancelot was some later guys OC that went to be the best knight because idr if the guy was welsh or french The French added Lancelot. He was basically added to the story to be its Mary Sue.
